Richard Woods, catamaran designer and sailor, talks about bow shapes on cruising catamarans, and why bow shape should be a consideration to buyers of catamarans. Richard covers issues related to seamanship and the drawbacks of plumb or reverse bows when docking or hitting flotsam at sea. The Dip is an alternative manouvre to tacking and there are times when you just need to go for clear air so doing it can be beneficial. A lot of sailors forget to ease their sails which is incredibly slow. A dip can be very similar to any mark rounding manouvre where you have to ease and trim in the mainsheet while turning. In this video I show you how to do so. Suggestions? Put them down below in the comments! Be kind to the waves and the waves will be kind to you! Jandia Playa in January.
Join the fantastic crew of the Quino El Guardian, world-renown whale shark researcher Dr. Dení Ramírez Macías, and her team as we return to attempt to ultrasound pregnant whale sharks and manta rays in the Archipielago of Revillagigedo again! The whale shark (Rhincodon typus) and the giant manta ray (Mobula birostris) are filter feeder elasmobranchs. In some countries, these species constitute a fishing resource, while in other countries, they are more valuable as an opportunity to attract tourism. Therefore, the sustainable exploitation of these species depends significantly on the knowledge of their populations. This knowledge is minimal. Both species are especially vulnerable due to their biological characteristics as they are slow-growing, late to reach sexual maturity, and found in small populations. All of this is why the IUCN Red List recognizes these species for the Conservation of Nature. In the Archipielago de Revillagigedo, we can find giant manta rays and whale sharks that enable Dr. Dení Ramírez Macías and her team to study these charismatic giants. Their studies have focused on demonstrating the presence of pregnant females in both species showing that this is a critical habitat for these elasmobranchs and requires a top priority for its conservation. Our expedition will focus on obtaining an ultrasound in females of both species to corroborate that they are pregnant and to evaluate the degree of the embryonic development. This information will help to substantiate the theory that these waters are necessary for reproduction and to strengthen the protection of habitat for the conservation of the species. A second goal will be to place a satellite tag to see her movements. Our goal is to use the regular itinerary for diving in Socorro, knowing that we will be open to using any opportunity that presents itself to ultrasound whale sharks and manta rays. Deni will also be doing presentations throughout the trip. These presentations will include but not be limited to: Presentations: 1. Following the Giants: Whale Sharks 2. Conservation Biology of the Whale Shark 3. The Giant Manta Rays from Revillagigedo 4. Ultrasound on Mobula Rays 5. I3S software for whale shark and giant manta ray photo identification ABOUT DR. DENI RAMIREZ Dr. Dení Ramírez-Macías is the director of Whale Shark Mexico, a passionate conservationist, powerful advocate for the ocean, and pioneer in her field. As a scientist, her innovations both above and below the sea have led to the founding of multiple NGO’s, numerous scientific publications, advanced the careers of her students, and has inspired future generations to take an active role in ocean conservation. As a scuba diver, she is applying scientific research methods to her work underwater, most recently by ultra-sounding pregnant whale sharks and manta rays in an effort to learn more about their reproduction. Her work is being used to create three protected areas in Mexico. Deni's research has taken her around the world and her research has been part of several international films including the National Geographic Discovery Chanel. Deni was inducted into the Women Divers Hall of Fame in 2020.

Pre-Covid motorcycle tour to Baler, Aurora from February 22-24, 2020. Ang Kwento ng 3 Batang Babae. February 22, 2020 This afternoon, I went to Ermita Hill to take some drone shots. As I was alone, I was approached by two young girls who offered to take my picture. I told them I was OK and that I was done flying my drone anyway and was about to leave. Around dinner time, I met up with Igan for dinner and drinks. As I was staying in a quieter side of Baler, I had to walk around 700 meters from my lodging to a river ferry station to get to Sabang beach where I walked an additional kilometer. Igan and I ate dinner at Nalu Surf Camp. The place was nice and the price was reasonable. During dinner, I noticed the the two girls I earlier saw on Ermita Hill were approaching the tables at the restaurant. I couldn't tell if they were selling something or begging for food. We met up with a few friends who were also in Baler. We decided to retire early though because we were still feeling tired from the ride. I took a tricycle to the ferry station. At the ferry station, I saw the same two girls and this time they were with a third one. They have been waiting for a paying passenger so that they can cross. Apparently, children can cross for free but the boat will cross only when there's a paying passenger. I asked them if they were the same ones I saw on Ermita Hill earlier today and they said yes. I told them I also saw them at the restaurant earlier. They were holding plastic bags of bread crust. They also said that they've made 16 pesos each from hustling the whole day. I gave them 50 pesos as I was about turn to my Airbnb. They were very thankful. When I got to my room, I realized I gave them more than what they earned "working" for many hours. I wish I had given more. I wish everyone would give more. So make it a point to support local businesses and buy local products whenever you visit local tourist destinations. Also, try local delicacies and tip the waiters. And yes, let the children take your picture then give them a tip. I think tourism should not benefit only big businesses.

