Welcome to the Ocean Cruisers Podcast, hosted by Andy H This week we are speaking to Dylan Magaster, Founder of the tiny homes Youtube channel Florb and Dylan Magaster Sailing Dylan started travelling the world as soon as he possibly could, he took off to South America to start exploring and searching for alternative means to earn a living. He started his adventures by travelling the world in a van and video documenting the experiences of people who self built tiny houses which became the popular YouTube channel, FLORB. Ready for the next stage of his journey, Dylan decided the best means for him to see as much as possible was to travel by sailboat. So he bought a 1979 Morgan 382 in Spain after completing a one week sailing course. He now has travelled over 6000 nautical miles through the Mediterranean and is currently cruising the Greek Islands You can learn more and follow Dylans journey on his YouTube sailing channel, Dylan Magaster Sailing Follow us on Instagram, Facebook and download the podcast on Apple Podcasts and Spotify. Our footage onboard " Carry on," during Hurricane Nora in the Pacific 2021. We advise of some some basic hints and tips on how to survive and hopefully escape unharmed. From broken boats to broken bodies, the fourth stage of the SailGP season started in explosive fashion as the teams prepared for the mid season event. And while conditions did settle down for the racing, success was even harder to grasp and emotions started to boil over. Aarhus had it all.
Welcome to the first video in our new Atlantic crossing series! Back in 2019, we crossed the Atlantic for the first time, from Europe to the Caribbean. This year, we crossed the Atlantic back to Europe, and we will be closing the loop at the end of the year with a 3rd transatlantic. In this video, we share with you how we equipped Polar Seal, our Beneteau Oceanis 40 from 2007, for this particular type of sailing. We go through sails, rigging, self-steering, power systems, and the few details that have made life offshore a lot more comfortable. Finally, I give my thoughts on "ocean-going blue water sailboats" and what we think about taking our boats for very long offshore passages. Chapters: 00:01 - The oceans we've crossed 01:45 - Our ideal sails wardrobe & setup 04:24 - Rigging tips 06:23 - One absolute ocean sailing must-have 08:00 - Powering the boat offshore 09:34 - I would personally not cross oceans without this ;) 09:55 - To never navigate in the dark 10:50 - Disconnecting is good. But not *too* much. 13:00 - I'm a creature comfort. 14:07 - our thoughts on "blue water ocean-going sailboats" ⚡ Get 10% OFF Dakota Lithium batteries with code RYANANDSOPHIE sitewide, on all orders at: https://bit.ly/43C4ulL ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ** GEAR WE USE ** ⛵️Our boat: Polar Seal, 2007 Beneteau Oceanis 40, owners version (2 cabins layout). Cape Cod Canal, here we come, seasickness and fog won't stop us! Since running aground Jake has yet to go sailing; this week he starts the long process of learning to enjoy sailing again. Flashback to June for Pride month, and we sail to Provincetown Massachusetts to celebrate this joyous time of year, but not without struggles, Jake getting seasick. After a seemingly never-ending list of projects, we jump back to show you what was happening around the projects, and when we sailed to Provincetown with Captain Tom on his Moody 46. The short passage was off to a foggy and cold start, and to add insult to injury, Jake gets seasick for the second time in his life. But, it doesn't last long and everyone gets to enjoy a relaxing passage through the foggy Cape Cod Canal. It ends up being a relaxing, and typical, sail through New England, to Provincetown. Come back next week as we explore P-town in the hopes of finding venues for our wedding! *re uploaded due to a technical error we discovered* Don’t forget to subscribe! You may have noted that we’ve been a little off the grid lately, and we explain in this episode why that is the case… In reality, we were having a sailors crisis… 😂 Well, not so much a crisis as a “what the hell do we do with ourselves now?” After hitting our goal of sailing the Atlantic. We thought of many places to go and routes to get there and none of them seemed to sit right with us. Meanwhile, during our indecisiveness, the time on our Schengen visa has been counting down and we were running out of time to stay in Europe. So we came up with a solution to hold the countdown on our visa while we muddled through our future plans. The solution? A trip to the UK to visit family! With cheap flights however, come budget travel experiences and you might have a few laughs at our expense as we sleep on floors, get caught on wrong roads in a country that’s somewhat new to Adam, and eventually make our way home to visit