# 95 On dit que la Guyane n’est pas faite pour les voiliers, c’est juste une autre aventure! 22 avril 2021, 4 heures du matin, nous sommes debout ! Le décalage horaire y serait-il pour quelque chose ou serait-ce plutôt, le fait d’avoir dormis d’un trait, sans avoir eu à nous soucier de la bonne route de Black Lion ! Accroché par le fond sur sa Rocna, il peut enfin souffler, il a fait son job, nous a mené à bon port, juste devant celui de Degrad des Cannes, mais s’il est certain que notre point d’ancrage est bien une base d’entrée en Guyane, il est moins évident que les voiliers y soient attendus ! La preuve en est, ici, pas de veille VHF, ni au port dit de commerce, ni à la soi-disant « marina ». Dans ces conditions, nous avons sauté sur l’occasion de contacter le premier émetteur lançant une vacation, le CROSS Antilles-Guyane. Prévenu de notre arrivée depuis la veille, il semblerait qu’en cette période compliquée de Covid, notre présence soit une sacrée problématique, puisque nous avons mis pas moins de vingt heures avant d’être fixés sur notre sort, et autant vous dire qu’il faut une bonne dose de lâcher prise et d’acceptation de l’absurde pour ne pas s’arracher les cheveux en essayant de comprendre ! Pour résumé, nous avons l’autorisation de la préfecture et des douanes pour accoster, la permission de débarquer par l’ARS, cependant, nous devons après 33 jours de mer, aller faire un test PCR dans un des centres indiqués sur le site à cet effet, mais n’ayant pas encore internet, nous devons nous débrouiller pour trouver une carte sim et tout ça, avant les 24 heures qui suivent notre arrivée ! Bref, le tout à faire avant la fin de journée qui est déjà entamée de moitié, sans moyen de locomotion et en respectant bien toutes les consignes sanitaires ! Rattrapée par la réalité de ce que devient ce monde, la fatigue malgré tout de notre navigation, la confusion de cette arrivée administrative et le fait que nous n’avons toujours pas eu la possibilité de contacter les enfants, je fonds en larmes. Jonathan et Claire me manquent. Je réalise à quel point nous nous sommes encore éloignés. Je le sais, ils ont leur vie, nous la nôtre, mais c’est plus fort que moi, certaines fois, les émotions m’envahissent. Alors, pour consoler ma peine je pense à la vie de rêve qu’ils se sont créés et m’endors sur cette douce réalité. Situé sur le territoire de la commune de Rémire-Montjoly, à quelques kilomètres de Cayenne, le port qui accueille la quasi-totalité des importations et exportations de la Guyane, doit pour maintenir le trafic et permettre aux navires d’accoster, faire draguer en permanence le chenal long de 15 kilomètres et large de 120 mètres, afin de limiter l’envasement. Pour le coup, nous sommes prévenus, la tenue ici est très médiocre et il est prudent de rester sur ses gardes. Nous n’avons pas vraiment d’autre choix, car si juste à côté, il y a bien 4 pontons, une dizaine de voiliers tristement délabrés et quelques bateaux de pêche Brésilien, le stockage n’est pas une marina et nous n’avons pas le droit de nous y amarrer. Alors, au milieu de la Mahury, Blacky se détend dans un bain chocolat ! Il baigne ses jupes dans l’eau limoneuse en se laissant porter au rythme des marées, tantôt par le jusant, tantôt par le flux contraire. Autours, tranchent des nuances de verts intenses, agglomérées en une végétation si dense que les rayons du soleil ne peuvent qu’illuminer les feuillages extérieurs, du moins, avec la couche nuageuse qui nous surplombe, c’est la conclusion que nous nous faisons ! Il pleut et il pleut encore et avec le changement de température, nous fuitons, plus exactement notre Lion fuit ! Les joints se dilatent et l’eau s’infiltre malicieusement par nos hublots, s’ajoutent à ses incorrects entrismes, un problème électrique persistant résolu par enquête auditive. S’étant accordés à croire que le bruit de grésillement permanent qui résonnait dans notre cabine, pouvait provenir des vibrations occasionnées par le fort courant sur la coque, nous n’avions pas approfondis le sujet. Faute à nous, car le bruit en question, n’était qu’autre qu’une pompe de calle en fonction continuellement ! Dire qu’il suffit d’un nano bout de plastique pour être reconnecté au monde ! Pour être au courant d’une grande partie de ce qu’il se déroule autour de la planète. Il y dix ans quand nous naviguions avec Pirates. com, pour envoyer ou recevoir des nouvelles, nous allions dans un cyber ou nous essayions de récupérer depuis le bateau des Wi-Fi qui étaient la plupart du temps gratuits. We were shocked! She was so full of life and energy on our trip. When she returned she had found out that her Cancer which she had successfully fought in the past had returned. After she had recovered she had vowed to live life to its fullest, and tried to travel as much as she could! She loved animals and wildlife, which made her choose such amazing destinations. We loved hearing all about her travels and adventures. She had plans of coming back on board with us when we reached French Polynesia - a destination she had been dreaming to visit! In her memory her friends and family want to encourage as many people as they can to “live like Tracey” and make the most of everyday. They have printed a flag which people take on their travels with them and post pictures to a Facebook page in her memory. Tracey is now travelling all over the globe! We definitely have her