Our 40 year old sailboat is constantly requiring our love and attention and as soon as Soph can walk again we want to push her out of the marina and get back to adventuring. We start by servicing the engine, finding a potential oil problem in the saildrive and stitch together the forever falling apart sails. This week is exciting for Soph as she finds out whether she can start to walk again or not. We head to the hospital after visiting a diesel mechanic, who eases our worries for the saildrive. We order in a diver to scrub Nakamas bum among many other things. Hopefully this is the last of our marina work and we can now get back out there. Salve Elementos!

We say goodbye to our daughter and her boyfriend, then leave Tobermory to explore Loch Sunart. We spend a couple of nights in the Loch choosing a couple of different spots to anchor and have a night on a mooring buoy. It was very peaceful with beautiful sunshine. We have a long passage in a thick pea souper fog to Mallaig only to discover a problem with our sail drive. Doing a serious offshore race with an action ready washing machine on board may well be a refined form of Dazcat cruiser-racer chic, but Dazcat 1195 Sueños was one of only five boats to complete the new Plymouth Fastnet 500 race…Forecasts for very high and unpredictable winds saw many of the competitors retire before or soon after the start but Sueños stayed with it and was first to reach the rock, first multihull home and second overall. Rupert, possibly the most experienced multihull racer of our Dazcat owners, and crew Elliott talk to us about the race, sailing two-up, some on route solutions and how they handled conditions… Thanks to Royal Western Yacht Club and RWYC Racing for organising the event . Also to sponsors B&G, Spectra Watermakers, Trek n Eat, Crew Kit Cowes and Ullman Sails. We're looking forward to the next one! Many thanks to local musicians @Soma Soma: Saudade and to our local @Patchwork Studios

Hi Guys, In this vlog I share with you one of the best cruises I've ever had, the weather was perfect and it was so peaceful and enjoyable. I share the good and bad about boating and this video definitely highlights the good! I hope you enjoy! Kayleigh I'm Kayleigh and along with my two dogs Hugo and Coco we will full time on board our 37ft narrowboat Grayswood. After living nearly two years in our self-converted campervan we decided we needed more space. So we decided to purchase a boat after spending some time on our friend’s narrowboat. Grayswood was conveniently located less that 5 minutes from my work and was found kind of by accident. I was visiting a friend who was staying in Aston Marina and whilst we were out walking the dogs, I seen the advert for Grayswood. I said to my friend “that looks a nice boat” and as I said it the marina manager appeared and asked if we would like a look inside. Naturally we did. After looking inside the boat, we made an offer after going back for a second viewing, after some negotiations within a week she was ours pending a survey. She was hauled out the following week and the survey went well. We kept her out on the hard standing for a further six weeks whilst we renovated the insides including fitting a new kitchen and bathroom. Subscribe and welcome aboard - follow us on our narrowboat journey, where I will show what its really like living and navigating the English waterways as a solo female. New video released every Monday. Instagram - @liveaboard_lifestyle

