Great to see everyone get involved and try all the activities we offer - target shooting at Lee, fishing and smooching the fish! snorkelling and a special visit to Kororareka otherwise known as Russell, a town steeped in history of our country. A visit to Pompallier Mission House and to Flagstaff hill where a praying mantis came to visit and had the group mesmorised! Episode 27 Atlantic Crossing Pt 5 We’re nearly there...21 days later! In this weeks episode it’s all about fishing, and getting excited for the final stretch to St Lucia. We catch two beautiful Wahoo and many Mahi Mahi to feast on. The fresh produce has nearly come to an end so it’s all about getting creative in the kitchen with what we have left. We had been tracking a squall travelling at 60kts on the radar and decided to reef the main right down asap, conditions deteriorated very quickly and being head to wind and swell in the middle of the Atlantic is not ideal. In the middle of it all, somehow our extra sheet that we use to pull the genoa out to the mid ships went in the water and inevitably wrapped around out port propeller. We left it like that for a few days until the weather was good enough to get in the water and free it. Of course with 3 deep sea divers onboard there was a lot of discussion about who should get in the water but try as we did, we just couldn't get either of the girls in there! No Atlantic crossing is complete without some sort of an issue with a toilet but unfortunately it was our toilet that blocked so lucky me got to unblock it. This is not a very nice job alongside in a marina, never mind at sea in a swell but I think it was impossible at this point to dampen our spirits.... St Lucia was on the horizon after an incredible, life changing 21 day journey. Crossing the North Sea between Marstrand (Sweden) and Orkney (Scotland): Check! Ryan and I had no offshore sailing experience. Now, I do! Last week, I crossed the North Sea with Andy and Mia from 59 North Sailing on Isbjörn... and without Ryan :) Andy and Mia offer crew space on their boat, Isbjörn, a beautiful Swan 48. A couple of months ago, they happened to have an open bunk between Marstrand and Orkney, and I took the opportunity to get some offshore sailing experience before our own adventure. Btw, check them out!!!: https://www.59-north.com/ We all met in Marstrand, on the West Coast of Sweden. On the first day, I woke up way too early, and had to sneak out to the galley to get myself a snack while everyone onboard was asleep. I was even too early for the shower! We then set sail in waves that made Ben really seasick. I made a little fun of Ben while he was passed out in the cockpit, and paid the price. Just a moment later, I was myself agonizing all the way to Denmark, where we ended up that day. We waited out some weather, hit the reset button and set sails to Orkney on day 3. I used some seasickness patches and made sure I was well prepared for all conditions. Fortunately, the rest of the passage went much easier, but the 3 first days were exhausting. We spent them alternating between being on watch and sleeping, and I got to see some of the prettiest sunrises and sunsets of my life. I took my first night-watch ever, from 00.00AM to 4AM. We rocked 8 knots all the way in the dark. I was a bit scared at first, but being so prepared, geared up and in good company made me relaxed and enjoy the experience. After 3 days at sea, we took a dip in a 9 degrees cold North Sea. Bucket list check! That same day, we saw dolphins. The winds shifted to the aft of the boat on the next day, and I walked up the bow to go rig a boom preventer in the waves. I got back to the cockpit a little wet :) At 2.30 AM that night, I got woken up by the sound of the engine, and we landfall in Orkney at 4AM. We sail "the slot' to the remote Arnavon Islands turtle sanctuary and watch the little baby turtles race to the sea! https://www.sailingnandji.com In this episode of Sailing Nandji, we make a short passage crossing of 50nm across "the slot" between New Georgie island and Isabel islands. Navigate our way through an outer reef in the middle of nowhere and end up in a confused ocean where wind against current causes some tall standing waves. With the strong wind, we sail downwind in the lagoon and find shelter in the stunning Arnavon Island turtle sanctuary. We explore this sheltered lagoon and enjoy the pristine beaches and sea life. Caught out on our excursion around the lagoon, a storm rolls in and it is a race to get back to Nandji to close the hatches and save the technology! We then get to witness the hatching of the endangered Hawksbill turtle and assist in getting the little guys to the ocean. Watching them clamber there way down the sand and get rolled around in the breaking waves swimming off into the unknown. These animals really do have a brutal beginning to life and it is not the strong that survive, more the extremely lucky ones!! We met in the summer 2015, we were introduced to each other by the virtual world. Eighteen months later we were getting married on a beautiful beach on Barbados, bare foot, very simple ceremony just like a dream! Two days after the wedding laying on the beach, talking about sailing, Carla suggested... why don't we sail around the world? Guess what Simon said? "Let's do it" He took it with no second thoughts! And here we are, fifteen months after that day in Barbados, we started our adventure in Croatia. We made it happen working through all the challenges on the way. Now we are enjoying this wonderful life, and what a wonderful life it is! As we travel we will cross less fortunate countries, we would love to help to build a school or a health care centre, anything that these people may need, and in our beautiful world this is taken for granted. But for these people it's a dream, or may not even be a dream. We will look around and when the opportunity to help comes we will put our hands and hearts in to it.

Here’s another Trawler Tip video. Jeff Merrill learns how Christopher Bruce changes out the intake strainer basket on his Kadey Krogen 44AE. This is a simple step by step procedure that takes just a few minutes to perform and helps insure that your sea water intake cooling water flow is unobstructed. In this video, Christopher is changing the main engine cooling water strainer basket. With a fresh strainer basket ready, a small container to hold the old strainer once pulled, you don’t need any tools - just some paper towels to soak up the seawater and a fresh water rinse once you have confirmed the installation is correct.
