Great Race returns A diverse and competitive fleet will chase history in the 2021 Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race, headlined by the battle for the Tattersall Cup and the introduction of the Two-Handed Division. For the 2021 Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race, six Australian states and territories are represented in the fleet of 106 boats (NSW, Tasmania, Victoria, Queensland, South Australia and ACT), along with three international entries (Black Jack – Monaco; Maverick 49 – Guernsey; SHK Scallywag 100 – Hong Kong). Matt Allen’s Botin 52 Ichi Ban is hoping to become only the third boat to win the Tattersall Cup (awarded to the overall winner on handicap) three times, having won the 2017 and 2019 editions of the race. Simon Kurts’ S&S 47 Love & War is one of the two boats on that elite list (Freya is the other) and will be one to watch if the breeze is strong and blowing from different directions. Speaking at the Official Media Launch for the 2021 Rolex Sydney Hobart, Allen said “We have a chance of going back-to-back, but we will put that out of our minds - we're pretty superstitious! "You need all the moons to align [to win the Tattersall Cup]. You need a terrific boat, a terrific crew, but you also need luck down Storm Bay and the Derwent River." “We are delighted to see such a strong fleet for the return of this Great Race,” said Noel Cornish AM, Commodore of the race organiser, Cruising Yacht Club of Australia. “Planning for the race has been a truly collaborative effort as we adapt to the COVID-19 pandemic, ensuring we can conduct the race in compliance with any restrictions outlined by the NSW and Tasmanian State Governments. This clip was from over six months ago, taken by a friend, of my second sail on the Chat 18. Winds were light and I was still getting used to the boat, so maneuvers were not elegant. The fake window paint was a disaster! Now fixed!! And we now have a bigger roller furling genoa to replace the original 40 year old beach cat jib. The mainsail is still from the 1970s though! We often joke that an ocean crossing starts when you reach halfway. But the truth is, that passed the excitement of the first days, a long offshore passage can sometimes be a lot more mentally challenging than one would think... There is a myriad of reasons why an ocean crossing is a hard thing to do and not a lot of people do it. First off, you need a boat, a few sailing skills, and lots of time on your hands to get ready. The list of what needs to be prepared, purchased, fixed, double-checked, serviced and triple-checked is massive. The equipment needed to cross an ocean crossing comfortably and safely can also be daunting, and cost-prohibitive. Ryan and I estimated that we spent approximately 10 000$ to buy our offshore sailing kit. That includes satellite communications, an extensive medical kit, spare parts, better sails, extra jerricans of fuel… the list is long and adds up quickly. Getting to the starting point of an ocean crossing is an endeavor, and while we often tell ourselves that the preparation is the hardest part of a crossing, challenges do not stop once you’ve untied the lines. One aspect of crossing oceans that is a lot less discussed but not least challenging is how mentally overwhelming life onboard can be after a while. It's Indian Summer in Switzerland. I brought the sunshine with me from Cape Verde it seems. I go from one check and test at the hospital. Consultation with the surgeon, CT scan and check up with a nurse and with the anesthesiologist. Everything looks good and I am ready to be operated in a couple of weeks. I can just wait and enjoy the beauty of my Switzerland. Foram dois dias de muita emoção com chuva, sol, diversas atividades como: Slackline, balance, futebol de mesa e é claro o principal MUITO SURF !!!! 🏄‍♂️ Parabéns a todos os competidores, futuros campeões, a todos que ajudaram de alguma forma este evento acontecer... sem dúvida esse dia ficou marcado na história da Praia Mole.
