As a first time boater, you should probably get your boating license. Boating licenses are basically a safety course you can take in a couple of hours. What scares me in a project like this? Join us as we haul the boat out with a crane, and drive through town with a 23 foot wide sailing catamaran. What stands in the way of sailing this boat around the world?
And then it happens! Departure day arrives and we have a time slot to leave! Our nerves are frayed to the ragged edge, but this is what we came for. We’re committed, and like lemmings we follow the other boats toward the cliff edge. Actually, it’s quite exhilarating. This is what we’ve done for years now, preparing for long passages and then heading out, following an imaginary line toward a waypoint far offshore. We use the skills we’ve honed … motoring out, deploying sails, tacking and jibing back and forth short of the start line, jostling for position, and then nosing in and forcing a space for ourselves among the other boats as we cross the start line. As predicted, the wind convergence zone west of Grand Canaria fills in as we head south, and it isn’t long before we witness another boat broach and shred their spinnaker. But Talisman is in her element. She loves strong winds, and races down the coast toward the Cape Verde Islands. Getting from the Canaries to the Caribbean isn’t usually a straight shot, although many boats attempt to do so. From a weather standpoint, sailing ships and sailboats have historically run south a good distance prior to making the turn west. “Head south till the butter melts” is what the old-time British naval captains advised. This is because of a phenomenon called the “Azores High”, which is a generally stationary high-pressure system that sits in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. As is typical for any high-pressure weather system, the center has little to no wind, and getting stuck in such doldrums can leave a sailing vessel stranded, forcing them to motor and/or wait for a few breaths of wind. Whether we made the right decision by going south remains to be seen. Only time will tell as regards winds and weather patterns. On the fishing front, while sighting a large whale we land a huge Mahi Mahi, which feeds our crew of four for five days. Incredible! Plus, we see pods of dolphins practically every evening. sailing videos, sailing, cruising, monohull, oyster, oyster yachts, sailing blog, sailing vblog, sailing vlog, atlantic crossing, crossing the atlantic, ocean sailing, max fercondini, max fercondini actor, luis oliviera, ARC, atlantic rally for cruisers, ocean crossing
We finally decide to take on the infamous 'Portland Bill' and attempt to get our sailing boat officially into Englands 'West Country'. We've had all kinds of set backs and boat malfunctions but we think we've got it all under control and now all that remains is to find a suitable weather window, before making a dash for it. Following the construction of Icon's remarkable 68 meter explorer yacht "Ragnar" has been a unique and thrilling privilege, and one I am so happy to have been able to share with you. Recently the shipyard invited my team and I to visit the yacht as she was in her final stages of delivery. Lots of work was still going on on board, but we were able to film a unique glimpse of a vessel that is so much more than just another explorer yacht. She is a real ICON!
We tried to leave Panama, but disaster struck. Come join us as we kill time in Panama City and the Las Perlas islands. And eventually repair our boat... POSTING LIVE UPDATES ON SOCIAL: https://www.instagram.com/the_sailing_family/ https://www.facebook.com/the-sailing-family-voyage/ ----------------- ABOUT US: We are a family of five sailing around the world on our "dream boat," a performance catamaran named "Archer." Ten years ago, before kids, we sailed a Lagoon 380 named "Honeymoon" halfway around the world to Sydney, Australia. Along the way we shared our experiences with family and friends via YouTube, and by happenstance created one of the first sailing channels. We also realized what an incredible experience we were having and that someday we wanted to do it again, only this time with our kids. OUR BOAT is a Ferrari red Outremer 51 performance cruising catamaran. We chose this boat as it has been specifically designed for the purpose of bluewater sailing. It was designed and built to withstand the stress of sailing multiple times around the world safely and in comfort. And yes, she's nice on the eyes too. OUR ROUTE has taken us from the Boston/Cape Cod area of the United States down to the Caribbean and then on to the Panama Canal. At the time of posting this we have dealt with the Coronavirus lock down in New Zealand and are now cruising again in Covid Free Fiji. PLEASE COMMENT!: As a "family channel," we are required to actively monitor all comments, but we still want to hear from you. Tell us what you think! THANKS for watching all. The traditional triangle has a new look to help you on your journey toward finding the perfect vessel!
