Hello! Join us as we leave Sardinia in this video and embark on our 2 day passage across to Menorca, the first of the Balearic Islands coming from the East. We have a hard time getting comfortable as we're close-hauled or close-reached the whole way, so we get used to the boat being heeled over as best we can. This means minimal movement and activity. It's eat, sleep, watch repeat! We come across some rough weather along the way, a couple of scary squalls. We document our watches and give updates along the way, until we finally make it into the harbour of Mahon! We dinghy ashore and check the beautiful city of Mahon out. #sailing #lifeatsea #tayana37 Sorry about the bad sound here - our microphone broke and we couldn't get it fixed very easily whilst at sea! Thanks for watching. Hit Subscribe if you'd like to support us! ----------------------- ABOUT US: Hello! We're Alex and Lars. MORE THAN A WEEKENDER With the hallmark of a weekender range whose qualities have stood the test of time for over 40 years, this wonderful family cruiser powerboat is designed for multiple boating programs, and therefore for a wide variety of fun leisure activities! Powered with up to 2 x 300 HP outboard engines she boasts excellent performance. Click here to meet her: https://www.beneteau.com/us/antares-outboard/antares-11 -- About BENETEAU -- The first BENETEAU boats sailed from the shipyards of Croix-de-Vie over 135 years ago. Since that time, the BENETEAU brand has been synonymous with quality and innovation to all those who have taken to the water – first by the fishermen who made their livelihood from the sea and then by the legions of recreational boaters around the globe. Over the years, our commitment to innovating and embracing ideas, no matter how unconventional, has been at the forefront of who we are in order to bring you the best boat possible. BENETEAU was one of the first boatbuilders many years ago to use computer-aided design (CAD) as well as lighter, stronger composite building materials. We’ve also been at the cutting edge of using greener materials and processes to do our part in protecting the incredible world which we explore. However, all this innovation doesn’t mean we’ve turned our back on tradition. One thing we’ve discovered in over a century of boatbuilding is that new-world innovations work best with old-school craftsmanship. This combination has resulted in some of the most iconic sailboats and powerboats in the world – supremely seaworthy yachts renowned for their sense of style, luxury, and comfort along with their creative use of space and new technologies. -- Philosophy -- We’re a lot like you. We love the water in all its forms – the ocean, bays, lakes, and rivers. And we love sharing the boating lifestyle with our family and friends. This love manifests itself in every BENETEAU built in any one of our many manufacturing facilities worldwide. Every BENETEAU sailboat and powerboat on the water reflects the best efforts of the finest architects, designers, and craftsmen along with the highest quality materials and the latest innovations. When you purchase a BENETEAU, you become a valued member of our BENETEAU family. For this reason, our after-sale service is second to none as evidenced by the multitude of National Marine Manufacturers CSI Awards for Excellence in Customer Service. At the core of this outstanding service is our exceptional dealer network. Every one of our authorized BENETEAU dealers will be there for you – from choosing the right yacht to the handover and beyond. Your dealer will be your able guide when it comes to maintaining your boat properly and will help you maximize the return on your investment when it comes time to step up to another BENETEAU – and it usually does! We wouldn’t have it any other way. Welcome to Episode 18 of our series about resorting our abandoned sailing yacht. This week we pickup our amazing new welder from Lincoln Electric, also finally buy some steel to start cutting and welding and fabricating and Melissa works like an absolute machine sanding and sanding and sanding and sanding the old paintwork on the coachroof. We are Andy, Melissa and Jack, a sailing family based in North Wales, and for the past couple of years we have been looking for a bluewater sailing yacht to take us around the world. Well we've finally found her. Our new sailing yacht is a John Teal designed 38ft Steel Pilothouse Cutter. She has been standing ashore for at least 15 years and now we're embarking on the huge challenge of refitting her and doing her up ready to go sailing around the world. Follow along with our journey and help us with any advice and tips you have along the way. Sailing around Cape Verde islands has gotten even more tricky. Due to Covid, we must get a test before leaving and entering other islands. We must get official authorizations to anchor at locations other than the main harbors of Mindelo or Praia. And then I have a problem. My propeller does not have enough thrust to power Galopin to our last anchorage. Thanks goodness Peter is close by to tow me the few miles to anchor safely. It's part of the Covid pains & high seas rescue. Sailing Galopin in Cabo Verde Africa. #sailing #caboverde #africa Some say it’s The Best Sailing Channel on YouTube! Unable to return to our home country, we are forced to put plans in motion to have our child abroad. Lockdown and ready to pop! https://www.sailingnandji.com In this episode, we have left Nandji high and dry in the boatyard, patiently waiting our return. Malaysian