. ✅ SEADAMP ☸Per maggiori informazioni: https://www.seares.it/seadamp-evo/ 📶Per l'acquisto: https://www.seares.it/ordina-seadamp/ 🎁 Codice sconto: MARIANNAPREMIUM . https://www.patreon.com/sailingmokara This episode covers 3 months (Oct - Dec 2020), so although it may seem that we didn’t stop socialising it was mainly over the weekends. There where a large number of families now in the anchorage with us, and we counted in the region on 25 children. So as you can imagine there was always something going on. Dylan and Nathan had no problem ploughing through their school in the mornings in order to go out and play in the afternoons. With 25 children around there was also always a birthday or two to celebrate. From jungle hikes to boat parties and sleepovers to beach get togethers, we were never board! It was still the rainy season so we had quite a few wildlife encounters. The first unexpected one was a snake curled up in the helm station of our neighbours boat! When there is a lot of rain the snakes get washed down the rivers and into the bay. They obviously try and find the first place to dry out and soak up the sun, which in a busy anchorage is normally a boat. This snake had managed to get himself on board without being detected, when the owner of the boat eventually spotted him he flung him off the side into the water. Of course the snake swam straight back, and tried to slither up the through holes in the hull of the boat. I must say I am very glad it didn’t pick Mokara as I am sure the screams would have been heard back in the UK! Another lucky snake encounter was in our local mangrove tunnel. A tunnel we often ride through and explore as we have seen lots of sloths and monkeys in the trees. Nathan spotted a huge Boa Constrictor sleeping on a branch. I am not a snake lover at all, but this snake was a beauty. He was not in the least bit interested in us, and didn’t even wake up when we were around him. Next was a sloth! I had heard of sloths swimming to the boats, but I didn’t really believe it! But one morning on our way into school we spotted a beautiful large sloth hanging on the pulpit of a boat. We thought it was best to leave him, as he had obviously got himself there ok, so surely he will get himself to where ever he wanted to go ok. Days went by - hot days! And every morning we checked he was still there. We couldn’t believe he could just hang there in the full sunshine all day long and not need water or food. So on day 3 or 4 we decided we needed to take him some mangrove leaves, which he seemed to really enjoy! We also tried to get him to climb onto a broomstick we had brought along so that we could safely take him to land but he was not interested. It was so special to get so close to a wild sloth. They really are such chilled creatures. He tried to stay awake for our visit, however every now and then nodded off to sleep. We read that sloths are quite able swimmers and are much faster in the water than they are on land. We really wanted to see him swimming, but that evening some sailors managed to get him off the boat and back into the trees in the marina. A much better spot for him. We also managed to go on a great jungle hike for one of the older boys birthdays. We were taken to the jungle in a local taxi organised by our guide. To be honest I didn’t think the taxi was going to hold us all when I first saw it! And I had flashes of it falling apart with everyone in it in the middle of the jungle, but we got there and back fine! The boys had sore bums for a day or so afterwards from sitting in what they called “the chicken coop” at the back! Its all part of the adventure. The jungle was amazing, we built a campfire to grill sausages on, swam in the river and then walked through the thick forrest. Sadly we didn’t spot any animals, probably because they heard us coming from miles away, but we did get to see some incredible plants. As things started opening up in Panama we were allowed to move the boat again. So a group of us decided to go and explore the other bays close to Linton. Playa Blanca is a beautiful bay which is usually overcrowded with local tourists. Thanks to COVID we had it all to ourselves. We stayed the night with some friends, who now live in Panama, on board. Sadly the Aero Naval, which is the maritime police came to make sure we stayed off the beach at curfew time (4pm). They told us we could social distance on our dinghies! Christmas came by quickly, and like the rest of the world we were back in lockdown, which meant we had a very quiet Christmas with just the 4 of us. On Christmas eve we decided to make some fun decorations to take around to all our friends and sing carols from our dinghy whilst we delivered them! We’ve made so many friends over the past year and a half that become very close as we are sharing our days together. The community is also very close, which means people are forever calling in to check you are ok, or stop for a drink or borrow a cupboard item they haven’t been able to get hold of. The men tend to always be swapping ideas and solutions to boat problems.

Australia is experiencing a natural disaster flooding event. We do our best to find somewhere safe to anchor as we have seen the unimaginable on the news. Houses, cows and other large debris are floating from upriver in the various river systems along the East Coast of Australia. We made it through the Yamba bar just in time before the enormous amounts of rain hit. Causing swell to surge and the bar becoming undesirable to cross. We just have to sit it out on anchor in the Clarence River. Thinking of getting some camera gear? This is what we use, and would highly recommend these products.

L'équipage du No Land.

Carolyn & Rick, from Australia, just had their new Garcia Exploration 45 "Snow Gum" aluminum centreboard sailyacht delivered at Garcia Yachts shipyard in Cherbourg (France). They present their "10 years plan around the world", and explain how far their Garcia Exploration 45 is the perfect boat for them to run this project, while taking an active part to Garcia owner's community. After Rick had sail to the Arctic Circle with @59NorthSailing and "looked at so many videos on Youtube" as he says, Carolyn & Rick now produce their own contents on the SnowGum YT channel you can visit here: http://bit.ly/SnowGum. Feel free to discover it and to follow them on their sailing adventures!