memory with us wherever we go - and wholeheartedly believe in her motto to - “Live a great story” Life is short - make every moment count! RIP Tracey Ashton 26/06/1970 - 04/04/2021 We had perfect sailing conditions for the overnight sail to Bocas. However thanks to the strong current that travel down that cost line from Costa Rica we were not going to reach our desired destination of Bocas Town by nightfall, so we opted to turn in sooner at the Zapatilla islands. We were so glad we made this decision, as these two national park islands are simply stunning. When we got to Zapatilla 2 we discovered that the islands are very important breeding grounds for the endangered hawksbill turtles. Although it was not the breeding time, we saw evidence of last years season, in the form of old hatched turtle eggs. We walked the island and looked at all the beautiful plants and animals before we relaxed on the beach with a cold drink and a freshly opened coconut, to watch the sunset. The following morning after exploring the nearby reef from the boat, and spotting a black tip shark, we lifted anchor and headed for the mangrove anchorages in Almirante Bay. We found the perfect deserted spot, and felt like we were the only humans around. With parrots flying overhead and fish all around our boat we enjoyed paddle boarding well into the evening, before enjoying an onboard evening bbq for dinner! Life is good! Next on our itinerary was the well know Gap. Which is a small channel connecting Almirante Bay to Hospital Bight. The carts in Bocas Del Toro are not great, so you have to do a lot of eyeball navigation, looking out for changes in the water colour to determine the depths. The Gap was a beautiful stretch of water, with lovely houses lining the shores. We enjoyed slowly making our way up towards our destination, Red Frog Marina. Arriving at Red Frog Marina is super easy. As it is set within the mangroves there is rarely any wind to worry about, zero current and no swell. So you simply dive up to the dock, pass over the lines and tie up! I wish all marina docking was so easy! Once tied up, we were desperate to go and explore Bastimentos island. The boys had heard so much about the waves in Bocas Del Toro that they were eager to find some surf. So with surf boards in toe we head off in search of beaches and waves. We were absolutely gob smacked by the beauty of the rainforest clad island. With a paved road which wound all through to the other side. We spotted everything from tiny, red poison dart frogs, to sloths, white face monkeys and huge electric blue butterflies. We found the beach club, which had a stunning setting overlooking the beach. We enjoyed lunch at and relaxed in the pool. After lunch the boys couldn’t wait to go and try out their surf boards, so off we went to the beach. The following day after a quick trip to go and see Bocas Town in the Marina Motor boat, we left the dock bound for Starfish beach. The marina manager had told us that when he was there last that there were thousands of starfish there, which we couldn’t wait to see. We were very disappointed to find there there was only a handful of starfish... So instead of admiring starfish we admired the beautiful beach and sunset instead. The following morning we sadly had to start making our way back to Shelter Bay. Looking at the weather we knew the trip was not going to be as good as our journey here, so we wanted to leave with enough time so that we did not miss Tracey and Vanessa’s flight home. Lucky we did as the trip back was nasty! With 33knots of wind and waves on the nose we were beating into it all the way back. Poor Mokara fought on for over 30 hours and we safely made it into Shelter Marina after dark. The following morning Tracey and Vanessa left us for their flight home.

Annapolis Yacht Club June 16th. The first race of Series 2 got off to a wobbly start and ended up being cancelled. We will try again next week but here are the highlights before the small breeze shut down. The J105s were hilarious.

Join me as I revisit Temple #23 after 21 years and then cruise the coastline to the SE most tip of Shikoku following the pilgrims way. Shikoku is the smallest of Japan`s four main islands. Standing like a gargantuan breakwater off western Honshu, the island looks as if someone gripped a ball of dough, forming two bulges at either end. It is divided down the middle, east to west, by a mountain range. Pilgrims have come to Shikoku for centuries to take on the famous 88-temple pilgrimage. The purists do it by foot taking the best part of four months while others can do it in three days by coach or car. Kukai ( AD 774 – 835) a Buddhist monk, and a son of a Shikoku made the pilgrimage famous, He is now known by the post-humous name, Kobo Daishi. He travelled to China in AD 805, searching for enlightenment then returned to Japan three years later to found the Shingon Sect. 21 years ago, I cycled in a counter-clockwise direction, opposite that of the myriad of pilgrims I met, most of whom were clad in white. with Covid the pilgrims are sparse Of all the islands I have cycled on that epic ride 21 years ago, I was never more conscious of the sea as I was in Shikoku. Now I am seeing her mesmerising coastline from a sailboat. We started off spearfishing, Sascha got a Yellowfin Grouper and a very large Triggerfish, 0.2 lbs below the women's world record on a Pole Spear.