interstate borders had been shut for weeks and with covid restrictions briefly easing, we took the opportunity to move closer to the hospital while we could. January saw a second wave of covid infections across Malaysia, prompting borders to be closed again, shops shut and a new lockdown to begin. Unable to return to Australia to be with family during this time has been difficult as we are now alone in a foreign city expecting our first child. BUT, together as a family this is just another obstacle to overcome. We are thankful the hospital is close by and we have a fancy home on land to call home for now. One month disappears as we patiently wait to become parents. If you are enjoying our videos, sign up to Patreon to help support us, our production and the adventures. We have since cruised through New Caledonia, Vanuatu, the Solomon islands, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia and then onto the boat yard in Malaysia to prepare for the years to come. With a new engine, we continued onto Thailand, then back down into Indonesia and specifically West Sumatra to live the island life and chase the surf. With our Sailing plans changing, we returned to Thailand to wait for the weather and begin our journey to the northern route of the Indian Ocean to Sri Lanka before heading south across the Indian Ocean once cyclone season has finished and the trade winds begin! We were on our shake down sail when the mooring we were on failed and our home ended up on the reef... We saved the old girl and got her back to the boat yard for repairs to continue on our adventure! Ready to sail across the Indian Ocean, we were only days away from leaving when the pandemic begun closing countries around us... We are stuck for now, but enjoying the slower pace as we have just had our first baby, born in Malaysia! Now completing our second major refit, Nandji is ready for the world when the world is ready for us!!! We departed the east coast of Australia in July 2017 and have since sailed over 10000nm offshore. We have explored some amazing countries and met some beautiful people along the way. We have experienced so many different and diverse cultures, dived pristine reefs, surfed solo in the middle of nowhere, spent weeks at sea, dealt with storms, big waves, strong winds and had the time of our lives doing it! Why do I sail solo in a 55 feet yacht when you can cross oceans in almost anything? I really wanted a multihull yet I ended up sailing a modern 55 monohull. This is not about monohull versus catamarans, or telling you what to buy or not. Simply sharing my journey and how and why I ended up in a 55 Monohull. It a bit nerdy video but if you are wondering about hull designs and why I sail a modern production yacht, you might get some answers and also understand my statements. It's not only black and white mono versus catamarans or as some believe blue water yacht is a category, Not everyone can afford a custom-built yacht no matter hull design. And the custom build yachts within your budget might be old. Not everyone likes to have an old yacht or old-school design either. Does size matter? And what about old myths that origins from frightened competitors 20-30 years ago, desperately trying to find arguments against new yacht manufacturers with great engineering and high tech production lines. Are these arguments still valid? Is it true if you wanna sail around the world the only thing that counts is skeg hung rudders and a long keeled ketch? I don't want to offend anyone and if that happens here it's not intentional. Yachts are almost religion. It has been a challenge not to talk about my yacht but it's not to brag about her it's only as an example. I'm not pointing at any brands in my illustrations or statements. I'm no expert and I definitely don't have any blueprint. But I dare to share with you my point of view of it all and invite you to see how I was thinking and honestly tell you why I'm not sailing a catamaran. The answers might surprise you, but then again that was the biggest advantage old Vikings had :-) Thank you for watching and hope you enjoy this video! Most of the time I sail singlehanded but occasionally I do have sailing friends onboard. Still in the Caribbean due to Covid and was supposed to be in Asia by now. Even though this is season 3 on youtube I have already sailed 4 seasons full time but did not make that many videos in the beginning. Before full-time sailing, I have sailed several seasons in the Med prior to this, and obviously also in Scandinavia. I have been traveling the world before and also been an active regatta sailor. I had my first sailboat at age 7 and been sailing ever since. PLEASE BE KIND IN THE COMMENTS! I'm just a normal person sharing my travel adventure through my eyes and experience from my perspective! Remember how I do things might work for me but not for you. It might even not be the correct way to do things, and I don't have the blueprint either. I'm not perfect and nobody is. The day I believe I know it all and don't think I can learn new things I should go ashore.
Just before arriving to see Margarida I was hit by several squalls and the furler got jammed in both directions - I could not furl or unfurl the genoa. This video is about what I did to recover the sail. It is not the best solution. Squalls were coming through every hour or so and it was the best thing I could think of at the time. I also discuss what I believe would have been the best solution and also a backup. Give it a thumbs up if you liked this episode!
