We test our limits as sailors by riding the back of a hurricane down the coast of New England! A hurricane is passing to our east and we decide to ride the north winds the low creates as it passes by to make a jump south. In anticipation of a rough sail ahead we rig our downwind poles to catch as much wind as possible. The weather is cold and the wind is blowing but we're under control and making good miles, but realize just how tough it is to sail with a baby in these types of conditions. Safe sailing. Boat: White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built. The camera gear: Main camera is a Panasonic Hc- V700 with a Rode External mic with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Action, underwater scenes and small blogging is done with two Osmo action cams. Some boat shots are done with a Dji gimbal camera. Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff! There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access. Content: I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘bland and mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining. Comments and being at sea: I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. While Im out on the Ocean I have completely no communications with the outside World. As you know, we've been waiting quite some time for the new catamaran to arrive. So why not spend that time sailing? When our friend Jeff asked if we'd like to spend a little time in sunny Florida, (and why not?, the snow had just arrived to Annapolis) we jumped at the chance to help him get his Catalina 36 further down the coast and into warm weather. Since the Gulf Stream was pushing very close to the coast of Florida, and to a potential inlet point of Cape Canaveral, we planned to enter in St. Augustine. That would mean approximately 115 miles and 24 hours out in the open ocean. To make things even more fun, we had a buddy boat for the trip! Taylor and her mom, of @TaylorsTravels . In 1997, after missing out on his Olympic rowing medal dream, Rob decided to row a tiny seven-metre plywood boat, 2500 miles from Tenerife in the Canary Islands to Barbados in the Caribbean. It took 6 weeks and he and his rowing partner, Phil Stubbs, won the inaugural Atlantic Rowing Race. His first taste of a blue water ocean crossing. Skip forward to 2014, and married with three children we invested in Javelot a 43 ft Fountaine Pajot catamaran. Armed only with Robert's 3 years of racing P class yachts from the age of 11 to 13, and Rachel's non existent sailing knowledge, we set off to learn the ropes of ocean sailing. We broke stuff, replaced stuff and got to know our boat before heading offshore with the kids, Finn 18, Declan 16 and Ivan 13, in tow. Through trial and error, we have become confident wayfarers, kind of. Our plan? To sail around the world. Part of the journey will be retracing Rob’s eldest brother Kerry’s travels at sea. Using Kerry’s original letters from the 1970’s we will re trace his movements from Australia through Indonesia and South East Asia to Cambodia where Kerry’s life was cut short after straying into Cambodian waters in 1978. During his time away from work, Jamie lived on board and cruised South East Asia. One of his life dreams is to sail around the world. His plans came together at the end of 2018 when he met a Filipina lounge singer in China. Princess was yearning for a vacation since she had been working many years to support her family. Finally, her siblings got their own jobs and she decided to join Jamie on Jupiter² and go sailing. It was a wild decision for her because she had never sailed before. Eighteen months later we were getting married on a beautiful beach on Barbados, bare foot, very simple ceremony just like a dream! We say we’re taking Yoda for a walk but she’s really taking us for a walk because if it weren’t for her we wouldn’t go. Thank you Yoda. A chance to move, be outside and observe the world around us. And time to think; about the upcoming transition, Fabio retiring, us trading the place we’ve called home for so many