Åkulla - helt klart ett utav Varbergs många smultronställen. Det är fullkomligt ljuvligt här ute! Och för att göra det möjligt för fler att upptäcka Åkulla året om, så har vi på Varbergs Sparbank ända sedan 1930-talet varit en del av utvecklingen för att skapa Västsveriges främsta anläggningar för vintersport. 🚂 1911 drogs järnvägen igenom Åkulla och framtidstron var på topp! Detta gjorde att vanligt folk kunde komma ut hit betydligt enklare och i samband med detta blev Åkulla ett väldigt populärt utflyktsmål. 🧡 1930 invigs Åkulla vintersportspalats följt av milda och snöfattiga vintrar vilket gjorde att ekonomin försämrades. 1934 ger vi på Varbergs Sparbank vårt första ekonomiska bidrag på 100 kr och påföljande år med 300 kr vilket blev viktiga tillskott till verksamheten i bistra tider. 🧡 Idag är det Åkulla skidallians/Åkulla Skidspår som på ett väldigt engagerat sätt utvecklar anläggningen och vi är både en stolt sponsor och fortsatt bidragsgivare. Totalt har vi satsat 11 miljoner på bland annat en ny konstsnöanläggning, låneutrustningar för barn och ungdomar, ett nytt servicehus och en sprillans ny värmestuga för allmänheten som invigs nu hösten 2021.

Allt var bättre förr, är ett klassiskt talessätt. Men så är det framförallt inte när man tänker på hur man förr i världen tog hand om de gamla, sjuka och svagaste i samhället. 1893 fanns det ett enormt behov av ett nytt äldreboende här i Varberg, ett äldreboende som Varbergs Sparbank tog initiativ till. Idag besöker vi den ljuvliga parken vid Östergårdens äldreboende. 🧡 1893 sker Varbergs Sparbanks ditintills största enskilda ekonomiska donation. Den vid den tiden storslagna summan av 35 000 kr satsades för att möjliggöra uppförandet av en ny ”Fattiggård” i Varberg. Något som verkligen behövdes för att förbättre förhållanden för de svagaste i samhället. Bidraget möjliggjorde byggnaden som vi idag känner till som äldreboendet Östergården och som togs i bruk år 1900. 💡 Begreppet ”Fattiggård” känns idag fullständigt förfärligt men så kallades förr i tiden samhällets omsorg om de gamla, svaga och sjuka som inte hade möjlighet att försörja sig själva. 💌 Underbar kuriosa är att man var så stolt över det nya äldreboendet i Varberg att man efter byggnationen kunde köpa vykort med bild på det nya Fattighuset i stadens kiosker och bokhandlare, och skicka till vänner och bekanta. Vi känner stor tacksamhet att ett tidigt initiativ till äldreomsorg fortfarande bär frukt i det moderna Varberg än idag.

Vårt älskade Torg! Med kraftiga byggnadskroppar omger Varbergs kyrka, Varbergs Stadshotell och Asia Spa och även vårt vackra Sparbankshus torget i Varberg, som är både pampigt och pittoreskt. 🧡 Att kunna stanna upp i gatubilden och vila blicken på ett konstverk är något vi idag tar för givet. I samband med Varbergs Sparbanks 100-års jubileum 1936 avsattes 25 000 kr till en fond för Torgets förskönande med syftet att utsmycka Torget. 🖼🎨1937 utlystes en tävling om vilken konstnär som skulle få äran att pryda torget med sin skulptur. Av de 68 förslag som kom in korade tillslut juryn Bror Marklund och hans Badande ungdom. Detta blev Varbergs första offentliga skulptur som än idag finns att beskåda på Torget. ⛲️ Även de två skulpturerna ”Maj” och ”Gäddleken” köptes in under 1950-talet av oss och finns idag att beskåda på ömse sidor om Sparbankshuset. Slå dig ned under de formklippta träden i sommar och njut av myllret på vårt vackra torg!

Att alla barn har rätten att få gå i skolan, oavsett vilket kön man tillhör är för oss alla idag en självklarhet. Och tur är väl det! För så har det inte alltid varit... 🧡 1873 utvecklades Flickskolans verksamhet här i Varberg. Rätten att gå i skolan för vanligt folk hade funnits sedan folkskolereformen 1842. Men även om rätten fanns så var det många föräldrar som ville hålla sina barn hemma, framförallt flickor. 🧡 Flickskolans verksamhet låg Varbergs Sparbank tidigt varmt om hjärtat. När behovet av nya lokaler påtalades 1892 gav banken ett ekonomiskt bidrag på 10 000 kr till en ny skolbyggnad. Inte mindre än 21 000 kr delades ut i stöd till byggnaden, undervisningen och stipendier runt förra sekelskiftet för att främja flickors utbildning. Den nya och ståtliga Flickskolebyggnaden invigdes år 1900. 📖 Än idag har vi ett stort engagemang och gör flera satsningar i skolan. Bland annat driver vi Skolprojektet KOLL, har kapprumsbibliotek på alla förskolor i kommunen, stipendieverksamhet till kulturskolan och ger årliga forskningsanslag till Campus Varberg.

We wake up to a large pod of Atlantic Spotted dolphins playing in our bow wake and arrive at Fort Jefferson, an abandoned fort which is now an incredible National Park at the very tip of the Florida Keys.

After we anchored in Hogsty reef for the night, after a few hours with the boat swaying wildly from side to side we sadly decide to leave the atoll, it was just too rough! Philippa catches a beautiful Mahi Mahi We anchor in total darkness without the guide of any lights in the night sky, without the moon and without any land-light and a faulty lighthouse. We get tailed by a shark as we fish in hope of catching more fish, are we on a roll? As we arrive in the Exumas in the Bahamas we weave through very shallow ground and rocks mindful of our 2.6 metre depth. As we arrive in the Exumas we discover two friends of ours that were also anchored in the same area and we set off to find them. We do a full install of our new B&G Halo 20+ Radar, Zeus 3S 9 Chartplotter, and Triton 2 Sailing Displays. Since having Sierra onboard sailing and watch keeping has become more difficult as we find our attention divided between caring for The Little Nugget and Delos. Because of this we felt the need to upgrade our radar and chart plotter to a new B & G system with more manual controls and better radar zone and AIS alarms. This force cracked the internal grid in several places and broke a portion of the grid free from hull. At some point an inspection was done, insurance was called and decisions were made.
