Souvenirs d'un road-trip magique en Afrique du Sud entre amis. Arrivés à Johannesburg depuis Mayotte, nous avons loué un van pour aller au parc Kruger et admirer les animaux en liberté. Puis direction Durban sur la côte Est pour plonger avec les requins. Nous avons longé la côte jusqu'au Cap de Bonne Espérance en faisant des étapes quotidiennes de plusieurs centaines de km. A Cape Town pour 3 jours, découverte de la ville, de son Water Front, de Table Mountain et descente en trottinette tout-terrain, rencontre de la colonie de manchot du cap à Simon's Town, rando au Cap de Bonne Espérance. This week we remove the butterfly hatch to expose the framework and request that the boatyard do some finish fiberglass work on the edge. A week or so ago, we noticed a drip down below and it was coming from the lower side of the forward beam that supports the large hatch. I removed the hatch and believe that a preventative measure will be to have the fiberglass round up the larger lip that houses the hatch. We removed this hatch and refinished it a few years ago before we had removed the teak decks. I wanted to go do some tall ship sailing but it wasn't the right season. I also wanted to check out a civil war fort, but that also wasn't open yet. I did, however, decide to go see the USS Constitution. This is the oldest commissioned Navy boat there is. She goes by the nickname of "Old IronSides," a name taken on in her first battle when the opposition commented that the cannonballs bounced off her thick wooden hull like it was made of iron. I also get a great story from the GrandSquid on the drive over to the boat. She has some imagination telling me all about a killer spider with a broken heart that ate half her body and that is how she turned into a mermaid. :) We also use the little-known method for getting tools out of the bilge. It is the Dip your Granddaughter by her ankles method. It is pretty fun and she enjoyed it as well. It is raining and a great opportunity to check for leaks and use the new trick from the book. The napkin trick is where you use a napkin to track a waterleak by placing it around where you think there is a leak, when there is a leak it will show on the napkin as it gets damaged in the surface when it get wet. When it is dry again the damage in the paper is still there and you can then see where the leak is.

No engine? No problem ... but a few moments of arrested breathing as we sail off the anchor at Miami Beach and proceed down the winding waterway into Biscayne Bay. This includes transiting three narrow bridge passes. All doable with patience and planning, but no place for carefree sailing.

We sail for the Berry Islands and find a comforting place to anchor in preparation for the stormy weather to come. But when we venture forth in Tooth to explore the surrounding islands, we are disappointed to find that all of the ones nearby are privately owned by cruise lines! We do get to see some rays on our journey and the water is beautiful. The next day, we travel further out to an island that is completely empty and explore! We find a great many conch and collect them on the beach. The BIG day is here. We set off for the longest sail we'll probably every do! We leave Costa Rica and sail out in the Pacific Ocean with the course set on Hilo, Big Island, Hawaii. 4100 Nm and 30 days out on the big blue! We are a Swedish couple who wanted a different kind of life. So we moved aboard our sailboat RAN, a custom built Beason 40 in aluminium, untied the lines in the middle of the Swedish winter and started to sail south along the coast of Europe. So we're enjoying our morning rituals and working away editing videos, when over the radio comes a cry for help for a boat that has run aground on the reef! The message is hard to distinguish at first, and then other cruisers start coming on to relay the information... sounds like a boat has somehow went straight up on the reef in Grenada between Hog Island Anchorage and Secret Harbour where we are anchored.. the request goes out for any dinghies that can render immediate assistance, especially larger ones, so this is one time we know our Yamaha 60hp will come in very helpful! I tell Shascha to grab the dinghy tow line, which is the longest line we have that is also 3-strand so has lots of flex in it, I grab the keys and untie the dinghy and off we go! It doesn't take long to see the sailboat that has run aground, and it is right in the middle of the reef which is going to make it very difficult to reach without putting our own dinghy at risk... so the challenges begin and with all the other cruisers coming out to assist, we manage to put a good end to a day for one very distraught sailor... Thanks to all the sailors that came out to help that day, and especially to Roger from a neighbouring boat who hopped in our dinghy on our way to render assistance with lines... very much appreciated Roger! Safe sailing. Boat: White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built. The camera gear: Main camera is a Panasonic Hc-v700. Most shots are done with an external mic (Shenggu sg 108) with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Action stuff and small blogging is done with a Sony Hdr-as30v. Underwater video Gopro3plus. Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff! There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access. Content: I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘blar bar mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining. Comments and being at sea: I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. While Im out on the Ocean I have completely no communications with the outside World.
