Rejected by 4 countries with nowhere to go, we find ourselves forced to go to deserted reefs and islands in the middle of nowhere to survive. Who would have guessed that the Caribbean has little islands that nobody has ever heard of.

Amazing whale shark swim with Sailing Zatara After Finn’s surprise return to the boat, we have 10 days to show him what he is missing. Luckily, we have Keith and Renee from Sailing Zatara to thank once more. They have invited us and many many others out on their boat for a day of swimming with whale sharks, the world’s biggest fish, along the Ningaloo reef line. Ningaloo is one of a handful of places where whale sharks appear annually and today, we really lucked out. The ocean is teeming with krill which has encouraged the whale sharks to the surface where they are happy feasting, without a care in the world and seem oblivious to us who are happily swimming alongside them. It took 6 weeks and he and his rowing partner, Phil Stubbs, won the inaugural Atlantic Rowing Race. His first taste of a blue water ocean crossing. Skip forward to 2014 and, married with three children, Rob and Rachel purchased Javelot a 43 ft Fountaine Pajot catamaran. Armed only with Rob's 3 years of racing P class yachts from the age of 11 to 13, and Rachel's non existent sailing knowledge, we set off to learn the ropes of ocean sailing. We broke stuff, replaced stuff and got to know our boat before heading offshore with the kids, Finn 18, Declan 16 and Ivan 13, in tow. Through trial and error, we have become confident wayfarers, kind of. Our plan? To sail around the world. Part of the journey will be retracing Rob’s eldest brother Kerry’s travels at sea. Using Kerry’s original letters from the 1970’s we will re trace his movements from Australia through Indonesia and South East Asia to Cambodia where Kerry’s life was cut short after straying into Cambodian waters in 1978. We have an action packed video filled with pigs, sharks, turtles, and a trip to the Thunderball Grotto! We loved our time at Staniel Cay in the Exumas. What a fun adventure location! Visiting the pigs was a highlight of our time in the Exumas. I was really surprised at how many there were, how active they were, and how few tourists were on the beach with them. I thought the water would be packed with boats and people and we would see one pig! But, there were dozens of pigs and they were motivated to beg for food. They were friendly, content, and very active. After a couple of hours with the pigs, we had to move on to adventuring in our dinghy. We explored one of the outer islands with one side facing the wild Atlantic Ocean. It was beautiful. We then went into Thunderball Grotto, the grotto made famous because of the James Bond movie, and it was a beautiful grotto, filled with tropical fish and a gorgeous dome ceiling. Then, we snorkeled with a group of resident nurse sharks. The nurse sharks live in the marina and benefit from the fish cleaning station just off the yacht club. They are great to snorkel with, not skiddish and pretty chill. We found more places to snorkel and see great things and we even had some time to fix a couple of issues on our boat. Our engine won't start, and it's not entirely clear what it is but we suspect it's the Volvo Penta MDI issues that many are experiencing, as we find out... *yes we note it's not a tragedy in the truest sense of the word, none of us were injured (and more of an alliteration on Tranquilo...). But we are very mindful of the implications if this and the snapped steering cable had happened at the same time (only a matter of weeks), or if it had happened mid-Atlantic (only two months earlier), and we had to hand steer with not the most responsive emergency tiller, potentially having to go dark with nav lights at night to save batteries. This episode see us face a horrible time with Nina coming down with a mystery illness. Doctors perform countless tests including two MRI's, X-rays, Ultrasounds and over 15 blood tests. Her blood is cultured for possible issues and also tested for Lyme disease (from Ticks) we are all tested for Covid. She is administered several types of very strong antibiotics via her intravenous drip line and while so many illnesses and issues were being discounted , its still not obvious as to the cause. Our insurance excess is huge so we must blow large amounts of money on this as she is in a private hospital . The doctors, specialists and staff are incredible and attend to Nina's' (and our own) needs with professional care and compassion. With Covid keeping so many borders closed along our intended passage home we are now faced with the very real question of whether we have to get real and pull the pin on our family adventure. A organização da Semana Internacional de Vela de Ilhabela, em parceria com a Prefeitura local, está alinhada com as autoridades de saúde para entregar um evento de alto nível de 24 a 31 de julho, no litoral norte paulista. As regatas devem reunir mais de 100 barcos de classes como ORC, RGS, Bico de Proa, Clássicos, C30 e HPE25. Para retomada das provas, os organizadores adotarão medidas restritivas e consultaram dirigentes de outras competições pelo mundo, não apenas de vela oceânica. Todas as atividades relacionadas à Semana Internacional de Vela de Ilhabela atenderão aos protocolos de segurança oficiais relacionados à COVID-19. Uma das novidades para 2021 é a exigência de teste de PCR com 72 horas de antecedência para o credenciamento, que será feito nos dias 24 e 25 de julho. Além do mais, o Yacht Club de Ilhabela (YCI) não estará aberto a convidados.

