First short video of our new boat

We're a Dutch/Australian Sailing family with 2 girls. You'll see us preparing our 25 foot sailing boat Empress for her return to the waters of the Netherlands and beyond. We do boat works on the hard, getting her ready for splash day! You'll see us refining our skills, like baking, Home schooling, and knot-tying during the Corona virus lockdown. The girls get cabin fever and do some crazy indoor rollerblading, and celebrate Australia day. We enjoy Haarlem Life and take a visit to the Grote Markt to celebrate Christmas. Haarlem also has a record dump of snow and the girls go tabboganing on the new man made hill in our park where Anouk loses a milk tooth. We tried making the most of winter by ice-skating both indoors and out on natural ice in our local park. Covid 19 did'nt stop the girls from celebrating other dutch traditions such as Sinterklaas or Sint Maarten and their birthdays. Enjoy!

Modifying Keene’s Dredge so that we can travel 60 miles up the river to some fantastic gold reserves. This gives us the availability, to sleep and live on the dredge/boat, while we travel up the river, taking test samples at multiple sites to work out the best locations. We can travel at about seven knots, which is great, it’s fantastic for us, it means against the current we can get about 3 to 4 knots. And on the return trip get up to 10 knots. The availability to have shade and shelter from the elements is fantastic. Huge tropical storms, won’t affect us, as we can seek shelter, so this is fantastic. Another thing is the availability to have a nice sleep at the end of the day with room to move around. We can also take large amounts of extra fuel and water, which means we can have an extended range and stay. All in all a fantastic upgrade for us. We make landfall in the Bahamas at the super friendly island of Inagua. After checking in with customs and immigration we decide to stretch our legs and explore the old lighthouse that James thinks the English built! We then head off to explore Hogsty Reef which is a unique horseshoe coral atoll located about 40 miles from the nearest land. We drop the hook behind a sliver of land and plan to stay the night.

These are our last few boat jobs before we set sail on our biggest voyage so far! After being hauled out, we noticed that our keel was in need of some TLC. We first ground back some parts to the bare metal, before treating it for rust using a rust converter. We then applied two coats of 2 part epoxy primer, followed by an undercoat primer- before giving the whole hull a few coats of Hempel Tiger Xtra. We actually won an Instagram competition with Vision Marine, the prize being all this antifouling stuff, which was so lucky!! (Brynn's brother in law) You may have also seen in a previous video, we noticed our mast wobbling at the base whilst anchored in 30knt winds. We followed this up by getting the rigging checked, and it turned out we needed a new forestay. A big thank you to Racetec rigging for doing this for us, as they were able to come out to do the job with in a week of giving them a call. Tough question to answer isn’t it? We get to ponder this while several storm systems hand out lightning bolts and wind gusts aplenty in this episode! If bad weather is on the horizon, our instinct is to find a safe anchorage and hole up while it blows over. This is usually the prudent option; although when lighting starts raining down making us feel like sitting ducks, we almost wish we were on the move instead. But then the winds pick up, and we’re back giving thanks for our ground tackle. We endure three stormy weather events, one with damaging lightning, another with sustained high winds, and a third in which we drag anchor. Delos feels like a dog let off her leash on the open ocean! With all our projects complete we hoist sail and set sail for the Florida Keys. Nothing feels better than crossing that last project off your list, stocking the boat with provisions, and heading out to sea. We set off for the first of the Florida Keys, Key Biscayne. Upon entering the pass we see a number of dilapidated structures built on stilts. It turns out this is called Stiltsville and people will do just about anything to gamble and drink out of the eyes of the authorities. After exploring the history of Stiltsville we get invited to go dive the USS Spiegel Grove, a 500 foot Korean War era landing craft docking ship that was sunk as an artificial reef. Diving on nitrox we have an amazing dive and get back into the groove of breathing underwater. Soon enough it's time to head south, closer to our final destination in the Keys- The Dry Tortugas! Safe sailing. Boat: White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built. The camera gear: Main camera is a Panasonic Hc- V700 with a Rode External mic with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Action, underwater scenes and small blogging is done with two Osmo action cams. Some boat shots are done with a Dji gimbal camera. Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff! There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access. Content: I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘bland and mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining. Comments and being at sea: I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. While Im out on the Ocean I have completely no communications with the outside World. WHAT?! SAILING BOAT STUCK IN CORAL WITH NO WAY OUT! Ep 109 Can you trust your charts to take you to a safe anchorage? We sailed in to Driftwood Bay, Hamilton Island, Australia at high tide, dropped the pick and enjoyed the cove in the afternoon sunshine on our friends jetski. The following morning we woke to find ourselves surrounded by an endless sea of coral. No matter which way we tried to move we were hemmed in on every side. Low tide had exposed a coral field that didn't show up on the satellite image of the bay, which was presumably taken at high tide. Luckily we had miraculously dropped the pick in what seemed to be the only area which gave us enough room to sit safely and wait out the change of tide so that the sea level should rise again allowing us to sail away. It took 6 weeks and he and his rowing partner, Phil Stubbs, won the inaugural Atlantic Rowing Race. His first taste of a blue water ocean crossing. Skip forward to 2014 and, married with three children, Rob and Rachel purchased Javelot a 43 ft Fountaine Pajot catamaran. Armed only with Rob's 3 years of racing P class yachts from the age of 11 to 13, and Rachel's non existent sailing knowledge, we set off to learn the ropes of ocean sailing. We broke stuff, replaced stuff and got to know our boat before heading offshore with the kids, Finn 18, Declan 16 and Ivan 13, in tow. Through trial and error, we have become confident wayfarers, kind of. Our plan? To sail around the world. Part of the journey will be retracing Rob’s eldest brother Kerry’s travels at sea. Using Kerry’s original letters from the 1970’s we will re trace his movements from Australia through Indonesia and South East Asia to Cambodia where Kerry’s life was cut short after straying into Cambodian waters in 1978.