family who we haven’t seen for years! At the end of the episode, Adam shares that during our travel decision, he actually contacted the founder and CEO of Kraken Yachts, the most bluewater yacht we’ve seen on the market today. The story of this yacht will slowly unfold in the coming episodes, so stay tuned! * As the UK is a minefield for drone flying, we opted to use Storyblocks to get some drone footage of UK in this episode! Apart from WILHELMINA's remarkable fuel economy numbers (see below), this Nigel Irens "LDL" launch of course displays his instantly recognisable styling, making the whole a most attractive, unique, and low carbon footprint offering. https://www.sandemanyachtcompany.co.uk/yacht/615/WILHELMINA She has proven a much loved family day and weekend #cruiser, exploring the coast and coves of Devon, and would be equally at home as a super efficient and striking #superyacht #tender. WILHELMINA was conceived as a test vessel to further Nigel Irens's ongoing development of the 'LDL' (Low Displacement / Length ratio) hull form, based on the simple premise: "how much power do you really need?"... The timber-built WILHELMINA has demonstrated LDL's advantages by undertaking a number of long-range passages. A recently completed 94 nautical mile passage from Cowes, Isle of Wight, to Dartmouth, Devon, was accomplished at an average speed of 11 knots (benefitting from an average one knot fair tide). Fuel burned amounted to only 37 Litres - so 0.4 Litres per mile. WILHELMINA is eminently suitable for re-powering with a battery-powered electric motor. Drone footage licensed by: https://www.highexposure.com.au ----------------- ABOUT US: We are a family of five sailing around the world on a performance catamaran named "Archer" and sharing our adventures in family-friendly episodes every Tuesday! OUR ROUTE: We departed the Boston area of the United States and sailed south to the Caribbean and then west through the Panama Canal. We have dealt with massive repairs in the South Pacific, the Coronavirus lock down in New Zealand, a Category 5 Cyclone in Fiji, and now we are cruising in Australia. OUR PAST: You may remember us as "SV Honeymoon?" Ten years ago ("before kids"), we sailed a Lagoon 380 named Honeymoon halfway around the world to Sydney, Australia. Along the way we shared our experiences via YouTube and, by happenstance, created one of the very first "sailing channels." We also realized what an incredible experience we were having and that someday we wanted to do it again, only this time with kids. FAQ: More questions? Check out our Frequently Asked Questions page on our website or answers to many of your questions in this 40 minute episode: https://www.the-sailing-family.com/faq https://youtu.be/jBzTUVZ5oG4 PLEASE COMMENT!: As a channel with kids on-board, we are required to actively monitor all comments, but we still want to hear from you. The theme for our Summer 2021 Photo & Video Contest was "Breaking Free" - submissions highlighted the idea of freedom and escape provided by the Sabre boating lifestyle, and the results speak for themselves. The judge for this contest was Sabre's Purchasing Manager, who had the following to say about her selections: VIDEO WINNER: For me, this video is about sharing appreciation for the beauty in passing moments. The sun slipping away in the last moments of the golden hour and the glow moving across the water are fleeting moments we can stop and appreciate; those little things that, when we take the time to really notice them, bring out gratitude and happiness in each of us. PHOTO WINNER: This is a lovely shot of the sort of location I imagine when I think of Sabre owners cruising around the world and finding hidden gems in nature. The photo itself has excellent composition, showing off the clean lines of the yacht along beside the graceful, natural curves of the falls. What a lovely view. I am always happy to see our owners taking in the sights and sounds in locations like these, so thank you so much for sharing! Today I hitched a ride on one of the TowBoatUS boats to do a couple pick ups and drop offs near the coast of San Diego California. The first was to a nearly one thousand foot long oil tanker to drop off a technician and some gear. Got to work on my bowlines as we hoisted his gear up the side of the massive ship. Learn your knots folks! The second stop was to a cruise ship called Ruby Princess. We were taking a crew member back home for his holiday leave and delivering some Covid 19 tests that would be headed to the hospital once ashore. It was eerie to pull up to basically a gigantic ghost ship with no passengers that has orders just to drift until further notice. Overall another successful and exciting day boating in San Diego. You never know what you will get yourself into ON THE DOCKS.. Thanks for watching!
