It is a great way to learn how to go fast on reaches when you have 20 knots with consistent breeze and big chop. This can be done on both the windward side and the leeward side of any coach boat. Ever started a boat project or sailboat restoration just to realize that a simple project can turn into a major restoration. Well this is what we found when we started our sailboat restoration. We had to anAirConditioner Disconnect, Two Water Pump Removals, a Tray Removal, a shaft strut, and rudder, a rudder show, a transducer, a plumbing job and more. We needed to remove the Old Non-Functioning Transducers and the old wood backing plates in order to install a new sleeve for our B&G DST800 3 in 1 transducer. The challenge was that the transducers were buried under a shelf a couple of water pumps and some plumbing. So watch as I contort in order to get all these barriers out of the way in order to remove the transducers. Youngest skipper ever 4 years ago, Alan Roura was once again the youngest participant in this 9th edition of the Vendée Globe. 12th in 2016, the Swiss finished 17th this time around but improved his time by more than 10 days! And it was accomplished while facing serous keel problems. Hats off to you Alan!

Forced to abandon the race south of Australia 4 years ago after dismasting, Stéphane Le Diraison was this time able to complete his objective and fulfill his dream by finishing his first Vendée Globe. A race full of determination and perseverance while facing multiple problems. A true sailor’s race. Huge congratulations to you Stéphane. 🤝

Our sailboat has ablative antifouling and it all has to come off. We know there is damage to the boat (obviously) but what we don't know is if there is MORE damage beneath the nasty paint. Pressure washing helped, but it's time to get to work with some sanders, scrapers, paint stripper, oh and we even try an air compressor and soda blaster (lol). In 1997, after missing out on his Olympic rowing medal dream, Rob decided to row a tiny seven-metre plywood boat, 2500 miles from Tenerife in the Canary Islands to Barbados in the Caribbean. It took 6 weeks and he and his rowing partner, Phil Stubbs, won the inaugural Atlantic Rowing Race. His first taste of a blue water ocean crossing. Skip forward to 2014, and married with three children we invested in Javelot a 43 ft Fountaine Pajot catamaran. Armed only with Robert's 3 years of racing P class yachts from the age of 11 to 13, and Rachel's non existent sailing knowledge, we set off to learn the ropes of ocean sailing. We broke stuff, replaced stuff and got to know our boat before heading offshore with the kids, Finn 17, Declan 15 and Ivan 12, in tow. Through trial and error, we have become confident wayfarers. Our plan? To sail around the world. Part of the journey will be retracing Rob’s eldest brother Kerry’s travels at sea. Using Kerry’s original letters from the 1970’s we will re trace his movements from Australia through Indonesia and South East Asia to Cambodia where Kerry’s life was cut short after straying into Cambodian waters in 1978. The Best Places to Explore in Miami - Tips and Tricks for Sailors | Harbors Unknown Ep. 18 #Miami . A dazzling, tropical paradise that envelops you with its sultry ocean air, rhythmic sounds of Latin America, the Caribbean and American hip hop, and satiates your taste buds with spicy, rich flavors. The third most populous city on the East coast of the United States, and the seventh largest in the country. Miami is well known for its beaches and lively nightlife but we're exploring a different side of the city, the sailors side. There are hundreds of marinas and anchorages in Miami and Miami Beach, which are two different cities. We’ll cover three different anchorages; one just off of #RickenbackerMarina, another by #NoNameHarbor and the last just off #DinnerKeyMarina. The anchorage off of Rickenbacker Marina is the northernmost spot. It’s well protected and with the marina right next door, you may be able to tie your dinghy to the dock. There are a couple restaurants within walking distance with a great view of the city. There aren’t many other amenities within walking distance so you’ll need to bike or take an Uber or Lyft. Once the boat is settled, head south to #KeyBiscayne or cross the William Powell Bridge to go into the city. Brickell is Miami and South Florida's major financial district but it’s also home to Mary Brickell Village, Brickell City shopping mecca, and home to innumerable young professionals. An assortment of popular restaurants & boutiques make-up Mary Brickell Village, a development designed after a French-style village; it’s a hub for social gatherings and entertainment. Just a bit further south, No Name Harbor is located on the southern tip of Key Biscayne, in Bill Baggs State Park. This anchorage is a frequent stop before jumping over to the Bahamas and the Caribbean since it’s somewhat protected but not too far up the channel. There are showers and bathrooms nearby, as well as Boaters Grill restaurant and a boating supply store. Hurricane Harbor is another nearby, protected anchorage, but there’s quite a bit of boat traffic. Check out episode 6 Sailing Our #Seawind1600 #Catamaran from Ft. Lauderdale to Biscayne Bay for the full scoop on Key Biscayne. From No Name Harbor or the anchorage by Rickenbacker Marina, the Miami River is a dinghy ride away. If you’re starting from No Name Harbor, you’ll pass by Stiltsville, a