Sorry for our recent paucity in YouTube activity - you'll understand why now (and hopefully forgive us). The day we have spent six months preparing for is finally upon us... Across the Atlantic Ocean we go. The crew convenes in Gran Canaria to begin celebrations and preparations for the ARC Rally. There will be four of us on the crossing - our Patrons have known who for a long time, and here it finally is now for everyone to see. This was a monster of a busy week for us. Provisioning, safety checks, man overboard drills, seminars, weather routing, chart plotting, and drinking free champagne took up every second of every day up until the very day. Race day itself was bursting with atmosphere. It felt as if we were going into battle with so many boats up ahead of us on the start line (yeah, we were late). It was a beautiful sight to see such an array of sailboats skating across our bow as we headed into the thick of the fleet. The klaxon sounded and Avalon sailed to her carefully chosen course. All of our past experience with getting propane have been more trouble than it's worth. While waiting for our tank to be filled we continued our search for new spark plugs for our dinghy outboard. These are something we have been looking for and have had no luck finding for the past 2 months! After several hours of walking countless miles and visiting many stores, we finally found a gas station that had the right spark plugs! We bought the last 3 that they had, picked up our propane, and spent the rest of the day celebrating Randall's birthday. The following morning we filled up at the fuel dock and made our way out of the Marsh Harbour Bay and had a fantastic time sailing over to Great Guana Cay of the Abacos. We anchored on the Southwest side of the Island just outside of the marina entrance and were able to get a spectacular view of the Island by flying the drone. We couldn't believe how many new homes were being built along the beach and were very impressed by the beauty of the area. While anchored at Great Guana Cay we noticed that the wind and tide started to oppose each other which makes our boat do nasty things. In these kinds of situations we have learned to set a stern anchor along with the bow anchor to help keep our butt end downwind. We are so blessed to be here in The Bahamas, living out one of Randall's lifetime dreams. He has worked so hard to get to where we are now, to be doing what we are doing, and I couldn't be more excited for him and all that he has accomplished. We have created some pretty amazing memories together on this trip and I am so happy that we get to share our story with our friends and family members through our videos. For this passage, I had the help of a good friend with A LOT of experience who wanted to bring his new girlfriend onboard. I had thoroughly prepared our 100 nautical miles passage to our winter spot, and my only concern was how I was going to manage interpersonal relations onboard. My friend was older than me, had so much more experience than me as a sailor, and I had no idea who his girlfriend was. And I did end up having to deal with some crew problems. The navigation itself went really well, and we enjoyed a beautiful sail along Costa del Sol in Andalusia. But a few hours after we left the dock in Estepona, the girlfriend asked to be dropped off the boat, which I wasn’t expecting at all. That was the beginning of a less fun time onboard for all of us, which I talk about in this video. By respect for my friend and his girlfriend, I excluded their names and any clip showing them. Although I do have footage of the actual disagreement, I chose not to include them, as the purpose of this video isn’t to show drama, but rather to share the lessons I learned from this experience. My friend and I are good, and this was definitely not the last time that I skipper Polar Seal. National titles and the opportunity to represent Australia at the upcoming Youth World Championships in Poland will be on the line from tomorrow, as the Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania gets set to play host to the 2019 Australian Youth Championships presented by the Australian Maritime College. The 2019 Australian Youth Championships presented by the Australian Maritime College kicked off in Hobart (10 - 14 January), with some challenging conditions delivering some spectacular results. The event is doubling as the National Championship for the classes and the final selection event for Australia’s best young sailors to represent Australia at the 2019 World Youth Championships in Gdynia, Poland. www.sailingyouth.org.au

Sailing to San Blas, Panama We entered the island archipelago from the east and stayed for four days - but if you have the time it's worth staying longer. For safe navigation in this region, as well as all the usual tools and techniques, it is best to use the Panama Naval Navigation Book called: The Panama Cruising Guide by Eric Bauhaus. Pay rigorous attention to this book, which we also found useful on the Pacific side of Panama. These islands reminded us of our stay on the Pearl Islands Plan your approach carefully, with particular attention to your draught. As you approach the shallows it is very useful to have a lookout on the bow, who should ideally be wearing polarised sunglasses. This makes it much easier to see shallow areas or coral heads that may not be marked on the chart. It is also preferable to approach with the sun behind you The docking options on the islands are almost limitless.  We avoided approaching the central island, Nalunega and the nearby islands, where there is also an organised 'entrance' that includes payment to the authorities of the Kuna tribe.  The most important recommendations:  Avoid damaging underwater pipes when anchoring and remember that every coconut, whether on the tree or on the sand or floating in the water belongs to the Kuna tribe. We anchored near the 'swimming pool' and chose to anchor near the island inhabited by two small families and an island with only a small strip of sand around it.  We swam ashore and walking around it really  'connected' us to the eternal peace of the islands. However, when we returned to the boat we noticed a nine-foot-long crocodile that was slowly swimming near the reef where we had just been snorkelling!!! It seemed frightening, but later on a visit to the inhabited island (safely in the dinghy), we were told that "small crocodiles are old friends, and have never harmed us" The Barbecue Island is a beach where yachtsmen gather for an evening on the beach. everyone brings food and drinks for a shared meal and a chance to compare stories and experiences.
