After what seems forever (3 weeks I guess), of upwind nasty sailing we make it to Africa! We have to get the boat hauled out in Tunisia (because Tunisia means cheap labour). We are going to get it's bottom sanded back to the gel coat and repainted but Jaz blows up our inverter to add to our list! We have all kinds of upgrades happening for our big trip back to New Zealand. We are the Robbins family sailing on our boat named Nikau. We are a family of 5. Our 3 kids are doing NZ correspondence school on board. They are growing to love it! What's not to love about 3 hours of school a day and then a different playground for the afternoon every day! We've traveled from New Zealand to Sardinia in Italy to pick up our boat and we plan over a few seasons to sail her back to New Zealand. We hope you enjoy following us on our adventures! In this episode, we get a bit seasick! It's gotta happen to every sailor, right? Ah well, the crossing nonetheless went well. No mishaps, just a bit of waves which threw our stomachs off balance. We crossed from Sardinia to Menorca, a distance of about 200 nautical miles which took us about 50 hours. The first day was relatively calm and we had full sails up. Over night, the wind and waves picked up, until we were sailing with only a very reefed in jib –– and still making 4 - 5 knots! Crazy. After two nights in Kitoi Bay, Alaska, we set sail towards Seward. We have an absolutely perfect night sail along the Kenai fjords with sun almost the whole night. In Seward we watch sea otters playing in the harbor and meet one of our patrons. We are a Swedish couple who wanted a different kind of life. So we moved aboard our sailboat RAN, a custom built Beason 40 in aluminium, untied the lines in the middle of the Swedish winter and started to sail south along the coast of Europe. There is no set route and we will go where the wind and our minds take us. s/v Cloudy Bay's (Hallberg-Rassy 54) sailing trip continues, and in this video we are sailing Cloudy Bay from Martha's Vineyard to the island of Nantucket. In Nantucket we had 4 days of bright sunshine and calm weather. We anchored sv Cloudy Bay in the busy Nantucket Harbour along side many super-yachts from the south, while we toured this picturesque island from one end to the other on our GoCycles. Just like Martha's Vineyard, Nantucket has many lovely beaches backed by sand dunes and endless pretty houses, each shingle-clad with perfectly manicured gardens, many down to the ocean front. We were particularly impressed by Sankaty road and Siasconset. On the last day in Nantucket town, we visited the very informative Nantucket Whaling Museum where we learned a lot about where the 17-1800s wealth came from in this part of the world. Whaling ships left from here for multiple year voyages that took them in the south Pacific. Clearly whaling was the lucrative oil-industry of its day. Safe sailing. Boat: White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built. The camera gear: Main camera is a Panasonic Hc-v700. Most shots are done with an external mic (Shenggu sg 108) with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Action stuff and small blogging is done with a Sony Hdr-as30v. Underwater video Gopro3plus. Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff! There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access. Content: I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘bland and mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining. Comments and being at sea: I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. While Im out on the Ocean I have completely no communications with the outside World. Sailing in Croatia is expensive and because of harbour fee and mooring fee even at anchor we left as soon as we could. Also to have work done on the boat was expensive and not the place to be. Although Croatia is a super pretty country with friendly people, amazing coastline, great food, and easy going it still is a strong candidate for top of the list most expensive place to sail. We love Croatia, but after a month there we could not afford to stay there anymore. It was expensive also last time we sailed there in 2016 but now it was even worse. Cheapest is north around Pula. The more south you sail the more boats and higher cost. This is HMS Queen Elizabeth in Portsmouth, England. It can carry up to 60 aircraft. She's NOT named after the current Queen but the first Queen Elizabeth, a renowned World War I super-dreadnought, which in turn was named after Queen Elizabeth I. The new Queen Elizabeth will carry her namesake's honours, as well as her Tudor rose-adorned crest and motto.