group of wood stilt houses located one mile south of Cape Florida. #Stiltsville has a colorful history that dates back to the 1930s. Unfortunately, the Leshaw House was destroyed in a fire this year and will not be rebuilt. To get to the Miami River you pass under the William M Powell Bridge. The glistening architecture of the Miami shoreline is quite impressive from the water and definitely a memorable experience. There are a number of bridges along the river, ranging from just 12 feet to 75 feet. All of the bridges open except for the 75 foot people mover, Metrorail, and I-95. There are certain hours the bridges remain closed so be sure to check the times. Restaurants Kiki On the River and SeaSpice have become hot spots, so the people watching is fantastic while you enjoy a delicious meal or cocktail. #DinnerKey anchorage situated on the western side of #BiscayneBay in #CoconutGrove is one of South Florida's best kept secrets. There are some shoals and very shallow areas along the 4 islands found off of Dinner Key Marina, so definitely keep a close eye on the charts and stick to the channel. There are actually two places where boats can anchor. One is the official anchorage, on the south west side of Dinner Key Marina. The other is a temporary anchorage in the turning basin on the northern side of the marina, near the Chart House and Monty's Marina. Since the anchorages are very close to Coconut Grove there are plenty of amenities and marine services and you may even be able to access WiFi. There are a couple places to tie up dinghies, one being at the south end of the marina, near pier 7. After a week in Simpson Bay, we successfully navigated going through the bridge and docking in a VERY difficult slip on the work dock; we are loving the little victories! On 9 July 2020, a moving company packed and removed all of our belongings from our flat in China and sent them on a container ship back to the US. They arrived in Florida in early October. We managed a quick turn around, putting the boxes and all of our new purchases on a container headed for Sint Maarten. Our palettes sat in a warehouse until they were delivered on 23 December. It felt a bit like Christmas; unpacking our belongings after 8 months ALWAYS feels like Christmas. The big elephant in the saloon is the washing machine...the unit that DOES NOT fit in the head as we thought it would...so, what do we do? After a 19 year wait due to the civil war in America James Ashbury became the first to trigger the deed of gift and challenge for the America's Cup. Ashbury was encourage by his yacht Cambria's performance again visiting American sloops in a local races around the Isle of Wight, so much so that he proposed a two part challenge for the America's Cup. First was a race from England to America across the Atlantic, which was to be followed by a race around Long Island Sound. Ashbury's yacht Cambria defeated the US sloop Duantless in the race across the Atlantic, at this point the New York Yacht Club stepped in, using the deed of gift to invalidate the challenge, instead proposing a race of approximately 32nm from Stapeton out around the Sandy Hook Lightship and back. As in the first America's Cup we would see a fleet race with Cambria taking on the might of the New York Yacht Clubs racing yachts. Ashbury was not happy with the arrangement which allowed low draft centreboard yachts to enter. These vessels had an advantage at the start of the course, where they could retract their centreboards in the shallows as they exited out of long island sound, shortening the distance they needed to sail. Magic, a sleek centreboard yacht used this to her advantage, taking an early lead and never looking back. Cambria battle hard but struggled to get clear air as the fleet from the New York Yacht club worked together to keep her behind. As with most America's Cups there was always controversy, Cambria lost a foremast when she collided with Tarolinta, who was on port. Without the protest procedures we have in modern racing Cambria raced on but could only manage 10th place out of the 18 boat fleet. The 1870 America's Cup reignited the fire for the yee old mug which would intensify with regular challenges over the next 2 decades. Some interesting facts from the 1870 America's cup are as follows :- * Was the 2nd America's Cup. * Was the 2nd and Last America's Cup which was contested as a fleet race. * Was the second cup to have the boats start under anchor. * Was the second time that the UK and America battled for the Cup. * Was the second America's Cup to have a collision. Dass die Segelboote von Sirius unsere Traumboote sind, das wissen wir schon eine ganze Weile, schließlich konnten wir beispielweise mit einer Sirius 35 DS einen wundervollen Törn "Rund Poel" erleben. Nur, der Preis ist sehr hoch. Nicht dass er für die Qualität nicht passend wäre, allerdings durchaus eben nicht zu unserem "Budget". For what started as a very mild winter in Turkey has slowly become colder , the weather more unstable and unpredictable making it harder to find shelter from the barage of cold fronts and storms. After dragging our anchor set in a mud base during a squal we decided to give ourselves a break and head to Finike marina for a few days. would be the first time since we started that we have had the luxury of hot showers, free wi-fi, power and water. We also chose this time to meet new Aussie/Kiwi friends and catch up with other cruisers.
