Nous sommes arrivés à St Eustache en février 2020 après une navigation très mouvementé au départ des BVI. Nous y sommes restés environ 1 semaine ce qui nous a permis de largement découvrir la petite île hollandaise, qui dépend administrativement de St Marteen. L’activité principale c’est la plongée. On y trouve 2 centres de plongée dont le plus important est ScubAqua, dirigé à ce moment-là, par 2 couples : 1 couple suisse et 1 couple hollandais. Le peu d’hôtels sur place accueillent essentiellement des plongeurs. Contrairement aux autres îles aux alentours dont les fonds marins ont été dévastés par le cyclone Irma en 2017, St. Eustache n’a pas souffert du cyclone sous la mer mais uniquement à terre. En effet, les fonds marins de St Eustache sont plus profonds ce qui a permis de garder une faune et une flore intacte. Nous avons effectuée 2 plongées dont 1 de nuit et nous confirmons que St Eustache c’est vraiment un des meilleurs spots de plongée des Antilles. Pour venir à St Eustache, très peu de moyens disponibles. Soit en bateau comme nous, soit par un petit avion bimoteur qui part de St Martin. L’île est habitée par 4000 personnes, dont beaucoup de retraités hollandais. Notre spécialiste des randonnées, Dajana, a effectué 2 randonnées dont celle du point le plus haut de l’île, le volcan « Quill ». Pour pouvoir faire les randonnées il faut acheter un « Pass » qui coûte 10$US et est valable 1 année. D’après Dajana, les randonnées ne sont pas intéressantes ! Avec le Covid, l’île est toujours (en septembre 2020) en « Lockdown » et le couple suisse qui dirigeait le centre de plongée a jeté l’éponge et rentré en Europe après plus de 16 ans d’activité.

During this time of lockdown however, the boarder patrol was on high alert and thus was not to kind to us attempting to check-in. Although not filmed, we were met by 5 armed officers of various governmental agencies. We would say once they met our smiling faces, all became quite friendly and even intrigued by our journey! Getting accustomed to liveaboard life on S/V Gone with the Wind, we spend time like the locals. We acquire new to us stone crab traps. We're given some scuba gear from a local underwater photographer. Jessie drives Putt-Putt solo for the first time ever and does a bit of organizing our dry goods. We are Shawn, Jessie, Mojo and Voodoo. We started our Youtube channel, Big Easy Sailing, to document our journey on our 1972 Gulfstar 36 sailboat. We’ve arrived at idyllic Elbow Cay, a Bahamian island with a little bit of everything: an adorable little town, a handful of surf breaks, showers, a coffee house, one nicely paved road, rum cocktails, and even a game of bingo. Of all these things, surf breaks have been the hardest to find. Finding a surf break is better than striking gold; catching a wave is pure joy. Kirk’s been on the hunt for waves since we left SoCal. The Bahamas aren’t known as a surfing destination, but we heard rumors a few waves could be found, so we embarked on a multi-day mission to find them. If there’s no waves to be found, skating a freshly-paved road with just the right incline is the next best thing. Imagine taking your house into a harsh environment, shaking it around and dousing it with salt water. How much stuff would break? Then move your house hundreds of miles from the nearest hardware store and we find out just what it takes to maintain an offshore sailboat. After 1 week of hard labor the projects are coming along nicely, but there is still an endless list of that needs tackling. An upgraded lithium battery bank installed, refrigeration compressor and cold place replaced, and of course the damn toilet decided to back up in the yard and cause a disgusting mess and I'm forced deep into some really shitty work, LITERALLY!! I sail to Antigua and stay in English Harbor for 10 days. Time is flying by with plenty of things to do. Then I have two nice anchor stops on Green Island and Long Island. On Barbuda I am visiting Cocoa Bay, Low Bay and Codrington before heading back to Antigua, where I stay in Dickenson Bay and Jolly Harbor. Finally, I sail to Nevis, but decide not to clear in due to the experience of a Swedish neighboring boat and sail on to Simpson Bay on Sint Maarten, where this nice cruise is ending. Ahoy YouTube, shortly after we arrived in the boatyard a hurricane came sneaking up the coats. We watched him closely and thought about our options. When he decided to head straight west, out to the vast wilderness of the pacific ocean we felt very happy and continued working on our long project list. But one forecast model said something really strange.. They predicted that Hurricane Sergio would perform a U-Turn and come back to the mexican coast. Back to where we are. Hmm.. we didn't believe that this would happen and kept on working, but I didnt trusted him being no threat any more and a few days later I was proofed wrong and right at the same time. Wrong for not believing he'd do a 180 degree course change and right for not trusting.. So a Category 4 Hurricane was heading towards us. what to do? I went to see the Boatyard Management. Gabriel, the Owner, was unaware. Like most other people he forgot about it the moment he turned west. But after I showed him the tracking he was on it and started with the preparations. We did the same and stripped ZERO to bare poles and clean decks and then waited for Sergio to arrive.. This is a windy episode but enjoy it nevertheless.. Love you all. We are expecting a new little froth baby very soon and this means we have some difficult decisions to make. Being pregnant overseas is difficult enough and then throw a pandemic in the mix and you have a recipe for hurdles and road blocks. We have tried our best to prepare for the future in as many ways as we can and we feel that we have made the right decision for us and our new baby. What are we going to do and where are we going to have our new baby? Watch and find out! With no sailing experience, we bought a yacht, got it blue water cruising ready and set off from Australia sailing to the Pacific! We have since cruised through New Caledonia, Vanuatu, the Solomon islands, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia and then onto the boat yard in Malaysia to prepare for the years to come. With a new engine, we continued onto Thailand, then back down into Indonesia and specifically West Sumatra to live the island life and chase the surf. With our Sailing plans changing, we returned to Thailand to wait for the weather and begin our journey to the northern route of the Indian Ocean to Sri Lanka before heading south across the Indian Ocean once cyclone season has finished and the trade winds begin! We were on our shake down sail when the mooring we were on failed and our home ended up on the reef. We saved the old girl and got her back to the boat yard for repairs to continue on our adventure! Ready to sail across the Indian Ocean, we were only days away from leaving when the pandemic begun closing countries around us... We are stuck for now, but enjoying the slower pace! We departed the east coast of Australia in July 2017 and have since sailed over 10000nm offshore. We have explored some amazing countries and met some beautiful people along the way. We have experienced so many different and diverse cultures, dived pristine reefs, surfed solo in the middle of nowhere, spent weeks at sea, dealt with storms, big waves, strong winds and had the time of our lives doing it! The adventure is just beginning as we sail West with the trades around the World! Keep in mind we bought her at auction without ever meeting the owner! The owner was sailing along and ran aground - hard. Hard enough that the keel pivoted and pushed the aft end up into the hull. This force cracked the internal grid in several places and broke a portion of the grid free from hull. At some point an inspection was done, insurance was called and decisions were made.
