After living nearly two years in our self-converted campervan we decided we needed more space. So we decided to purchase a boat after spending some time on our friend’s narrowboat. Grayswood was conveniently located less that 5 minutes from my work and was found kind of by accident. I was visiting a friend who was staying in Aston Marina and whilst we were out walking the dogs, I seen the advert for Grayswood. I said to my friend “that looks a nice boat” and as I said it the marina manager appeared and asked if we would like a look inside. Naturally we did. After looking inside the boat, we made an offer after going back for a second viewing, after some negotiations within a week she was ours pending a survey. She was hauled out the following week and the survey went well. We kept her out on the hard standing for a further six weeks whilst we renovated the insides including fitting a new kitchen and bathroom. We are still planning for KEELDRAGGERPALOOZA at White Cove, Catalina Island on June 26-27! Stop by and give us a shout! ---- In this episode, we attempt to diagnose why our engine stalled last weekend while coming back from Catalina. The engine stalled at the entrance of LA harbor. We did an immediate jibe to avoid an incoming container ship and outgoing tugboat. After getting some sea room, we attempted to restart the engine to no avail. Winds were consistently 20-25kts and we decided the safest and most prudent course of action was to get a tow from Vessel Assist. After checking the diesel tank gauge and cross-checking engine hours from the log book, I did not suspect running out of fuel. Seas were a bit lumpy short period wind waves. While the primary fuel filter had a little bit of sentiment (it was changed fairly recently), the vacuum gauge did not not indicate an issue with the primary. I suspected the secondary fuel filter could be clogged. I decided to swap to the alternate primary fuel filter, replace the secondary fuel filter, and add 10 gal diesel to 100% eliminate any concerns with not having enough diesel in the tank. You'll see some swearing as well a lot of complexity in the fuel system--lots of valves and added components which, in my opinion, are more of a liability when trying to quickly resolve a fuel delivery issue at sea. This is the fourth video in the Building a Balance 482 Catamaran series. In this series, we follow the build of the first Balance 482 Catamaran from tooling to launch and sea trials of hull #1. This video shows production progress on the deck, the deck de-mold and the joining of the deck to the hull. It takes a really close look at production progress inside the hull, including furniture construction and carbon fibre door construction. For those who have not watched the earlier videos in the series, it is worth explaining that the hull mold is constructed using thousands of CNC-cut shutter ply frames and meranti stringers. This framework is then cladded with weather-proof ply and faired until smooth. The same process is then applied to the deck plug, from which the deck mold is manufactured using E-Glass and resins with structural reinforcement behind it. The Balance 482 hull is laminated in one piece without the need for additional joining laminates and tabbing, which helps to save weight. The structural PVC foam core material is thermo formed and vacuum bagged to assist with further weight savings and to provide structural integrity to this performance sailing catamaran. Furthermore, all bulkheads are properly tabbed in and we use carbon fibre in high-load areas for extra stiffness and strength. After our disastrous attempt to cross the Atlantic Ocean a few years ago, it started to dawn on us that we were going to try it again… very soon. We had officially arrived in Bermuda after a 6 days sail from St Martin, with LOTS of leaks, a few broken blocks and plenty of caulking to do in order to get us ready for a trip across the ocean again. Being a little scarred from last time, we were trying to prepare for EVERY eventuality… including checking the propeller shaft, JUST in case it had moved! It was a massive sigh of relief that we confirmed that it had not moved and if something broke on this passage, it most likely wasn’t gong to be that. It took us about a week of preparation to get us ready to go again. Now we just had to wait for a suitable weather window. So while we were waiting, we decided to rent a scooter and do a more thorough exploration of the island than we had done last time. Our first and big stop of the journey was the beautiful beaches of Bermuda. Spotting HUGE fish, snorkeling and discoing little fairy ponds in the cliffs. It was such a gorgeous place that we ended up spending a lot longer here than planned and after ways had a late lunch at the oldest pub in Bermuda, the Swizzle Inn. While we were there, we identified a pretty good window which we might have been able to cross in. Boat building is a complicated process, and this boat build seems doubly so! In our first Ruby Rose 2 video we look at the whole boat building process surrounding hull number 1. Vacuum infusion is a complicated process and following the construction of the plug then the mould, it can all begin 6,000 feet of pipe work are laid into this hull over two weeks and it is both insane and beautiful to watch. We met in the summer 2015, we were introduced to each other by the virtual world. Eighteen months later we were getting married on a beautiful beach on Barbados, bare foot, very simple ceremony just like a dream! Two days after the wedding laying on the beach, talking about sailing, Carla suggested... why don't we sail around the world? Guess what Simon said? "Let's do it" He took it with no second thoughts! And here we are, two years after that day in Barbados, we started our adventure in Croatia. We made it happen working through all the challenges on the way. We will have sailed just under 500 nautical miles in 19 days on our Seawind 1600 catamaran. The main purpose of the trip was a cruising test, not only for the vessel but for us. To discover if we are capable of harnessing the wind to travel to uninhabited islands, navigating to unknown destinations, understanding the weather and how to handle storms, making our own water, generating power mainly from the sun and living self-sufficiently. Weather Expert Chris Bedford presents weather forecasting for the 2021 Block Island Race Week. As a veteran of 10 America's Cup cycles and five Volvo Ocean Race/Whitbread races, Bedford has worked closely with some of the world's most competitive sailing teams.