I push South to Boca Raton via Delray Beach, and the next morning at Lake Boca Raton, the motor won’t start. I go on the search for suitable parts to rebound the fuel line, which isn’t so easy in such a “high rent” neighborhood.

The term “Internet of Things” was coined in 1999 by the British technology pioneer Kevin Ashton to describe a system where the Internet is connected to the physical world via ubiquitous sensors. These sensors nowadays equip all connected products and companies in all industries work on applying – and advancing it, from industrial to consumer products. Today's connected products need to be smarter in order to reach their full potential. They also need to act more sustainable to be accommodated within the boundaries of the planet. To do this we use Machine Learning. And not just any ML, but Edge Machine Learning, where we process data locally, onboard the device. The word Ekkono means ‘cognition’ and that is what we do, we give things a cognitive mind by making them self-learn the normal condition, understand the surrounding environment it operates in, and detect or even predict when the conditions change. Watch this very first "On The Edge With Ekkono: Why Machine Learning Needs Edge" and learn the true benefits of using Edge Machine Learning.
We've finally got Melody Under cover so we can get her dry and continue to work on her during the horrible winter months. It's absolutely freezing here now in North Wales....... Like seriously freezing! But with her cover on Melody is much warmer and dryer. Along with that we've removed the in mast furling system and it's all good news! ______________________________________________________________________ We are Andy, Melissa and Jack, a sailing family based in North Wales, and for the past couple of years we have been looking for a bluewater sailing yacht to take us around the world. Well we've finally found her. Our new sailing yacht is a John Teal designed 38ft Steel Pilothouse Cutter. She has been standing ashore for at least 15 years and now we're embarking on the huge challenge of refitting her and doing her up ready to go sailing around the world. In this episode we are stucked in Cuxhaven due to Anders injury but I do some excursions on bike, take a swim in the North Sea and goes on a Seal Safari. We also plan our next passage with the aid of Predict Wind and in the end reenforcement from Denmark arrives. We also look at a Yawl trying to apply newly acquired knowledge from one of our favorite Sailing channels Rigging Doctor..but think it's better to let them explain This was supposed to be a link but I seam to have done something wrong but I think you can copy the text between the brakets and search then you should come right to it "https://youtu.be/iWysnE-_ESM" They made a whole serie of episodes explaining different types of rigg etc. that we highly recommend. As usual our cat Litza will pop-up and tell us her opinion now and then. Unfortunatly there is no sailing in this episode. We are a middle aged couple that has left our hectic business lives to go sailing with our boat Fridá af Wisby and our cat Litza. The sailing in our home water the Baltic Sea is part of our preparation to sail to the Mediterranean Sea. Anders has been at the sea most of his life and sailed for the Swedish national dingy sailing team as a young man. Gitte has also grown up with boat and spent every summer sailing with her father as a teenager but made a pause of about 15 years without sailing as an adult, had just begun to pick-up the interest before she meet Anders a 4 years ago. Onboard we also have our cat Litza a 3 year old Devon Rex we call her the cattain because cats always decide over their humans. Litza is a Devon Rex cat and she is the real cattain aboard. Fridá af Wisby is a Wauquiez 47 pilot saloon that we Gitte and Anders bought in UK in 2019 and that we have sailed to Gotland and in season 1 2020 we sail in the Baltic Sea.

