We also sail from Compass Cay to Staniel Cay and explore the island and infamous yacht club. There is another close encounter with several sharks in very shallow water giving us up close and very personal shots of their smiles as they come menacingly close!

With expected winds up to 100 knots and high waves Hurricane Elsa was expected to run over southern Martinique. Yes, we just went out from the boatyard and now are in hurricane avoidance mode. A strong tropical wave (soon to become HURRICANE ELSA) has left the coast of Africa last week and headed straight for Martinique and St. Lucia... very unusual for the begining of July, but this is how it is. We have to decide in just 2 hours – to stay put in Martinique and risk the boat or to dodge approaching hurricane and have a not really pleasant trip. And we decided to sail down to Colombia and departed St Anne just in a few hours. Our hurricane avoiding tactic was to sail as fast as we can down south near to the Venezuelan coast to be out of the reach of Hurricane Elsa. We put two reefs on the main which still gave us 10 knots of speed, but keep us safe in coming squals, especially at night. In this conditions we’re happy to have a fast performance sailing catamaran – we should sail fast and we want to be safe. It took us 6,5 days to flee from hurricane Elsa. We had everything - wind 0-28 knots from all 360 degrees directions, enormous swell and fierce waves. We were flying, surfing, rolling, banging, shaking and had dozens of flying fish on the deck. We complete our delightful passage to Chacala with the spinnaker pulling us gently through calm seas. Despite a couple of mixups with the Captain's food orders, the sail was one of our best. Arrival in the bay, however proved to be more of a challenge, as the swell poured in and had Bohemia sideways-on in less time than it takes to say "fetch the stern anchor," which we dutifully did! Once settled, we spent a week exploring the small town and it's lush, tropical surroundings. We got some great aerial shots with the drone and made a small tour.... it was only then, when the Captain went to fetch his backpack for provisions, that the disaster began to unfold... Por isso, os organizadores orientam a equipe técnica, produção, juízes e mídia oficial a levar garrafas de água próprias para não precisar gastar garrafas plásticas. O evento também está linkado ao movimento batizado #JulhosemPlastico ou Plastic Free July. A iniciativa criada em 2011 vai de encontro aos dados alarmantes das Nações Unidas, que aponta o maior desafio do século XXI é justamente o plástico. Estudos indicam que são despejados nos mares e oceanos até 13 milhões de toneladas de plástico e menos de 10% produzido no mundo é reciclado. A couple of events from the past resurface as I fit a beautiful old Herreshoff- design bronze cleat and remake an applewood galley locker catch. The companionway steps near completion, as the finishing work continues... This is the story of the building of a Jay Benford designed, 31.8ft, junk schooner-rigged cruising sailboat.