The bush in our brand new prop stripped - with only 18 hours on it! When will this stop?! It feels like everything that can go wrong, is going wrong these days. A few days before leaving Langebaan to move to Saldanha Bay we were testing our engines, Chris picked up that the engine on the starboard side was loosing power as we pushed it to 2000rpm, it could have been 1 of three things: 1. A plastic bag or something else was wrapped around the prop 2. There was something wrong with the engines gear box 3. The bushes in the prop were slipping. 🤦🏼♀️😖 After checking for a plastic bag and ruling that out, Colben scratched a line across the cone and the propeller, Chris pushed the revs up again, Colben got back into the water to see if the lines had moved, they had. This meant that the bushes inside the props were slipping when the revs were pushed up too high. Definitely a better outcome than had it been a gearbox issue. We got brand-new props when we bought Saoirse. She initially had feathering props on and we got a set of fix props in the sale but we decided to go for the solid props instead and keep the feathering props as back up. We’ve done about 18 hours on the engines and in this time it seems it has worn the bush down inside the prop. We have been told that sometimes the props just come that way, highly unusual but it seems the universe felt we needed to be tested again. Because the props we bought over five years ago by the yachts previous owner, we didn’t have any guarantee or warranty on them to go back on. Chris Boock took that propeller back to Cape Town to have one of his guys look at what was wrong with it. We were happy to find out that they confirmed the bush theory, this was a less costly fix if compared to having to buy a new prop of comparable quality or have it be a gearbox issue. An engineering firm in Muizenberg replaced the bush and we were able to put the propeller back on. We then started sea trials! After getting the prop back we went out to sea for the first time! We were super excited to finally take Saoirse out! We had Chris and Tony Boock with us for Saoirse’s first trip out of the lagoon into the open ocean. We had a challenging 3m+ swell coming through when Chris decided we needed to do a man-over-board drill, it was quite successful for our first attempt at this on Saoirse and it was awesome knowing that Saoirse had seen open ocean for the first time in 12 years after he big mishap back in 2008. With the bumpy trip, poor Cleo did not fair well at all. She’s become accustomed to sailing in the lagoon at this stage but the ocean is quite different. She spent a good few hours laying as flat as possible across the saloon seat or snuggled in Denver’s arms dry retching🤮 but happily, as always, as soon as we got into calm waters again, she quickly felt herself again.

In this episode we explore Tarbet and the surrounding area, find a local shellfish supplier and prepare a pan of fresh mussels in chilli and white wine sauce. We set sail for Port Bannatyne on the Isle of Bute, and stop of for lunch at a pretty little village called Tighnabruaich on the way. The bikes prove extremely useful for exploring the Isle of Bute, as do the local buses allowing us to visit Rothesay and Ettrick Bay. Each island visited has its own beauty and we have found the locals to be extremely welcoming. We are absolutely loving Scotland. Special Episode: I have moved up the date of my departure onboard SV Wahine for my solo voyage across the North Pacific from Japan to Canada to late spring 2021! Why? Times and circumstances have changed. Given so many changing realities, I have decided to revise my schedule to cross the North Pacific. It is now my intention to depart Tokyo Bay in the late Spring of 2021. In doing so, I will catch the Kuroshio current up the coast of Japan. Then, somewhere off Miyage or Ibaraki, I will turn away from land and sail between latitudes 35-40 to what I call “Nemo North,” which lies at : 37° 58’45.13 “N / 148° 1’12.17 “W This will allow me to catch as much of the prevailing winds as possible before turning north at around 149N, avoiding the Pacific High (the doldrums), and head to Vancouver. This route will take me through the two gyres that form the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, which I want to witness first-hand, sharing what I find. Pacific Solo is a voyage of discovery exploring the garbage patch and finding “Nemo North.” It is also a deeply personal quest that I am doing for my grandson and my mother. Every epic journey needs a vision, an image that captivates and compels. One of those images for me in terms of Pacific Solo is of my mother greeting me when I arrive in English Bay, Vancouver. I want to, must do this while she still remembers my name. You can read more about my decision and its implications on my blog at www.pacificsolo.com Please consider becoming a patron and supporting this project and sharing the message with others. www.patreon.com/pacificsolo. Why not start small? This 1980 launch Compass 28 is the perfect reason to get out on the water with ease this summer. She's probably the best budget yacht under $20k on the market today. Since first launched over 40 years ago, the Compass 28 retains its reputation as a very safe all weather yacht, manageable for either a young family or the solo sailor, and perfect for bringing on your sailing and skippering skills. This yacht has just had her annual anti-foul, and extra love from her owners with a full topside polish. She's fitted with a Yanmar 8ph inboard diesel which has just had a significant annual service with the addition of a new exhaust elbow and a reconditioned water pump. She obligingly starts even in cold weather first go. The previous owners replaced her standing and most running rigging in 2015. They also added a new Jabsco manual toilet and other upgrades included a new boom cover, headsail UV cover, boat awning and tiller cover - all by North Sails. The sail inventory includes a roller furling headsail, two mains, 2 spare headsails and a symmetric spinnaker and pole. She also comes complete with a tiler arm autohelm and cockpit cushions for added comfort when moored or at anchor, and lots of useful equipment, spares and tools. The transom s/s boarding ladder offers easy access from the dinghy or when swimming. The interior is dry and inviting with upgraded cushions with blue upholstery. She sleeps 4 comfortably but with the option to sleep 2 more (total 6) when the saloon table is lowered. There is a contained toilet compartment with wash basin and a decent sized forward (owner's) cabin with deck access. The yacht comes complete with a brand new inflatable dinghy and 2.5 Yamaha outboard motor which complete this amazing little 'ready to go' package. 