In a recent Thursday night race, the smallest boat in the fleet was the only boat to read the wind on the starting line correctly and as a result won the start and the race. On the skewed starting line Emmett Dickheiser sailing the Beneteau Platu 25 RIPPLE, crossed the line on port at the left end and was able to comfortably cross in front of the whole fleet in clear air going fast, while all the boats on starboard were going slow in each other’s bad air as they had to pinch to cross the line. Remember, not all starting lines are set square to the wind. The easiest way to know which end of the line is favored is to sail to the middle of the line and head straight into the wind. Your bow will point to the side of the line that is farther upwind. Starting at the favored end puts you ahead and in clear air. When the starting line is skewed enough to the left, it is possible to catch the fleet off guard so that you can start on port tack as shown in this video. The video is a great example of how much of a lead you can get when the move is pulled off successfully. Most sailors are hard-wired to start on starboard at the right side of the starting line. It is what they have done forever. But to start well, you have to be a fast-thinking opportunist. You need to assess the fluid maneuverings of the fleet and the shifting wind – all while knowing where you want to go after the start. With so much to think about, many sailors cut out a few steps and just set up on starboard to play it safe. That creates an opportunity for alert sailors.

Nous sommes en Afrique, après 1000 miles de navigation dans de superbes conditions, nous sommes arrivés sur l’île de Zanzibar en Tanzanie. Ouah ! Quels changements en comparaison des Seychelles, ici le Covid n’est pas encore arrivé, ou plutôt, la population ne s’en inquiète pas. Pas le moindre masque dans les rues bondées de la capitale, les gens se côtoient comme il y a deux ans dans le reste du monde. C’est juste merveilleux de s’y promener. Par contre en raison du manque de touristes, nous somme harcelés par des dizaines de vendeurs en tout genre, taxis, épices, visites, etc. C’est un peu dur, mais il faut les comprendre. Habituellement ils ont 10000 touristes à harceler, t maintenant nous devons pas être plus de 100. La ville a un côté maghrébin, avec ses petites rues, remplis de couleurs, et d’odeurs délicieuses. Un vrai contraste avec ce que nous avons connu. Et comme toujours dans la joie et la bonne humeur propre à Javerne. Merci de continuer à nous suivre, et à la semaine prochaine. Une magnifique et trop courte journée, un retour au pays de Fabienne ... Nous vous conseillons ce golf exigeant qui se joue dans un cadre enchanteur. Mention spéciale au trou n°10, superbe en haut d'une colline, avec un second coup redoutable (un avis local : "tu as joué le green ? la balle, jamais elle s'arrête !" :-D ). Von außen ist das Setzen auch immer mal ganz gut zu sehen. Kann noch schneller gehen :-)

Langsam aber sicher merkt man uns an, dass wir schon seit über 10 Tagen auf der hohen See sind. Wir sind beinahe ohne Segelerfahrung auf diese Reise aufgebrochen. Das erste mal ablegen mit der Eira, war am Tag, an dem die Reise begonnen hat. Bislang haben wir die Biskaya überquert, schwere Situationen in Spanien und Portugal gemeistert, den Atlantik in 22 Tagen überquert und wir haben es geschafft unseren Motor auf Guadeloupe zu reparieren. Jetzt geht unser Weg weiter richtung Westen. Die nächsten 2 1/2 Jahre werden wir nutzen um den Pazifik zu durchqueren, den indonesischen Raum zu erkunden und letztendlich nach der Umrundung des Kap der guten Hoffnungen wieder Fuß auf europäisches Land zu setzen. Voyager en voilier aux Antilles n'est pas de tout repos. Ca ne ressemble pas à une croisière à la voile tranquille. C'est un bonne école pour apprendre à naviguer à la voile. En navigation côtière, le vent change sans arrêt de direction en fonction du relief de l'île. Il faut faire attention aux bouées des pêcheurs qui ne sont pas faciles à voir (simple bouteilles plastiques). Si l'on ne fait pas attention, on peut se prendre le bout des bouées dans l'hélice. Les rafales forcissent dans les baies de Fort-de-France et du Marin, il faut penser à réduire les voiles- Et les grains apportent du vent et de la pluie. Sunday June 20th. Today was the last day of competition and it wasn't clear who were the winners until the final race.
