The rules surrounding covid are changing so regularly and are often pretty ambiguous. On top of this, one of the challenges of sailing in the Med during the pandemic is often you're without internet when underway and unaware of the rules changing at your destination. It certainly adds a new dimension to passage planning! In this episode we finally make our way to our winter berth at Marina di Ragusa in Sicily. We didn't realise but Italy had just entered into a new lockdown. On Italy's covid traffic light system Sicily had just been declared an "orange zone". Which means non-essential businesses are closed and population movement is limited to the town you live in... We were still 200 miles from our winter berth and had two stops to get there! Oblivious of the new rules until we were half way to Ragusa, we look desperately for the loopholes in the rules to get us safely to our destination and without an unpleasant encounter with the Italian coast guard. Located In: San Carlos, Mexico Year: 2003 Hull Material: Fiberglass Yachtworld Number: 3715867 Price: US$270,000 From Bluewater Sailing Magazine: “Island Packet 420 • Not long after Bob Johnson and his scrupulous team at Island Packet Yachts introduced the Island Packet 420 in 1999, BWS had the opportunity to sail aboard a brand-new one on a springtime romp from Norfolk, Va., across the Gulf Stream to Bermuda. It was one of those ideal boat-test situations of the sort that this magazine covets—650 miles of serious offshore sailing to a classic destination in the unpredictable North Atlantic aboard a vessel unquestionably designed for and suited to blue-water passagemaking. We weren’t disappointed in the passage or the vessel. In the October 2000 issue we wrote, “There’s nothing like falling off a wave at nine knots in the middle of the night to give you an idea of how well a boat is put together.” What we found was a sturdy boat, solidly built, aboard which nothing broke, groaned, worked, leaked or shifted in conditions likely to coax any of those unwanted visitations out of less robust craft. The 420’s solid-laminate hull is laid up with tri-axial cloth under pressure; the interior furniture sits on a structural interior floor pan, while bulkheads are tabbed to the hull and deck; ballast in the keel is internal and enclosed, sealing the keel and creating what is in effect a second bottom in that area. Particularly impressive is how the chain plates are incorporated into the hull. Located outboard to enable a wide support base for the rig, they are fixed directly to the hull with a belt-and-suspender system of double welds embedded in fiberglass and reinforced with unidirectional glass and bi-axial glass run fanlike well down beyond the turn of the bilge. It’s bulletproof. The design hardly jarred the Island Packet paradigm at the time, but it did represent the latest developmental step in a well-established line. We remarked, “The boat utilizes the Full Foil Keel thinking that Johnson has brought to bear in so many of his past designs. By configuring the long keel as a hydrodynamic foil more refined than a simple slab-sided section, the part is intended to develop lift as speed through the water increases, not unlike a modern-day fin…The net benefit is a hull design boasting less than five feet of draft (4’6” in the shoal option), able to be laid up as a one-piece molding, with an easy and forgiving motion in a seaway.” Our stroll through the numbers uncovered “a boat moderate in all respects,” which is to say safe and forgiving in oceangoing conditions. On paper, the 420 is stiff and stable in a blow (B/D 40%). For a long-range, system-heavy cruiser with a lot of volume and payload-carrying ability, she commands an unexpectedly supple D/L mark of 257, well into the medium range for such a vessel. And in the horsepower department, SA/D at 18 indicates a good spread of canvas for developing speed in moderate air, but not so much as to put the spreaders in the water when the breeze pipes up; as we noted, “Certainly our positive Gulf Stream experience with a full main and staysail in 22 to 30 knots of wind speaks to this.” We summed it all up by observing that “one of the satisfying things about the IP 420—and the rest of the Island Packet line, for that matter—is that the boats are pure cruising craft, not designed to be all things to all people.” The passage to Bermuda featured sustained close-reaching speeds of eight to nine knots in the breezy going just described, with good response at the helm and a solid bearing through the water. The 420, we suggested, “is strong in the straight-on cruising realm of sailing: large tanks, comfortable motion, easy to sail alone or as a couple, durable, forgiving in rough seas, a great galley and a trustworthy design concept.” LOA 44’7” (13.6 m.) This is a Thanksgiving Special for all our friends in the States and for everyone to get some ideas about the best xmas gifts for sailors. We've found loads of gadgets in our time on board that make life easier & more fun. So if you're a sailor or just know a sailor these are all things that anyone with a boat would be happy to find in their stocking! Some details of the items: 1) Bluetooth speaker, we are using one called Enacfire Soundbar, but there are lots available, they are great for listening to radio / podcasts from your phone / computer and also great when watching films off the laptop, much better sound. 2)Solar shower bag.Again loads available, find one with a good shower head, ours broke in a week. But these showers really work and are great for rinsing off after a swim, much better than getting salt water in the cabins. 3)DC charger for your laptop. Search one to fit your laptop, they are all available usually in the section for accessories. Get DC charges for everything you can, obviously phones, but we have them for camera batteries & lots of other things. Won't charge as quick as mains but much more efficient than running the inverter. 4) Cigar lighter torch. This is super useful, I use it every day because I can just grab it. The black on I show in the video I can't find anymore on Amazon so I'm buying a Trorika version because I dropped one of mine in the bilge! Havent tested the Trorika, but it looks good. 5)Comfort Seat. As I said in the film we got these from a friend, but I have now looked up their website which is https://www.comfortseat.nl/cockpit/?lang=en They do a whole range so we are going to get another, slightly longer one for lounging on deck. Lot's of people have asked if they are worth the money, the answer is yes, every penny, or euro, or cent (I think they're available in the US) The old one we had was cheaper, but it was uncomfortable from the start and broke within 6 months. Worst of all though it had a zip that ended up coming uncovered and scratched my teak, it got thrown in the bin straight away after that! The Comfort seat is waterproof, non scratching, strong and super comfortable, it is well named! 6)Mr. Funnel If you are travelling anywhere where you cant trust the fuel 100% (thats basically everywhere!) get one of these. As well as the possibility of dirt in the fuel, more times than not I am left with water in the funnel which otherwise would have been in my tanks. Water in the fuel is the biggest reason for diesel bug and trust me you dont want that. 7)Microfiber towels. Hundreds of varieties in lots of prices all the ones we have had are great so I don't think you need to spend a fortune on them. So, while North America celebrates Thanksgiving, we celebrate the fact that we are alive and well and unharmed after our lightning strike. The downside we can’t say the same for the boat. We have lost our electrics. Which means having to steer the boat ourselves, every step of the journey, rather than rely on our trusty autohelm which is regrettably out of action. In 1997, after a disastrous Olympic rowing campaign, Rob decided to row a seven-metre plywood boat, 2500 miles from Tenerife in the Canary Islands to Barbados in the Caribbean. It took 6 weeks and he and his rowing partner, Phil Stubbs, won the inaugural Atlantic Rowing Race. Skip forward to 2014, we invested in Javelot a 43 ft Fountaine Pajot catamaran. Armed only with Robert's 3 years of racing P class yachts from the age of 11 to 13, and Rachel's non existent sailing knowledge, we set off to learn the ropes of ocean sailing. We broke stuff, replaced stuff and got to know our boat before heading offshore with our three children, Finn 17, Declan 15 and Ivan 12, in tow. Through trial and error, we have become confident wayfarers, kind of. Our plan? To sail around the world, meet the locals and record our adventures. Part of the journey will be retracing Rob’s eldest brother Kerry’s travels at sea. Using Kerry’s original letters from the 1970’s we will re trace his movements from Australia through Indonesia and South East Asia to Cambodia where Kerry’s life was cut short after straying into Cambodian waters in 1978.
