November/December 2020 We cleaned up our window. It was nasty, dirty and leaking. Of course like in every project on the boat it will lead to more projects. We also had this "painting inside hull in the V-berth project" what took us quite some time. We had a lot of goodbyes We moved our boat from Medemblik to Amsterdam for the winter with a beautiful sunrise on our way. We leave Stonehaven Bay with a much cleaner bottom and sail across to Happy Bay. We don’t get to stay there long because there’s a storm brewing and we need to find a more protected anchorage. We can’t go forward because the forecasted winds are going to change direction and we will end up on a lee shore on anchor, so we decide to head back and over to Sandy Bay in the hope of finding a free mooring to weather out the storm. Cornish Hedgerows this time of year, beware where you step or sit as you may just be in for a big surprise. UK's only venomous snake, the Adder (Vipera berus) the often shy adder can be found basking in the sunshine in woodland glades, heathlands or old Cornish walls. An adder bite is a very rare occurrence, and can be quite painful, but is almost never fatal to humans, but be careful walking your dogs near locations. Adders average lifespan is up to 15 years. Jekyll Island, Georgia - Sailing, Cruising, Exploring with PILAR | EP53 Last November, we visited Jekyll Island while spending 6 months in the GA area around st. Simons Island. Serenity, Roseate Spoonbills, Spanish Moss covered trees, historic homes, bike paths, beaches, and marshes were ours for a few days. To visit Jekyll Island while sailing, enter St. Simons Inlet and turn to the west along the intercoastal waterway. We anchored in St. Simon’s Bay (designated anchorage) - not too close to the marsh as it gets very shallow. We had a great view of the Brunswick Bridge, were greeted by stingrays on our arrival, and enjoyed beautiful sunsets and sunrises while at anchor. Jekyll Island is famous for it’s seemingly endless bike paths that wind around the island. Plan an entire day for this sightseeing adventure. Our favorite spots were the Historic District, Driftwood Beach, and the Clam Creek fishing pier. The Jekyll Island Bike Trail totaled about 15 miles and was plenty wide for bidirectional riders. There are also a few shortcuts that weave through the maritime forest in the center of the island if you need a shorter route, but most of the inner island is unsettled. Plan time for lunch break, beach breaks, and plenty of scenic views. https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/georgia/jekyll-island-bike-trail We set off one morning for a dinghy ride down East River - long but very beautiful. Of course Stephen scoped out his fishing spots for future trout catches, and we enjoyed watching the area’s pink and white Roseate Spoonbill. This looked like a juvenile with it’s lighter color. Roseate Spoonbills forage in the shallows of fresh, brackish, and marine waters including bays, mangroves, forested swamps, and wetlands. They nest and roost in trees and shrubs along the water's edge. We stopped at Jekyll Island Marina where we docked and rented bikes for $20. They also have a restaurant and pool - and some boats that have seen their better days. You can alternatively dock at the Wharf restaurant, but be sure to check as time and rates vary depending on the season. TIME: National Historic Landmark District Our first stop was the National Historic Landmark District, which features the Jekyll Island Club Resort. A little history… In1733, General James Oglethorpe founded the colony of Georgia and named Jekyll Island in honor of Sir Joseph Jekyll, his friend and financier from England. In 1736, English, Spanish and Creek Indians met there for negotiations. In 1747, the states first brewery opened. In 1792, Christophe DuBignon purchased part of the island. In 1879, Christophe’s descendant and his brother-in-law started a private hunting club for the nation’s wealthiest individuals. Don’t miss the pathways viewing the numerous “cottages” of the wealthy 1% of the late1800s, who wintered there with their families. Victorian structures are surrounded by landscaped lawns and gardens accented by fountains and reflecting pools. TIME: Driftwood Beach is a popular natural area right on the point of the inlet, where natural forces create breathtaking photo opps with coastal trees, sand, water and sun. Vlog# 34 In La Cruz in Banderas Bay a fellow sailors boat came off the anchor and smashed into the rocks, breaking off his keel and demolishing his boat. This is such a tragic thing to happen, it was his life, and his home for many years. So Trav took some tools and headed over to help clean up and take things off the boat. After the disappointing cancellation of the Helly Hansen Women’s Challenge at Manly in 2020, there was a strong fleet out on the water for Sunday’s running of the 2021 edition. This was the final race of the Sydney Harbour Women’s Keelboat Series, wrapping up the inaugural four-race season across four clubs on Sydney Harbour. Racing was conducted over two divisions using the PHS handicap and was split by a Female Helm subseries and an All-Female Crew subseries. Despite the deep chocolate colour of the water – a legacy of last weekend’s major storms - the breeze filled in to a steady 12 knots plus with perfect timing as the race got underway in bright sunshine. Leaving the start line off the Fairlight foreshore, the course took the 32 teams in various configurations to marks at South Head, Grotto Point and back to Manly, giving plenty of opportunities to test crew work for the Female Skipper and all Female Crews. Justine Anson on the TP52 Smuggler took out line honours. In the All-Female Crew section, Tracey Richardson and the crew onboard the Adams 10 No Friends took the Division 1 win from Corinne Feldmann and the crew on the MBD 41 The Banshee second and Pam Davis and crew on the Etchells Wildlife third. Division 2 was won by Wendy Tuck and her crew aboard the J/24 Pacatack while Jules Lawson and crew on the Force 24 Allsail/Aqualuna placed second and Robertina Varga and crew on the J/24 Innamincka was third. In the Female Helm section, Division 1 victory went to Nicola Wakefield Evans on the Seaquest RP36 Whistling Kite with Smuggler second and the Azuree 46 Kayimai helmed by Liz Charles coming in third. Division 2 was won by Johanna Adriannse on the Beneteau First 31.7 Pinta 11, while second went to Bridget Canham on the Payne 38 It Happens and third to Janette Syme on the J/24 Okavango Delta.

In episode three we get technical again and aim to answer a burning question: what is the “Engine Above Deck”? You might think it’s a pretty straight forward answer (no, there’s no literal engine). And, at first it kind of is, but once you dive into it, it’s actually quite complex. Press play to learn all there is to know. The term refers to integrating the aero-- the North 3Di sails, the Southern Spars rig, and Future Fibres rigging-- with the boat’s hydro package: the AC75’s hull and foils. In the 36th America’s Cup, all the systems, from the rig to the twin skin mainsail and its control system, to the foils under the water were designed to work in harmony to maximize performance potential. To make this happen, you need the North Design Suite software. All sail designers at North Sails, including the embedded team designers working in the America’s Cup teams, rely on the five different programs within the North Design Suite to build their team’s AC75 sails: DESMAN, SPIRAL, WARPS, FLOW, and MEMBRAIN. The cool thing about the whole process is that it’s not just a tool for the elite designers to play with; it ultimately trickles down and benefits all customers-- including those who enjoy Wednesday night racing and weekend cruises.
