Snow Gum took us from Scotland’s Western Isles south to Bangor in Northern Island. We had a real mix of wind conditions, from comfortable sailing on a reach, a broad reach and close hauled, through to flat calm and motoring. We had lots of dolphins jostling for position in front of the bow, with some turning sideways to look up at us from just below the surface. The sunrise when we were between Rathlin Island, Islay and the Mull of Kintyre was beautiful. We’d planned to wait there for the tide to turn, but the wind picked up and we set sail through the North Channel. It was slow going until the tide turned to our favour and we made it to Bangor earlier than we’d calculated. Bangor is a great town for refilling a boat’s storage compartments with food. 🙂

Her LOA is 19.3m and she has a beam of 4.6m with a draft of 2.98m She weighs 33t and she can cruise at 7 kts with the engine and 8-10 kts on sail depending on the wind. She is fairly comfortable with 15 to 20 kts of wind. Freshwater capacity to last over 2 weeks and a fuel range of 13 days steaming. About the Boat ''SY Red Current'' is a Southerly 31 with the construction of GRP and rigged as a sloop with Aluminium Mast. Her LOA is 31 feet and she has a beam of 10 feet with a draft of 7 feet. She also has an electric swing keel which makes her draft very shallow and easy to enter in shallow water. In this weeks episode we do little sailing and plenty hiking! We continue our adventure on the Isle of Arran. Do you think going for a 6 hour hike with three dogs and a kid is a good idea? Well, we did! The Isle of Arran is an island off the west coast of Scotland. It is the largest island in the Firth of Clyde and the seventh largest Scottish island, at 432 square kilometres. Goat Fell is the highest point on the Isle of Arran. At 874 metres, it is one of four Corbetts on the island. The mountain, along with nearby Brodick Castle, is now owned by the National Trust for Scotland. If you're planning on visiting Arran and climbing Goatfell, keep in mind that the mountain stands sentinel above Brodick Castle and reaching the summit takes between 2 and 5 hours, so pack plenty of supplies and make sure you are properly equipped. It took us over 6 hours! If you visit Arran and climb Goatfell, don't forget to visit the souvenir shop on your way back and grab a tub of the famous Arran ice cream.. you won't regret it! Who are we? We are a family of three with three dogs, sailing the coasts of Scotland, exploring one island at a time – for now! There is no set route or plan. We will go where the wind and life take us. We have two golden retrievers and a bernese mountain dog – Hachi, Luna and Meems who sail with us.
