In dieser Phase unser Segelboot Restaurierung entfernen wir das Teak Deck. Im ersten Teil bin ich alleine am Boot und hebel fleißig das Teakholz, mit Hilfe von Profiwerkzeug, von unserem Schiffsdeck. Die Teakleisten wurden auf unserem Stahlboot verklebt und somit muss ich jede einzelne Leiste erst mit dem Multitool lockern, dann mit einem Schraubenzieher aufhebeln und dann mit der Hand abziehen. Zum Glück geht das leichter als gedacht und innerhalb von 4 Tagen ist das Segelboot so gut wie Teakdeck frei. Natürlich kommt auch wieder viel Rost und die ein oder ander kleine Überraschung zum Vorschein, aber es hält sich alles im Rahmen und entspricht unseren Erwartungen. Im zweiten Teil kümmern wir uns dann um die Reste des Deckbelages und entfernen alle Fenster aus der Reinke. If your a bigger person, like me, you probably worry about getting back on your kayak if you fall off. With this technique, you can boost your confidence and be more comfortable on the water. This is not a "sure thing" technique, it's just what works for me. But, it should at least give you somewhere to start! Actually doing it was the scary part for me. Now, I have much greater confidence on the water! I know that what I do on the ground and what I do on the yak look like two different things. They aren't really that different. By practicing what I did on the ground, I was able to do what I did on the yak! Remember, CENTER of balance is the most important part! Keep your head over the center of the hull and all will be fine. If you didn't make it to the end,.. Well,... Let's just say you missed the best part... LOLOL

On Friday 14th September we headed to Manly Sailing Club where Turn the Tide on Plastic, Volvo Ocean Race sailor Bianca Cook was leading a beach clean up with Sustainable Coastlines. In just 15 minutes a huge pile of rubbish was collected from the beach, a true example of just how much junk is out there if you take a closer look. We found this little plastic classic tucked away in Bradwell, Marina, Essex, complete with her owner, former old rock n roll photographer Bill Orchard and his 14 year old cat Misty. There wasn't a lot of wind out in the river but drifting by the famous radio station, Caroline, took us all back to those wild days of the 1960's. We arrived in Half Moon Bay and stayed for three nights. Sea life, dinner out, i capsized my skiff, however i didn't get this on video, (perhaps next time) and we start our generator for the first time.

Von IJmuiden geht es weiter Richtung Süden. Unseren Plan, auf der Nordsee (und nicht durchs Landesinnere) bis Breskens zu fahren, haben wir jedoch gleich am ersten Tag verworfen. Da die Marina Scheveningen geschlossen war ging es direkt weiter bis nach Hellevoetsluis, auf den Haringvliet. Und da wir nun schon wieder binnen unterwegs waren, entschieden wir den weiteren Weg auf der Staande Mast Route zurückzulegen. Und dies hat sich definitiv gelohnt. In Breskens standen wieder einige Refit Arbeiten an: ein neues Getriebe wurde eingebaut, die neue Heckankerwinsch montiert, der Ruderlagengeber für unseren elektrischen Autopilot wurde installiert. Weit sind wir seit März, dem Beginn unserer Reise, noch nicht gekommen, wie wir mit Erschrecken auf einem unserer Spaziergänge durch Breskens feststellen mussten. Aber wir lassen uns durch die ganzen Missgeschicke, die uns bis dato aufgehalten haben, nicht unterkriegen und werden dies auch nicht bereuen! Vielleicht soll es so sein, dass wir grad am Anfang unserer Reise auf die Probe gestellt werden? This week we lose tools. No, Seriously we lose tools. In a span of 3 days, I lost 5 tools. How does that even happen? We did start to prepare the boat for starting. After 9 months of sitting in the yard, it was time to start the engines again. It has been a long time, they started right up when we brought her down here, and we were curious to see how she would run when we started her. But before we did that, it was critical that we check the impellers and make sure she is going to get good water flow. We also installed the hardware on the refinished wooden boom and cut the stainless steel bar that is used as a backing plate for the mainsheet traveler. With all the hard work done we finally set sail and head South down the Turkish coastline, only to be faced with an ever increasing vibration when motoring on the engine. With the wind behind us and a following sea, we reach the lovely town of Akyarlar in no time, but we are becoming more and more concerned with this vibration the more we use the engine. After an overnight stay in Akyarlar and a further one in Knidos we reach Bozburun and immediately employ the services of a local marine mechanic to check out our Yanmar 3YM30 engine. It’s not long before the diagnosis is a bent propeller shaft, and ultimately a more serious issue that only becomes apparent once the shaft is replaced.
