A big question we asked ourselves when leaving on this adventure was: how realistic is it to surf waves while cruising and living on a sailboat. This may have been our FAVORITE stop in the Exumas! Lee Stocking Island has so much to offer, and we loved spending some time here, exploring underwater and on land. We are in George Town, a popular cruising destination in the Exumas, Bahamas. We're waiting out some strong winds and make the best of them by getting out WING FOILING, and Tom even gets a gig doing some coaching! After a week, we decide to head back north to enjoy some more of the Exumas before continuing our journey south. SO, we head over to Lee Stocking Island where we meet up with our friends from SV Bohemia. We visit an abandoned Marine Research Center, which looks like a scene right out of a horror movie! Welcome to our first official SHORT! We really feel like we got the full experience while cruising the Exumas Cays, especially with what happened at the end! Amandine's mom is cruising with us for a few weeks and we're getting to see as many amazing things as possible. In this postcard, we bring you along to meet the pigs on the beach, dive the reknown Thunderball Grotto, visit some of the most beautiful beaches in the world! AND!!!! WE GOT TO SWIM WITH DOLPHINS! In an isolated anchorage, in beautiful turquoise water! For more than an hour they swam around Bagheera with us, literally playing with us! With trade winds blowing south east every day, it is rare that when heading south east, you can sail downwind. But it happened! We had the perfect weather, with clocking winds that would give us a chance to sail downwind even while sailing around the Berry Islands. We'll let you find out how it worked out! We pick up my mom in Nassau and make our way down to the Exumas. The scenery is breathtaking, and everything that we'd heard it would be! We made our way across the Great Bahama Bank from Bimini to the Berry Islands, a passage that turned out to be our best one yet! The wind was perfect, the waves not too big, Bagheera soared across! In Bimini, we met Bohemia and her crew, Thomas, Agus, and their dog Kite. They were also headed to the Berries so we decided to go together, and then explored the area together! They become our first buddy boat and will be for a while, so you'll be seeing much more of them! This is it! The moment we've been working towards! After rushing to make it our of Montreal in time, many months of sailing down the US east coast, in cold, rain, and high winds, we are SO ready for the Bahamas! And we got quite the welcome! From incredible views, to very friendly locals, to dolphins surfing at our bow, we are amazed from the start! We are in Coconut Grove, in Miami, FL, where we spent a few weeks doing some last boat projects in preparation for cruising the Caribbean! Before going, we need to make sure we have a functioning fridge and a reliable transmission. We decided to adapt our icebox for the best space utilization, and install a fresh water tank at the bottom. In this video, we explain what materials we chose for this and how the project turned out! After some major stocking up, paperwork, and covid tests... we are finally ready for our crossing! It's been a lot of build up until this moment, and we are so so SO excited to start cruising the Caribbean. It's warm!! Even the water is warm! So we finally get out on the water as much as possible as we continue our way south to Miami! We're always looking for good windsurfing conditions, but have recently been wing foiling a ton! After losing our propulsion in front of North Landing Bridge in Virginia, we had to find some kind of solution before being able to continue on. It was cold, and only getting colder, but we didn't want to let it discourage us. Through ups and downs, so far we've been able to hang together and make the best of it! We spent a few weeks recharging in Annapolis, stocking up on materials for the boat, and spending time with family before continuing our sail south. After a bumpy passage down the Chesapeake Bay, we officially enter the Intercoastal Waterways, but we don't get far before engine troubles slow us down... With nice weather but no wind, we slowly make our way up the Delaware Bay and across to the Chesapeake Bay, then south to Annapolis. Enough with the boat work, it's time to actually start sailing! In this postcard, we make it to New York City, where we go for a beautiful sail with Amandine's parents, before hitting the ocean for the first time! Bagheera handles well despite some rough conditions as we embark in our first overnight sail and make it to Cape May. Also, we had some fun and made a little intro for our videos.
