Episode 139: We are in the MIDDLE of NOWHERE! We took a much needed soul rejuvenating trip to our friends farm up in Skaap Vlei. If you're wondering where that is.. don't worry.. we didn't know either until we go there (it's in the middle of nowhere) As you drive up the west coast of South Africa just past Lutzville you'll find a farm. This is where we spent the weekend and we enjoyed it so much we stayed an extra day. Complete isolation from technology.. meaning no cell phones (you couldn't even charge it) no television and being completely off grid. Made us reflect on what we really wanted out of life & that our decision to go sailing which can be very daunting at times because this is the time in our lives we're "supposed" to make a living and settle down has been the right choice and we couldn't be happier. We picked up the outboard off of our old Dinghy a couple of months ago. This 9.9 hp 4 stroker Mercury has been sitting for at least 4 years. It has been neglected but was in decent shape when it was put up on storage. Sadly storage in this case was nothing more than sitting in the dry storage area of our marina. It was susceptible to sun exposure and many leaves from the trees behind it. I would love to hear your comments, approvals, corrections or observations from your experiences. This kind of community discussion is really helpful for others as well. In this 2 part video series we are going to take a look at the most common items likely affecting this motors ability to start or run. We will start with the fuel system as it is likely gummed up from sitting and not being stored properly. (no gas treatment, didn't drain the carbs and likely had ethanol based fuel in the tank and lines). Video #1 (this one) is all about replacing all the fuel lines both from the tank to the motor, as well as inside the motor housing. This is important as the ethanol exposure to fuel lines can break down the lining inside them and leave a gummy residue. We also check for spark to make sure we validate that our issue is truly fuel focused. Video #2 (https://youtu.be/x1-9FlVXjWQ) is the second half of this video and shows a complete removal, disassembly, cleaning and reassembly of the Carburetor. This is a slightly longer video but has every step you will need to know, with video close-ups to help even the novice (like myself) to repeat this process on their own motor. In this chapter, we finally slip the lines and go sailing! That is, just after we install a BIG 245watt Panasonic solar panel and 370ah AGM batteries to store all the reNEWable power. The mainsail is pretty small compared to the jib so it is easy to remove by only one person. The inmast furling system is identical on most Bavaria boats and I give a explanation about how the system works, some stuff is nice to know when you furl in and out, a lot of people has problems with the sail is jamming inside the mast or in the top. My mainsail is the version without batterns but you can also get many other versions with batterns, something which can get stuck pretty bad. The best is to remove the sail in almost no wind.

In case you don't know me, my name is Lowell Sheppard and this is something I've done more than once. For the first of this series, I'll share some important principles I believe in and abide by when embarking a new challenge. These are practical strategies to inspire and awaken dormant dreams with a belief that every phase of life should be celebrated. Many abandon their dreams and ambitions far too quickly. I maintain that we can recapture them, invest in our future, and live a far richer, more productive and satisfying life. These tips are for all ages, but those over 50-years-old will find them particularly relevant. In this episode, I'll address different kind of dreams and the power of perseverance.

As long as you go slow, exhale and are aware of your surroundings (look up and around for boats!) things should go smoothly. However, it's very important to understand all of the safety skills just in case things don't go according to plan. After sailing 6 days non stop we arrived at Cartegena, Spain and recovered for 9 days ready for a lift out at the dry dock to do repairs and paint. Up to date damage to the hull and various other places. Very bad Corona virus situation here.

Well, here we are. Quarantined and in lockdown in the Bahamas on our sailboat. It doesn't feel too different for us, as we have found ourselves a small secluded anchorage with an uninhabited island as our closest neighbor, and our friends on @wildlyintrepid by our side. The days go by, and we try to make the most of it - as anyone else in the world during covid I would imagine. Covid cruising might be different than covid households, but the challenges of balance and restrictions are definitely in place. Homestead Crater is one of the most unique SCUBA diving destinations in the world, and with it's 96 degree water, it's also the HOTTEST dive in the lower 48 states! It's located in Midway, Utah - far away from where most people would assume such a spectacular dive site would be. The crater is a calcite mineral dome - formed much like the geothermal structures of Yellowstone National Park. Basically water is heated deep underground by lava, which is then forced upwards through channels in the rock. Over time, Homestead Crater was built up in this way from calcite deposits. We very much enjoyed our dive at Homestead Crater, and this one is currently at the very top of our list of favorite dives. (this is untrue. repealing the 1980 mental health act did NOT undo decades or even years of mental health anything. The MHSA wasn't even implemented yet. So the myth grows- before reagan, no homeless, all the mentally deranged were perfectly happy in prisons. After reagan - millions of homeless, all mentally ill.