This week our Pacific crossing continues on a little happier note, we sail through the Galapagos Islands and go for a proper swim in the ocean. After beating into it for over four days, unable to have showers, cook properly we finally reach the tradewinds and boy are we happy! Life on the ocean continues at 60 degrees to the wind, the sun comes out and we finally spot the Islands 800NM off the cost of Ecuadore, the Galapagos Islands. We lose the wind just as we approach Isla Isabela, but we don't mind, as we turn on the engine we slowly glide past the beautiful scenery. I spot jumping stingrays and egger to capture them on film, I feel like Attenborough's assistant (heh). I fail, but manage to film another highly fascinated creature with the camera... Kieran decides it's time for a real swim and jumps in the water when Merewether is still sailing. I join, a bit hesitant at first. It's cold but oh so fresh. We make a new friend, Gary the bird. He sat on the bow and hitched a ride with us for more than 300NM, day and night. One day he was just gone. Gary if you read this, we miss you and hope you and the fam is well. Feeling happy on the ocean again! We are loving life. Pacific Ocean crossing feels like a piece of cake now:) Part 4 coming up! Join our crew! After a few weeks in Horta we decided to set off sailing to explore the rest of the islands. Our final stop was ponta Delgada, one of the most eastern and last island of the Azores and 160 mile sail. Rather than do it one go, we decided to stop at Terciera and spirit the sail into two easy overnight passages. We set off and encountered some lumpy and rainy conditions. Thankfully these subsided and we spent the next few hours sailing during a beautiful sunset, encountering whales on the way! We arrived in Terciera exhausted and ready for a hot shower so called it a day and decided to explore the main city the next day. Angra do Heroismo, the oldest city in the Azores archipelago has a fascinating history which we thoroughly enjoyed learning about… and now share with you! Also sharing some sceneries from Sandy island. Thank you for watching and hope you enjoy this video! You can also follow sailing with Thomas on other platforms for almost daily updated pics and videos: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/sailingwiththomas Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/sailingwiththomas ABOUT THIS CHANNEL: I'm trying to sail around the world in my Bavaria 55 Cruiser, making videos whenever I have time for it. Most of the time I sail singlehanded but occasionally I do have sailing friends onboard. Still in the Caribbean due to Covid and was supposed to be in Asia by now. Even though this is season 3 on youtube I have already sailed 4 seasons full time but did not make that many videos in the beginning. Before full-time sailing, I have sailed several seasons in the Med prior to this, and obviously also in Scandinavia. I have been traveling the world before and also been an active regatta sailor. I had my first sailboat at age 7 and been sailing ever since. PLEASE BE KIND IN THE COMMENTS! I'm just a normal person sharing my travel adventure through my eyes and experience from my perspective! Remember how I do things might work for me but not for you. It might even not be the correct way to do things, and I don't have the blueprint either. I'm not perfect and nobody is. The day I believe I know it all and don't think I can learn new things I should go ashore.
Episode #199 : Exploring the wild end of Catalina Island Hello Friends, This episode finds Mister Steady and myself bound for the wild and roughed anchorage of Person's Landing on Catalina Island's West End. The forecast was favorable with light southerlies for several days so we decided to hit this exposed anchorage that we have never visited. Making our way through the kelp and finding a spot to set the hook in the long slow Pacific swells was pretty easy. We anchored in 20ft of water with 5 scope out and stayed on a single hook for the night. The anchorage was striking and beautiful and even if you are not a boater this campsite would be worth the trek. We will be exploring a number of new to us anchorages as we await Camille's return to Southern California, at which time we will push north up to the SF Bay area to cruise and explore. Thank you very much, you guys are amazing supporting us with your likes and comments, we really feel that we have a new family out there. Much love Carla & Simon A little bit about us... We met in the summer 2015, we were introduced to each other by the virtual world. Eighteen months later we were getting married on a beautiful beach on Barbados, bare foot, very simple ceremony just like a dream! Two days after the wedding laying on the beach, talking about sailing, Carla suggested... why don't we sail around the world? Guess what Simon said? "Let's do it" He took it with no second thoughts! And here we are, two years after that day in Barbados, we started our adventure in Croatia. We made it happen working through all the challenges on the way. Now we are enjoying this wonderful life, and what a wonderful life it is! As we travel we will cross less fortunate countries, we would love to help to build a school or a health care centre, anything that these people may need, and in our beautiful world this is taken for granted. But for these people it's a dream, or may not even be a dream. We will look around and when the opportunity to help comes we will put our hands and hearts in to it.
We FINALLY got to doing our galley countertop makeover - and the vanity tops in the heads, but will show those in another video. Its been a long road with a lot of indecision with regards to what material we would finally use. Corian had always been the plan, but at this stage of the project, the costs involved just didn't seem possible or justifiable. After a lot of research into options, we decided to go with bamboo. Its an ecofriendly option made from a sustainable source and really light weight - each 1.2m x 2.4m board weighing only 10kg! I had my reservations - was it going to look ok mixing bamboo with teak? - was it going to make the interior seem dark? - and too "woody"? - would it hold up to the marine environment? We got an enormous amount of info from Bamboo Warehouse, here in Cape Town. They assured us that their product had already been installed on a few super yachts here in Cape Town, and that with the right sealing of the surface, it would be hard wearing and definitely suitable for our project. as a bonus, all their bamboo is from sustainable sources, totally ecofriendly and in the long term an easily renewable material. We have come to realise that there is very little that is ecofriendly when it comes to building boats so this appeased our eco-conscience a little. We were taking a bit of a risk going with the 5mm boards because they are not cross-bonded like the thicker laminates and therefore fragile. We wanted to keep weight to a minimum, were putting these boards over existing 9mm marine ply surfaces so did not need to go with "strong" boards and keeping the cost down was an added bonus - so decided to go with the 5mm board and work carefully. The project did not start out well ☹. After explaining to the courier company responsible for transporting our boards up from Cape Town, just how fragile the boards were, and getting reassurances that it would all be fine, 2 of the 3 boards arrived here broken. After a couple of phone calls the courier company reimbursed us for some of the damage when we agreed to have them leave the damaged boards with us. They said that they would not be prepared to collect new boards from Cape Town for us and we just wanted to get on with the job! Robin went back to the drawing board and worked out a new cutting schedule that worked well and we still managed to cut what we needed out of the remaining pieces of boards - AND even managed to get our head vanity tops and cabinet doors out of what was left!! The project took longer than we had envisaged - surprise, surprise😆 - the prep work took a while because of all the re-planning, once fitted, cutting the edges back and then all the detailing and finally the very slow varnishing process meant that the project took the better part of 3 weeks from start to total finish. What can I say - we are slow - but meticulous 😉 We had planned on a total of 4 coats of polyurethane varnish in a low sheen - matt finish - not sure what this companies idea of "matt" is but we have ended up with pretty glossy tops that I'm hoping might dull down in time. Could possibly have something to do with the fact that I eventually put on 6 coats, partly because at the half way mark I changed from the "low sheen" varnish to the "matt" and I was just never happy with the surface of each coat. Varnishing in a pretty dusty environment with added cat hair in the air, is not conducive to glassy smooth varnish finish. So we eventually decided it wasn't going to get any better and we would live with what we had. So we are now complete and happy with the finished product and its just so good to have a pretty, functional and 99% completed galley!! Now onto the next project......