years for a nomadic life on the sea. All during a pandemic. We thought about waiting but we had already ordered the boat so it was coming. We decided to continue putting one foot in front of the other. Taking the steps to become #fulltimecruisers. Sell the house, leave my job at an advertising agency, learn to make videos, move on the boat, adjust to smaller living quarters and limited resources, start a YouTube channel and brand, learn the intricacies of sailing this boat, because each one has its own nuances, fix the boat, and make plans for our upcoming departure. There has been so much change. But change is good. It forces us to adapt, learn, and grow. Now we’re ready to spread our wings and explore #HarborsUnknown. Those harbors unknown to us. Complete emptiness in front of Cuba's coasts and enormous uncertainty what'll be happening after the arrival! http://annamera.de​ Hinweise zur Einreise nach Kuba für (deutsche) Segler. Eine Einreise mit dem Schiff ist viel einfacher als allgemein angenommen! Es werden weder eine Anmeldung noch einen PCR-Test benötigt - wie auf vielen anderen Inseln, aber eine aktuelle Auslands- Krankenversicherungsbestätigung auf spanisch. Weitere Papiere: Pässe, Schiffspapiere und eine Bescheinigung über eine Schiffsversicherung. WICHTIG! Mit Eintritt in die Hoheitsgewässer wird die gelbe Flagge „Q“ unter der Steuerbord-Saling gehisst. Als Ausländer darf man auf Kuba nur in einem offiziellen Port of Entry einlaufen. Die Begrüßung und „Behandlung“ sind sehr freundlich und kompetent. Kaum festgemacht, kommen die Vertreter von Gesundheitsbehörde, Hafenamt, Zoll und Agrarministerium an Bord. Anders als erwartet, wurde unser Schiff nicht durchsucht. Als erstes erfolgt eine Temperaturmessung (auf der Stirn) und der PCR-Test durch die Nase. Danach werden die persönlichen Daten und die des Schiffes aufgenommen. Es werden Gesamtkosten in Höhe von gesamt 265 US-Dollar fällig: für die Ausstellung eines Touristenvisums 75 US-Dollar pro Person für eine Aufenthaltsdauer von 30 Tagen und für die Einreise (des Bootes) einmalig 55 US-Dollar, die in bar zu bezahlen sind und zwar wahlweise in Euro oder Dollar. Für den PCR-Test wird eine Gebühr von jeweils 30 US-Dollar pP erhoben, die allerdings mit Kreditkarte (ohne amerikanische Herkunft) zu bezahlen ist. Der Aufenthalt kann nach 30 und 60 Tagen um weitere 30 Tage verlängert werden. An der kubanischen „Festlandküste“ muss das Boot in einer der offiziellen Marinas oder an einem dafür ausgewiesenen Ankerplatz liegen. Die Liegekosten belaufen sich auf 0,70 US-Dollar pro Fuß in der Marina oder 0,30 US-Dollar am Ankerplatz, für unsere Schiffsgröße in der Marina 30 US-Dollar, knapp 800 MN. Wichtig: Das Schiff muss auf dem „Festland“-Kuba in einer Marina liegen! Nur dadurch ist die völlig freie Bewegung im Land möglich. Eine Armada von Beamten und Sicherheitspersonal „schwirrt“ regelmäßig um das Schiff herum und vermerkt vermeintliche Vorkommnisse in das „Libro de Incidente“. Kuba ist viel sicherer als andere Inseln! Auf den Cayos ist die Bewegungsfreiheit viel größer. Freies, kostenloses Ankern ist erlaubt, es sei denn in unmittelbarer Nähe der Insel-Marina, wo Gebühren erhoben werden. Obwohl die Corona-Fallzahlen auf Kuba moderat sind, muss jeder eine Gesichtsmaske (Nasobucco) tragen und bei Anstieg der Fallzahlen kann es vorkommen, dass Straßen, Stadtteile oder ganze Städte abgeriegelt werden. Die ehemalige Touristen-Währung CUC ist seit dem 01. Januar 2021 abgeschafft. Es gelten jetzt überall die Montetas National (MN), der Peso, der an den meisten Bankautomaten gezogen werden kann. Dennoch sollte man größere Dollar- oder Eurobestände in bar dabei haben, weil vieles (?) letztlich doch nur in Devisen zu bekommen ist. Man sollte davon ausgehen, dass die Bezahlung mit Kreditkarten selten oder nie funktioniert, jedenfalls im Sektor Bootswirtschaft! Alle Angaben ohne Gewähr! Van Kökar varen we in een ruige tocht door naar Mariehamn, de hoofdstad van Åland. Wij zijn Ben en Felia. Jaren hebben wij de droom gehad om samen over de wereld te zeilen.
