We leave the tranquil anchorage in the Bay of Prony and make our way back to the island, Ile Ouen. We head ashore and check out the beautiful beach with its abundance of natural wonders and spot small schools of blue bone fish swimming in the shallow, coral filled waters. Magnus collects and husks a few coconuts, including a young embryo one which we both try for the first time. A little game of beach cricket, because we can, and we then head back to Nutshell to process the coconuts into desiccated coconut and coconut milk. It’s then a short sail back to Noumea to get ready to check out and head back to Australia, but not before we try a beer at the local restaurant. Upsi, my sailboat is sitting aground on a sandbank in a river. But no worries, I did this on purpose...to clean my hull. My sailboat has one speciality: TWIN KEELS. This enables me to dryfall with my boat in tidal water bodies to inspect my hull, to clean it and to do some repairs without having to spend a lot of money for a haul out. Once Karl's butt was nice and clean again, Maria and I took off on a coastal sail some 20nm down south to Jaramijo. On the way there, we traweld for micro plastic and found 13 plastic items, 8 of them being micro plastic, during a trawl of half an hour. We wanted to see how much trash we would find if we "trawled" on the beach in a straight line for the same amount of time. We only picked up what was in the reach of our arms and collected 248 items in half an hour. At 3 in the morning whilst at sea a vessel charges at us... Pirates? What do you do? https://www.sailingnandji.com/ In this episode of Sailing Nandji, we are faced with every sailors worst nightmare. We are under sail on passage miles off the coast when a vessel charges straight at us. We gybe, change course and the vessel does the same thing and continually charges straight at us... What do you do? Pirates? We have been sailing in Indonesian waters for the past 5 months and have now over the last 2 years sailed all the way through the Indonesian islands from East to West. We have not feared pirate attack, but should we have? At the end of the last episode https://youtu.be/ecqjs5fN-a0 whilst happily sailing at 4 knots a boat charges at us and puts us under their spot light. What do we do? Lets discuss this situation and we would love to hear what you would do if in the same situation... With no sailing experience, we bought a yacht, got it blue water cruising ready and set off sailing to the Pacific! We have since cruised through New Caledonia, Vanuatu, the Solomon islands, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia and then onto the boat yard in Malaysia to prepare for the years to come. With a new engine, we continued onto Thailand, then back down into Indonesia and specifically West Sumatra where we are living the island life and chasing the surf. With our Sailing plans changing, we are returning to Thailand in the coming months and then taking the northern route of the Indian Ocean to the Andaman islands and onto Sri Lanka before heading south to Chagos and across the Indian Ocean once cyclone season has finished and the trades begin again! The adventure is just beginning! We departed the east coast of Australia in July 2017 and have since sailed over 10000nm. We have explored some amazing countries and met some beautiful people along the way. We have experienced so many different and diverse cultures, dived pristine reefs, surfed solo in the middle of nowhere, spent weeks at sea, dealt with storms, big waves, strong winds and had the time of our lives doing it! Safe sailing. Boat: White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built. The camera gear: Main camera is a Panasonic Hc- V770 with a Rode External mic. My old camera is now my number 2 is a Panasonic Hc-v700. Most shots are done with an external mic (Shenggu sg 108) with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Action stuff and small blogging is done with a Sony Hdr-as30v. Underwater video Gopro3plus. Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff! There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access. Content: I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘bland and mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining. Comments and being at sea: I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. While Im out on the Ocean I have completely no communications with the outside World. A Supposed LEISURE SAIL becomes a JAMMED MAINSAIL FURLER! How To Get The Boat BACK TO THE DOCK! Well we've been working very hard to get Cecilia ready for world travel come December, so we decided we needed a little leisure sailing time. Out we go on a beautiful day with 15-20 knots of wind...only to have the mainsail mysterioulsly jam half way out of the in-mast furler! Even the leisure has to be work sometimes! So we worked and worked for almost 2 hours to get the thing unjammed, only to improvise a way to get the boat back to the dock. The next morning up the mast goes Eric to sort out the issue. Enjoy!! Gleich acht Freunde hatten sich angekündigt, ein paar Tage oder Wochen auf der Dilly-Dally zu verbringen. Fünf Wochen teilte ich das Boot mit guten Freunden aus der alten Heimat. Dem Hamburger Stammtisch, einem Honeymoon-Pärchen und Maike und Kai-Uwe Eilts von der schönen Insel Norderney, die wahrscheinlich in 16 Tagen mehr auf dem Boot gearbeitet haben, als ich in der zwölf letzten Monaten. This week on Kawai we sail in to Vathy on Ithaca where we shelter from the forecasted storms and strong winds. The forecast of storms is correct and we are hit with 50-60 knots for 25-30 minutes. During the mayhem Kawai is struck during the storm by another boat who had anchored too close. Fortunately we have fenders out and there is no damage to Kawai. We leave Ithaca and sail towards Zakynthos. The sailing is hit and miss during the trip as we put the sails up and down constantly. The 40 nm trip is extremely picturesque. The west coast of Zakynthos has striking cliffs, large cave and green hilltops. During the sail Jase also catches a couple of tuna. We reach Shipwreck beach at lunchtime and the bay is spectacular. The water is a perfect blue and amazing swimming conditions. We spend a couple of hours on Kawai, swimming, diving and taking in the scenery. We eventually take the tender ashore and are the last remaining people on the beach. Unfortunately the swell picks up so we leave Ship wreck beach at 8pm and head for Keri in southern Zakynthos. We anchor at midnight and wake to a beautiful calm anchorage. Building a cruising sailboat This week, I give you a tour of the outside of the boat to try to give you a better idea of what she looks like. I talk through a few aspects of the design and then we get to work. The sliding hatch is sealed with a coat of thinned epoxy, I make Tufnol sliders and fit them and then the 1st coat of thinned Epifanes varnish is applied before the cast acrylic lenses arrive and I lay them loosely in place. I also get some sanding and varnishing done on the saloon interior woodwork. The boat is constructed of exterior quality plywood, sealed with epooxy and sheathed in glass fibre and epoxy. One of the great beauties of these boats is that the ballast keel is fitted towards the end of the build, enabling the boat to be kept lower in the shed for most of the construction time.