With Nandji on the hard stand and the hospital in Penang a three hour drive away, we need to drive across Malaysia for our check up. To make things more challenging, Malaysia has implemented strict travel restrictions and is on a level of lockdown... With road blocks and police check points to navigate, this is a pregnancy we wont forget! With no sailing experience, we bought a yacht, got it blue water cruising ready and set off from Australia sailing to the Pacific! We have since cruised through New Caledonia, Vanuatu, the Solomon islands, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia and then onto the boat yard in Malaysia to prepare for the years to come. With a new engine, we continued onto Thailand, then back down into Indonesia and specifically West Sumatra to live the island life and chase the surf. With our Sailing plans changing, we returned to Thailand to wait for the weather and begin our journey to the northern route of the Indian Ocean to Sri Lanka before heading south across the Indian Ocean once cyclone season has finished and the trade winds begin! We were on our shake down sail when the mooring we were on failed and our home ended up on the reef. We saved the old girl and got her back to the boat yard for repairs to continue on our adventure! Ready to sail across the Indian Ocean, we were only days away from leaving when the pandemic begun closing countries around us... We are stuck for now, but enjoying the slower pace as we have our first baby on the way to be born overseas! We departed the east coast of Australia in July 2017 and have since sailed over 10000nm offshore. We have explored some amazing countries and met some beautiful people along the way. We have experienced so many different and diverse cultures, dived pristine reefs, surfed solo in the middle of nowhere, spent weeks at sea, dealt with storms, big waves, strong winds and had the time of our lives doing it! The adventure is just beginning as we sail West with the trades around the World! Ten years ago, before kids, we sailed a Lagoon 380 named "Honeymoon" halfway around the world to Sydney, Australia. Along the way we shared our experiences with family and friends via YouTube, and by happenstance created one of the earliest sailing channels still posting. We also realized what an incredible experience we were having and that someday we wanted to do it again, only this time with our kids. OUR BOAT is a Ferrari red Outremer 51 performance cruising catamaran. We chose this boat as it has been specifically designed for the purpose of blue-water sailing. It was designed and built to withstand the stress of "sailing multiple times around the world safely and in comfort." And yes, she's nice on the eyes too. OUR ROUTE has taken us from the Boston/Cape Cod area of the United States down to the Caribbean and then through the Panama Canal. At the time of posting this we have dealt with the Coronavirus lock down in New Zealand and are now cruising again in Australia. PLEASE COMMENT!: As a "family channel," we are required to actively monitor all comments, but we still want to hear from you. Tell us what you think! THANKS for watching all. This episode WE continue sailing and exploring the Baja Peninsula and the better part of the Sea of Cortez The Sea of Cortez is know as "The World's Aquarium", and we certainly see why! It is home to many MANY species of whales, so our visual radar is on high alert in hopes of spotting a few! We concentrate on going out and about as much as possible, either swimming around anchorages on nearby reefs, or on paddle boards during calm days on anchor. We also battle low and irregular winds while sailing between islands and anchorages, but find a perfect sunset beach to enjoy a pizza picnic campfire on.
Rough Sea’s Sailing near west palm and our visit to Peanut Island.
We went on an amazing hike in Durmitor in Montenegro, where we saw mountain ranges as far as the eye can see. This is part of the Dinaric Alps. Check out more on our blog at https://www.sailingawen.com/ or follow our adventures on our podcast, Covert Castaway, anywhere you listen.

Sit back and enjoy some epic sailing footage of Class40 Palanad 3! Palanad 3 win the RORC Transatlantic Race Trophy. 🏆 Congratulations to Olivier Magre and his crew on French Class40 Palanad 3 as the overall winner of the 2021 RORC Transatlantic Race. Palanad 3 has posted the best elapsed time under IRC to win the RORC Transatlantic Race Trophy. Palanad 3 is the seventh winner of the antique sterling silver trophy and the first Class40 to do so. Antoine Carpentier’s Class40 Redman, also a Mach 40.4, was second overall under IRC. “I am so happy to have won overall; it is a magnificent trophy!” smiled Olivier Magre. “This is a perfect race for Class40 because it is relatively shorter than other transatlantic races and the timing is perfect to join other events such as the RORC Caribbean 600. I am sure that in the future if we have a number of Class40s it would be a beautiful race and we have the added attraction of challenging bigger boats as well. I think mixing Class40s with other boats under IRC is a good thing because it increases the challenge and the performance required.” #RORCTransatlanticRace © palanad3 _ sailingteam Palanad 3 ©
Captain Glenn Shephard talks about the three Tiwal 2 aboard the super yacht Parsifal III. 00:00 Introduction 00:14 Which Tiwal model do you have? 00:28 Why did you choose Tiwal? 01:33 Where do you sail? 02:00 How is it going so far? 02:16 Which characteristics did surprise you? 02:51 Did you personally try Tiwal? -------------------------- ** The Tiwal 2 Sailboat ** The Tiwal 2 is a small inflatable sailboat. It is designed to be carried on a cruising boat. Light in weight, at just 90 lbs, it fits in two easy-to-store bags. Its assembly is very fast: 15 minutes maximum. For single-handed sailing or with a child, the Tiwal 2 is a delight for the whole crew, young and old alike. With the Tiwal 2 you’ll want to stay in the anchorage! Best Boat 2020 Award - SAIL Magazine "A darn good sailer" "No matter how you choose to carry it, and no matter what waters you sail, expect to have an awful lot of fun when you get there." Boat of the Year 2020 Award - Sailing World U.S.A. " By far one of the most fun boats of the week. I’m a Tiwal fan " " It’s well engineered (…), it can handle the big stuff. " -------------------------- ** The Tiwal story ** * The Birth of Tiwal * As a girl, the first time our founder Marion Excoffon was told, “No!” by her father when she asked to use the family boat, her life as an inventor began. It was then she started dreaming of building her own craft, an ambitious feat that would come true years later. On the road to creating an innovative high-speed vessel for everyone from kids and first timers to expert sailors who want to test limits, there were a number of prototypes, failures, challenges and headaches. But, if there’s one thing Marion’s known for, it’s her sailor’s grit! * Combining Fun & Technology * The award winning Tiwal concept is easy assembly and storage - maximum fun and performance for watersports and activities. A Tiwal isn’t your average dinghy! Our design is the result of tons of coordination, talent, and technological savvy. * A Growing Global Community * For our community of Tiwal skippers (more than 2,500 worldwide!) all this innovative design means their focus is fixed on the pleasures of watersports and having tons of fun on a responsive sailing craft. With excellent upwind and downwind abilities combined with high-speeds, Tiwals are a part of both fun and professional performance.
