The Annapolis Boat Show is over, but the real work begins! At sunrise, I head back to the docks to help with the massive teardown — floating docks are being dismantled, crews are casting off lines, and nearly 100 boats start departing in a well-orchestrated bit of organized chaos. I’m helping move the Island Spirit 525e hull #3, the same model as my new catamaran (hull #5) that I’ll be getting in January. It’s a great behind-the-scenes look at what happens after the crowds go home. Bulwarks! They give slightly more freeboard to help keep ocean waves off the deck, and more practically, they give you something to walk on when heeled over really far while bluewater cruising. Herby builds the supports for the bulwarks with Totalboat Silica Thickener and Polyester Resin and then covers over the joint with 1708 fiberglass. This is the initial tabbing which will be further reinforced during later stages of the build. Right now, the bulwarks are just going to support the tent that I’m building to cover the boat and let me work regardless of the weather. I sold my house, cleared out my belongings, and began to acquire mountains of sailing equipment. We planned to set sail at the beginning of March 2021—and that's what happened, despite COVID-19. Brigitta was completely surprised, of course, even though sailing around the world fit much better into her professional life than mine. But in the following six months, Brigitta has made amazing progress and is just as excited about our big adventure as I am. We have now been traveling for a total of four and a half years. One adventure follows another, and we enjoy every day anew. In search of freedom and independence, a thirst for adventure and a love of nature, we – Brigitta and Hannes – are sailing around the world together. In this episode, we make it to Taormina and drop anchor for the night. While we’re asleep, the weather takes an unexpected turn — this time for the better — so we decide to take advantage of the window and motor sail to Rochella through the Straits of Messina. We end up leaving about an hour later than planned, which means there’s a good chance we’ll arrive after dark. Still, it’s the only window all week where the wind and current aren’t working against each other, so we go for it. The crossing starts out calm, with the wind at around 35–37° apparent at 7-10 Knots , and as we turn the corner north, the swell builds a bit and the wind shifts to a perfect 60° apparent — not too strong, but ideal for a smooth sail. We arrive just as the sun sets, and we’ve got some solid stats to share from the passage. Enjoy the video — and as always, sail safe! After months of sailing through tropical heat, our family traded turquoise seas for snow-capped peaks. This rare adventure took us from Langkawi, through Singapore and Sydney, all the way to New Zealand — where we swapped bikinis for beanies and helped Minnie and Pa take their first sail on their own catamaran before heading south to Mount Ruapehu for our first time in the snow. Contrary to popular belief, living on a sailboat isn’t one long holiday. Running an ocean-going home means constant planning — weather, water, safety, and food. So stepping away for a week on land was a much-needed reset: family time, long hot showers, cool air, and the chance to just be. After the most stressful border crossing of our entire lives, we have found ourselves a couple hundred miles inland and in the country of Namibia! The feeling is surreal. We are used to being surrounded by ocean and now, we are in the desert. The contrast couldn’t be more extreme. This trip was always a gamble, but before leaving Africa, We wanted the full, iconic African experience, just us, the open road, and our Land Rover Defender. But ole "Landji" has other plans. It’s losing coolant with no visible leaks, clean oil, and that dreaded EMS alarm won’t stop and with my seriously lack of car knowledge showing through, We’re starting to suspect a cracked head gasket… and potentially a full engine rebuild, both, we can’t do in this town. Whilst we crossed the border in time, the hard part isn’t behind us... it’s still ahead. After a few days of downtime to regroup and plan our next move, we are off to the Land Rover guy in Windhoek, 800 kilometres away. Through the desert. In Africa. What could possibly go wrong?
