Rebecca Childress and Michael Hayward set sail for a 700 mile ocean passage between St Helena Island and Ascension Island, spend a week at anchor there, and then prepare to sail across the Atlantic Ocean to the Caribbean. They have no relationship issues between the two ocean islands, primarily because there is no way out from Ascension Island, and enjoy the island. Both parties MUST get along well, and keep themselves, eachother and the boat safe in order to keep sailing around the world! We take a tour of the island, and do some hiking on Green Mountain while learning a little bit about the flora and fauna, and the history of Ascension Island. The safety is concluded with a Vaccination while we are there. Then we head out to sea for a 25 + day passage across the Atantic. Rebecca will be looking for crew from Greneda in the Caribbean starting in November, to help her complete her circumnavigation. She has been sailing around the world for nearly 15 years now, and she will sail cross her outbound tracks in the Bahamas or anywhere on the east coast of the USA. Crew should be experienced ocean sailors, be ready to share all expenses, and be prepared to get themselves to and from the boat. There's nothing like busting out the grinder to bust through a big project. We decided to make the leap to LiFePO4 batteries and they needed a place to go. Last summer Jade finished the fairing and painting of the bilge solo - with the exception of the battery areas because too many heavy batteries were in the way. Taking the batteries out for the big switch provided the perfect opportunity to finish what we started last summer. We armed ourselves with grinders, epoxy, squeegees, and this time around - gel coat. And then we got it done! ANNAPOLIS BOAT SHOW! This force cracked the internal grid in several places and broke a portion of the grid free from hull. At some point an inspection was done, insurance was called and decisions were made. This week we set sail from the Percy Island A-frame at around 3am and about an hour into the trip something seemed terribly wrong. With water splashing all around us the sinking feeling that we had hit rocks was quickly replaced with the shocking realisation that we must have woken a sleeping whale. A minor speed bump in the grand plan as we are on a mission to find some internet to catch up on our uni work. We finally have some luck with the fish and get a little tuna and a lovely mackerel for fresh fish and chips for dinner, among other things. We hope you enjoy this weeks episode.