'Katherine' offers excellent value 'dream come true' package and is an ideal opportunity to gain a great all rounder sailing yacht that you will enjoy for years to come. This yacht would suit either someone new to sailing or a seasoned sailor who appreciates a quality seaworthy vessel that has proven the test of time. To avoid disappointment, contact EziYacht Broker (Sonia Robinson) by email or phone today as this yacht will sail away soon www.eziyacht.com/yachtsforsale. http://www.TheSailingFamily.com - With our inflatable catamaran - our Ducky 19 we sailed to the different Aegadian Islands. The Aegadian Islands are located near western coast of Sicily. We loved Levanzo because there is less tourism around the island and we had a bad weather when leaving Favignana. It was the only rain in 7 weeks! All in all we had a great time testing our new inflatable catamaran - we love it because you have less challenges, less costs and nearly the same possibilities like if you have a big boat. Next year we will sail around Sicily… We hope by sharing this adventure you will find some inspiration in your life. If doesn’t have to be sailing. It can be anything at all. Just take a few minutes every day for yourself, breathe deep and relax, and don’t forget to SMILE big time! TheSailingFamily.com is a documentary film project about a family who bought a sailboat and started sailing in July 2016. The second season has taken place in Panama - the third one was a one year long sailing trip in Colombia, Jamaica, The Turks and Caicos Islands and the Bahamas and now we start again - back to the basic of sailing - a small boat to travel and enjoy the sea. Last but not least we explain what material and devices we use to find suitable weather windows to set sail and plan our long-term goals across the Pacific.

Previously on Sail Mermaid I teamed up with the crew from "In the same boat" to help clean the shore from the plastic crisis in the ocean on the coast of Norway. Check out that video on: https://youtu.be/sEMWO8Yp-N8 In this video I sit down and talk to Rolf, the leader of "In The Same Boat" about how they run their operations, what challenges they are facing cleaning the archipelago of plastic pollution, fundraising and much more. Here is the list of topics we covered: 00:00 Recap of last episode collecting a big net stuck in vegitation 00:27 Sail Mermaid intro 00:45 Introducing Rolf-örjan Högset and the project named "In The Same Boat" 01:38 The Volunteers, where do they come from, the job they do, how they are motivated and rewarded. 04:00 Where does the plastic come from? Is it local pollution or marine debris that traveled with the Gulf Stream? 04:50 80% of the local plastic waste comes from the fishing industry 05:36 The use of the ocean as a big trash can is changing for the better 05:56 More old plastic waste in the sea means we are polluting less now. This can be analyzed by reading date stamps on plastic bottles etc. This gives hope for the future! 06:30 We will have to clean beaches for many years to come 06:44 There is not good enough systems for delivery of plastic waste even if this is required by law. We need better systems to make sure people and industrial users will comply with regulations 07:52 The challenge funding beach cleaning and the fight over money within environmental organizations 09:13 This crew of 12 people collected 20 tons of plastic in 8 days! 09:40 The cost of delivering 20 tons of plastic waste - even for volunteer organizations 11:20 Who should pay to clean our shores? 11:48 Is this a vendetta against the use of plastic products? 12:30 The microplastic from washing our clothes. 13:31 Microplastic vs the plastic we can see. Which affects us the most? 14:05 Why most people don't realize how big this problem is 14:39 How can people sign up to volunteer 15:15 Young Adults Living in tight quarters, friendship, drama and learning to live sustainably 16:40 Adapting and learning to tolerate other cultures and opinions 16:52 How to support "In The Same Boat" financially to help them continue cleaning the archipelago of marine debris and plastic litter 17:19 closing it up... 18:07 Outro This video has no mid-roll ads as I find them terribly annoying. Vlog#20 We finally sail into Ensenada, Mexico still not knowing if they would let us in as we didn't have "correct" paperwork. We had a since we had sailed all night and were woken up saying it was time to go check in at customs. We had the marina help us as we thought wed have a better chance getting in with someone helping us! Paying for help really worked out, he got us in quite easily and we moved into a slip in the marina for a few days and their was weather coming through that we didn't want to go into. Trav was extremely excited as he had talked for years about wanting to see the baja 1000 for years, and it just so happened we accidentally pulled in right when it was on! We needed to replenish our diesel and water, so we ordered water to be delivered and Travis went to go get diesel. It was really far but he decided to walk it anyway so we would appreciate it more because we had had to use it so much all through America. The water guy ended up being late so we missed watching the kickoff of the baja 1000, Trav was extremely disappointed. We then left on to Turtle Bay where we caught a bunch of fish along the way!! -------------------------------- Instagram- @Sailingdecorum --------------------------------- --------------------------------- *WHO ARE WE?* •We are a Canadian couple, Travis and Jessica.
