► Départ de la 36ème édition de l’ARC - 31 multicoques au départ de Las Palmas, cap sur Sainte-Lucie. ► 900 participants de 38 nationalités différentes ont pris le dimanche 21 novembre le départ de l’Atlantic Rally for Cruisers. Devant leurs étraves, 2 700 milles pour traverser l’Atlantique et rejoindre Sainte-Lucie. Les 31 multicoques étaient les premiers à partir après le coup de canon libérateur ; comme les 110 monocoques après eux, ils ont dû tirer des bords pour franchir la ligne et gagner le sud de l’île de Gran Canaria. Un vent inhabituel de sud-est de 10 à 15 noeuds avait en effet débouté le classique alizé de nord-est. C’est d’ailleurs une météo très calme qui attend les concurrents – le plupart devrait toutefois boucler le parcours en 18 à 20 jours. Parmi la flotte de multicoques, on a retrouvé d’anciens vainqueurs de l’épreuve comme le TS42 Banzaï, le TS5 Guyader Saveol et le NEEL 47 Minimole. Nos contributeurs Brieuc Maisonneuve et Maxence Valdelièvre, respectivement à bord du TS5 Addictive Sailing et du Class 6 One Cat ont affiché un bon potentiel de vitesse – Brieuc est à priori le seul skipper de multicoque à tenter une route nord pour attraper une dépression… et donc du vent, peut-être même beaucoup... Lors du briefing des skippers, le météorologue Chris Tibbs a en effet conseillé aux voiliers de se diriger vers le sud en suivant la côte africaine jusqu'à la latitude du Cap-Vert avant de pointer leurs étraves vers l'ouest vers Sainte-Lucie. Au final, ce sont 208 voiliers qui traversent l’Atlantique puisque les 67 concurrents de l’ARC + ont quitté Mindelo au Cap-Vert, pour leur seconde étape de leur traversée vendredi 19 novembre dernier, à destination de Grenade. 60 autres voiliers rejoindront la première édition de l'ARC en janvier prochain, prenant le départ pour la première fois d'un troisième rallye de traversée de l'Atlantique organisé par le World Cruising Club. We took off out of Ft Lauderdale, and checked in at Bimini Bahama. We had some trouble with getting everyone approved for the health visa, but other than that we had a lovely time. Lots of fishing, swimming with stingrays, service, and lots of smiles.

In this episode you find us in the middle of the ocean about a third of the way from New Caledonia to New Zealand. We have our good friend Neville on board who brings plenty of laughs and we are racing to beat the next low pressure system to New Zealand. The low pressure systems come across the Tasman about once a week and usually sit below 30 degrees South giving sailors time to hove-to if need be, or press on swiftly to the safety of land depending on the size and speed of the system. This passage is filled with a mix of motoring, variable winds, and some consistent and building wind as we get to the top of North Cape.