First - There's no more ice at the Marina! So that's exciting! We get on board and template some ideas, figure out some replacement requirements, and basically spend a couple of hours having a fun time planning and dreaming. Of course, I thought showing our Saturday morning routine might be fun too, and it's a chance to see Chloe at her treat-loving best!

A gentle sail to test the rigging of our two Squibs and a Soling (the latter not in this video). The winds later picked up, unfortunately sailing single handed and just using my mobile, proved to difficult to take the best part of the sail. We sailed down wind to Normanton Church and then cross wind between the Peninsula and the Church at a reason speed. After a while headed up wind towards Rutland Sailing Club and the right up the southern leg of Rutland Water, with the wind on on my port beam. All in all a rather nice first sail of the season.

Hawila was built in 1935 as a coastal sailing cargo vessel, planked in 50mm oak with length up to 6m. Planks were fastened using treenails going through the frame and wedged on both sides, the seams were then caulked with hemp, and later filled with pitch. The last month we replaced more than 260m of the old Hawila's planks, some of them in still good shape of preservation and still holding strong to their treenails! On those oak planks we replaced, we chose to increase plank thickness from 50mm to 65mm, with length of 11 to 14m, this in order to add more strength and durability to the vessel. The Danish oak we used was planted 200 years ago, and air dried outside for 2 years before being fastened to Hawila. In addition, we increased the thickness of the galbord to 85mm, nearly twice the original thickness. In this short video, we present a sum-up of the processes used to replace a planks. We are currently working on the refit of our sailing vessel Hawila. This structural overhaul will make her fit for the first Transatlantic crossing. Hawila will be sailing 60 tons of organic products as well as trainees across the Atlantic, in an emission-free way, showing that respectful, ethical, and clean transport is possible. Australasian farmers and food suppliers are among thousands of local businesses hit by the ongoing suspension of cruise operations, with losses to the Australian economy now surpassing $5 billion over the past year. The video features national wholesaler Select Fresh Providores, one of Australia’s key suppliers of fresh fruit and vegetables to cruise lines. In it, the company’s Group General Manager Steven Biviano explains the huge effect the suspension has had, not only on his own business but also on farmers and regional communities. In peak season up to 50% of Select Providores' business was generated by cruising, and that farmers and other producers needed time to plan crops for cruising’s return. The health protocols cruise lines have developed in response to COVID-19 are among the most stringent in the world and are already operating successfully in several other countries. Now is the time for the Federal Government and states to finalise a timeline for a carefully managed, phased resumption so businesses like Select Fresh can plan their recovery. #WeAreCruise
Sometimes sanding drives you crazy and you just have to smash something up to make you feel like you've achieved something. This week, in our customary battle with ever changing weather conditions, we tackle the inside of the forepeak, the sugar scoop and the front of the pilothouse. All in interior metalwork in the forepeak has now been treated and painted and we've got some insulation back up so we can sleep in there again. Melissa took our her frustration on the sugar scoop, or bathing platform, or whatever you want to call it. The top deck on the scoop was made of plywood which had rotted through so we needed to rip that off so we can replace it with a steel top and also make some hatches to utilise that space for storing warps. And Andy fettles the frames on the front of the pilothouse to remove decades worth of old butyl, sikaflex and bathroom silicone, sands back the flakey paintwork and gets some good quality Jotun 87 primer on that area. We would also like to announce our association with Pro Marine Store who are supplying our chandlery and general boaty bits for this project. Life aboard in Cape Verde Africa is never what you'd expect. Who knows what does life have waiting for us. My boat is on the verge of breaking loose because of the constant insane wind force. Cape Verdean spirit opens its arms with one party after the other. And when we want to sail off, everything becomes questionable. As a live aboard this is the life I've chosen. This episode we experience a boat collision between our sailing buddies on Yacht Wolfhound and another sailboat in the anchorage. We welcome Erica's papa, Jacques, aboard for a week and after a long but good sail to some isolated islands, we awake to find that there had been boat collision during a blustery night. At about 4am a boat anchored right in front of Wolfhound ended up dragging anchor and slamming right into the front of our friend's yacht. During the whole ordeal, the boat that dragged anchor had inadvertently gotten a rope tied up around the anchor as well as their anchor chains mixed up!! We of course spring into gear to help, and luckily were able to assist the two parties and not only get the boats anchors separated, but also the rope free from the propeller! Watch Butch Ulmer of UK Sailmakers go through a 25-question rules quiz with an internet audience. Every four years the Racing Rules of Sailing get updated. In these updates, most of the rules remain the same; however, there are usually some minor fixes to close loopholes. Other times, there are changes made that make the rules simpler to understand. Nevertheless, new rules and old rules, we need to learn them all. While the rule changes seem to get all of the attention, the vast majority of the unchanged rule book remains unknown, misunderstood or simply un-read. To help you assess your rules fluency, watch how Butch Ulmer explain the new and old rules.
Now that is difficult for most to visit our yard and see our yachts for themselves, we hope to bring ourselves a bit closer to you with this video: A walk-through of the interior of the Bestevaer 53 Motoryacht 'Bryndis'. Stylist Christien Starkenburg explains the interior: “Just imagine, with this motor yacht you travel through ever-changing naturel spaces which automatically create the connection with the basic elements of the earth and life: sun, water, air. A kind of primal feeling. From your boat, you experience pure stunning views like the sunset, sunrise, waves, lapping water. These universal natural phenomena make every single one of us feel good. It is honest. Pure.”
