We crossed the Gulf Stream from Ft. Lauderdale to Bimini, Bahamas on our Leopard 45 sailing catamaran. The trip was easy and almost uneventful, until we just about, literally, ran into some friends of ours, SV Oliluki, at the entrance to the Bimini Channel. We attended our first sand bar beach party, made too many Margaritas, and got up close and personal with some sharks and stingrays. And lots of awesome new music from Damon Fowler! Ein Überführungstörn von Les Sables d’Olonne in die Türkei auf einer Lagoon 42. Die Ägadischen Inseln (Isole Egadi) sind ein fast unbekanntes Paradies für Segler. Die Inselgruppe westlich von Sizilien besticht durch malerische Fischerdörfer, traumhafte Buchten und smaragdgrünes Wasser. Mit Marettimo, Favignana und Levanzo sind nur drei der Inseln bewohnt. Immer noch prägen Fischer die Region, die früher bekannt war für den Thunfischfang. Massentourismus ist ein Fremdwort.

Ein Rose für die Lady als Willkommens Gruß am Ammersee ;-) Ahoi und herzlich Willkommen an Bord, seit 2011 segelt die „Sir Shackleton“, ein über 110 Jahre altes 2-Mast Segelschiff aus Holz mit vielen Gästen über den schönen Ammersee. Jetzt starten wir das Instandsetzungs-Projekt „Sir Shackleton Comeback“ im März 2021. Es ist ein Abenteuer, auf das wir uns einlassen. Finally! After weeks of worry, Aqualibrium went splash late last week. Once we had the starboard fuel tank drained, we could finally start work....so much cleaning, and then a layer of anti-fouling paint, running out and marking the anchor rode, bringing all the mattresses and cushions on board, MORE cleaning, replacing the battery charger, and so on, and so on.... For painting the bottom of the boat, I will say this - it is a unique feeling to be underneath the boat, realizing that 16,000 pounds or so is sitting above you, held in position by some wooden blocks and a couple of metal stands. The mind does tend to wonder, "What if..."? Jacqueline and I were exhausted after working on the boat while she was on the hard, largely because to get on board (or bring anything on board) we had to climb a step ladder to the swim platform, then up a vertical ladder to the aft cockpit. Doing that once or twice is okay, but after 20 or more times in a day....? Our bodies hurt! But she is floating now. There is still so much work to do, and yes....more cleaning...but it is such a joy to see her on the water. This coming weekend we will stay on board, and bring Chloe! This will be fun! * and corrections from the video: - I refer to a 6:1 ratio (length of chain : water depth) for the anchor chain (the "scope"). It should really be 7:1 although apparently 6:1 is acceptable for a short stop. Regardless, at least I know what my markings signify for depth.

The mast has come down!!! After 40 years standing proud and tall the mast came down today for a complete refit and to facilitate further repairs to the coachroof and chain plates. We also welcome back our good friend Tim, who is a marine engineer and experienced sailor. Tim is studying marine engineering and he is mid way through the clipper round the world yacht race, which of course has been halted due to COVID. We're privileged to have him join us and lend his skills taking measurements and doing calculations to give us some interesting indeas on how Melody might sail once she's back in the water. We spend a couple of days in Victoria, BC, enjoying city life and visiting with friends before taking a weather window up to the entrance of the Juan de Fuca Straight on the West Coast of Vancouver Island. After a winter of no sailing, we get a sunny blue bird day, nice breeze and start to feel comfortable on the boat again before finding a spot to drop the hook in Beecher Bay and prepare for our next biggest challenge known as Shipwreck Alley. While my boat is going back in the water after a successful haul out, another boat is lost due to the extreme weather conditions here in Cape Verde. Sailing up the Sao Vicente Canal is not easy. When covid hit, we decided to stay with our boat and our dog to have our first born baby overseas. The unknown of leaving these two behind, was not fathomable. It has been difficult a decision to deal with, add many many hours of hardwork, constant visa issues and the potential we were being kicked out... We now have a beautiful daughter and a vessel that floats!!! All those long days in the boat yard on a grinder, all those litres of sweat dripping off my nose, all seem like distant memories as we reach this major mile stone in cruising once again. We have since cruised through New Caledonia, Vanuatu, the Solomon islands, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia and then onto the boat yard in Malaysia to prepare for the years to come. With a new engine, we continued onto Thailand, then back down into Indonesia and specifically West Sumatra to live the island life and chase the surf. With our Sailing plans changing, we returned to Thailand to wait for the weather and begin our journey to the northern route of the Indian Ocean to Sri Lanka before heading south across the Indian Ocean once cyclone season has finished and the trade winds begin! We were on our shake down sail when the mooring we were on failed and our home ended up on the reef... We saved the old girl and got her back to the boat yard for repairs to continue on our adventure! Ready to sail across the Indian Ocean, we were only days away from leaving when the pandemic begun closing countries around us... We are stuck for now, but enjoying the slower pace as we have just had our first baby, born in Malaysia!
