Off the coast of Central America, we find a juvenile Hawksbill Sea Turtle, badly tangled in plastic debris. When we jump in, we are amazed at the amount of sea life this floating debris has attracted (hundreds of small fish, a large school of dorado and a pod of dolphins!), and the potential impact plastic can have in our oceans becomes VERY clear! Plastics are not only a danger to sea life that can become entangled in it - many animals also inadvertently consume plastic as food! “I’ll bet seeing that from the air while making a landing on the runway wouldn’t be a very comforting sight,” Phillip mused as we motored our way over to it. The dock master at Spanish Cay had given us some very good advice insisting we dive the sunken airplane on the other side of the island before leaving Spanish Cay. “It’s just a few hundred feet out from where the runway ends,” he said. Can you imagine being a pilot coming in and seeing the guy who came before you sunken in the water? While that’s probably not how this plane got under the water (our guess is it was sunk as a fish and tourist attraction), I don’t think that would make me pucker any less seeing that sight from the air while coming in for a landing. But, I’ll bet you would prefer to see it from under the sea. So did we! Take a trip with us folks, and dive a sunken airplane at Spanish Cay! It’s an octopus’s garden in the sea! Originally this Able 32/Whistler 32 had wheel steering and inboard engine. The previous owner converted to tiller steering and added an open-faced outboard well with 15-hp Honda. To improve the performance and seaworthiness of it we changed to a lighter Tohatsu 9.8, moved the motor aft 4 inches, and enclosed it within a locker.

There are two parts to this silly story you gotta know: 1) Our darling wife/partner Kitty had been gone a few weeks on vacation, and 2) there is tiny red submarine that lives in Portovenere. Each time we anchored offshore, there it came, cute as could be, back and forth, day and night, buzzing us while we'd toast the happy people onboard with raised glasses of prosecco from our sundeck. Always looked like great fun, but we'd never gotten around to it. With the three of us and the three kittens, plus the whole sailing thing, there were always other things to do.... Well, Cristina is a die-hard romantic, so to surprise her little lovecat on her return, she hooked up something very special....a private ride with Roberto and his glass-bottomed Nemo Sub! It was amazing... He came round just before the sun went down and took us to grottos and caves, all around the beautiful bay under that spectacular falling sun, all with a bottle of prosecco in hand! If you are near Cinque Terre (Portovenere specifically), find him! He speaks fluent English, knows everything, and is a real gentleman to boot. More of Season 2 of The Boat Life Episode 5. We have been having engine issues since the start of our trip. After many calls to mechanics and talking with fellow boaters we are trying one last thing. We are flushing the diesel motors heat exchanger. a simple process, but it takes all day. The descaler has to sit over night in the system before flushing it out. Melissa Auman and Nic Morganti decided to take advantage of the down time and explore the town of Venice, FL. We went to the jetty, checked out the fishing pier, and even found sharks teeth on the beach. Then We got caught in the rain. No big deal just a little liquid sunshine. Till we got back to the boat. Rain in the boat is never a good thing. It is all part of our adventure traveling to the islands. Our trip to the Bahamas is underway. We have set sail for the Exuma Islands.We are excited this trip has been almost 2 years in the making. If you don't count the first 20 years of dreaming about it. It is really happening. It is an exciting time for us as new liveaboards. SV Dodi our Island Packet IP27 sailboat is filled to the deck with provisions so lets get this trip of a lifetime started. What an adventure!