Debo confesar que ha sido uno de los veleros que mas me han sorprendido y de los mas equilibrados y bien construidos de los que me he encontrado durante toda mi carrera profesional. Un barco con claro espíritu viajero, amplias zonas de estiba, fácil maniobra, y esta unidad en particular, exceptuando el motor, todo lo demás estaba muy cuidado. En su maniobra presenta burdas, bueno, no me gusta mucho, pero es necesario ya que monta un trinquete enrollable. El molinete manual te hace ahorrar baterías. Con el ancla Rocna que monta hace que el sistema de fondeo sea excepcional. El timón colgado por popa no me apasiona por estar muy expuesto, pero el anclaje y las fijaciones estaban en perfecto estado, la hélice muy protegida. Espero poderlo probar en navegación y contaros la experiencia. De los barcos pequeños, el puma 26 para el mediterráneo, y este Vancouver para navegación de mas entidad son mis favoritos.

Vår grundtanke - Sparbanksidén - är den samma idag som när vi grundades 1836. Att uppmuntra till sparande och att genom bidrag till samhället vara en del av samhällsutvecklingen. Så var det förr, så är det nu och så kommer det också vara i framtiden. I den här serien - Sparbanken då och nu - vill vi lyfta upp några historiska insatser och avgörande bidrag från banken som gjort Varberg till den fantastiska stad som vi får leva i idag. Vi hoppas att du kanske lär dig ett och annat om Varbergs historia och om våra bidrag till bygden genom alla tider.

Bokstensmosse - en fridfull plats idag, men 1936 då skedde det en stor sensation här som gav eko ut över hela världen. Det var då man hittade Bockstensmannen i Åkullas bokskogar. 💡 Norra Hallands kulturhistoriska förening, idag Hallands kulturhistoriska museum bildades redan 1916 och disponerade då högst begränsade lokaliteter på ovanvåningen i mellersta valvet på Varbergs fästning. 🧡 Vi på Varbergs Sparbank har varit delaktig i Varbergs museums verksamhet ända sedan 1920. Då gav vi vårt första ekonomiska bidrag på 500 kr och året därpå med lika mycket. ⭐️ Än idag är vi en stark ekonomisk partner till Hallands kulturhistoriska museum och har de senaste åren gett flera bidrag för muséets fortsatta utveckling. Bland annat har vi finansierat ljussättningen till den nya utställningen om Bockstensmannen, muséets omfattande renovering 2014 och köpt in flera kulturhistoriskt intressanta konstverk och föremål som både kan studeras av forskare och visas för dig som besökare. Världens vackraste strandpromenad. Visst får man väl lite partiskt säga så som Varbergsbo? Att strandpromenaden finns här i Varberg vet de flesta om, men att den kom till helt genom ideella krafter och insamlade medel är kanske mindre känt. 💡 Initiativet till byggandet av Strandpromenaden hade kommit redan i slutet av 1800-talet men först år 1909 påbörjades arbetet med byggnationen med stadsläkaren Johan Severin Almer i spetsen. Han bildade sällskapet Varbergs Strandpromenader. Ett sällskap som hade som uppgift att anlägga en strandpromenad utmed havet mellan Kallbadhuset och Apelvikens kustsanatorium. 🧡 Redan samma år gav vi på Varbergs Sparbank vårt bidrag till byggandet av Strandpromenaden som sedan invigdes sommaren 1912. 🧡 När man sedan något år senare ville förlänga promenaden söderut ner mot stora Apelviken betalade Varbergs Sparbank hälften av markinköpet. Sammanlagt har vi bidragit med drygt 5 000 kr för skapandet av världens vackraste Strandpromenad. Tacksamma för medborgarinitiativ som skapat platser som dessa, som vi nuförtiden så självklart går våra morgon-, middag- och kvällspromenader på.
