But there can be nasty surprises. No one wants to think about it, but if you or your family are prone to seasickness, it can ruin your boating experience! In John's case, it almost ruined his chances of convincing Jacqueline that they needed a boat! We share our story about feeling "Ooogy" and a couple of suggestions on how to alleviate the worst of the symptoms!

Ever wonder what the centerboard of your sailboat looks like? Here is what the centerboard of Reverie, our 1985 Pearson 34 CB looks like. We also shared with you a URS (unexpected rudder surprise). When we rebuilt the rudder the guys at the shop did a great job on the rebuild. The one thing we did not accounted for was the amount of clearance needed between the rudder and the hull. Of course, we were not able to assess this until we re-installed the rudder. Check out what we had to do.... For those of you considering buying a boat with a centerboard, one of the most important things you can do the minute you buy it inspect and replace the pendant. The pendant is the mechanism that allows you to bring the centerboard up/down. It consists of an attachment bracket, a pin, a wire/rope/combination of both line that leads to the cockpit, a winch or pulley system to give you leverage depending on the weight of your board. On Reverie the system is pretty simple, but we needed to inspect the board itself to assess the condition and also to clean the centerboard trunk for painting. On this video we will show you the centerboard and the mechanism as we pulled it from the boat. Thank you very much for watching our videos. Revealing our plans for resorting our yacht. This week we detail how we see the next 12 to 18 months going and how we plan to tackle the restoration project. We're governed by various factors including the weather, work commitments, money of course and family, childcare and the ever pervasive COVID. But we're plugging along and the plan is this Spring and Summer 2021 Get the Mast down. Get all the welding done. Get all the painting done. Get the Engine Serviced. Get the Steering Sorted. Service the mast sheaves etc. Autumn 2021 Get the Mast Back Up. Sort the running Rigging. Work on the Solar Arch and Davits. Winter 2021 to 2022 Interior Woodwork, Electrical and Plumbing. Spring 2022 Possible Splash. We're fully aware boat projects take twice to three times longer than you think and cost twice or three times what you expect. So we're anticipating that and if the list above takes til 2023 then that's fine but we have to set a goal and have some sort of time scale in mind. You wouldn’t know it by watching this video, but Bonaire is currently on level 6 alert, which the absolute highest on the island. Bonaire is an island of 20000 inhabitants, and we arrived in Bonaire at the end of January, there were only 11 cases and almost no restrictions. A couple of weeks ago, we started noticing the numbers going up at a way faster pace, and it was confirmed that new strains of the coronavirus had sadly made their way to the island. Last year’s lockdown in Saint Martin left us effectively locked in our boat for about three months. We were stuck in a dirty inland lagoon with no means to escape. Changing anchorage was neither allowed nor possible and swimming behind our boat was neither allowed nor attractive. The situation in the entire ABC islands is sadly way way worse than a year ago, but we feel grateful for the sensible measures that the authorities have taken and for our ability to continue sailing, swimming, snorkeling and diving. WE|Sail and snorkel! What else is there? Our time at Espiratu Santo has been wonderful. The winds participate with us and we sail north and then south just in the directions we want to go. Lucky for us we are not beating into the wind making it for some enjoyable sailing. We also bare the cold and jump in the rather chillier waters during the winter months to see what was lurking below. This are seems to never disappoint with plentiful fish and lots to see. We couldn’t ask for better weather! Actually, we could have had a touch more wind but regardless of that, the PredictWind Girls Championships at Kohimarama Yacht Club last Saturday was epic. There were over 120 sailors participating in the regatta - and not one boy to be seen. This regatta is all about the girls! It comes after the excitement of the America’s Cup and new rules in the top of the sport that include females on crews, such as SailGP, The Ocean Race, and the Olympics. There was a lot of chatter amongst very small female sailors about their chances of sailing an America’s Cup boat in the future. Their ambitions are to be taken seriously, in 15 or 20 years time.... who knows what we will see! The wind tried to play ball for the girls, but tide was ripping and the wind was dying. It created frustrating and shifty conditions for racing, but that’s yachting! The race committee did a great job in getting races off and making sure the girls had a decent regatta. The girls of Live Sail Die were so excited to be a part of it and see so many keen young women sharing their love of sailing with each other. The latest Bestevaer 45 named 'Lionne' was launched into the water at KM Yachtbuilders. Her name and logo represent a fierce lioness, ready to take on the seas head first. Her stunning black carbon mast and boom are a real eye catcher. Under water she has a ballasted centerboard for shallow draft and double rudders. Thanks to the tiller the cockpit area is very spacious and comfortable underway.
