Dans l’épisode précédent, nous avions jeté l’ancre à Es Calo, probablement l’un des plus beaux mouillages de l’Ile de Formentera et plutôt bien abrité. Mathieu et Océane s’en donnent à coeur joie dans l’eau à 31°. Nous en profitons pour découvrir le petit village avec les enfants, refaire quelques courses avant d’aborder notre navigation vers le Sud de l’Espagne. Es Calo, nous fait penser étrangement à des décors du film le Grand Bleu. Des petites cabanes de pêcheurs avec les mises à l’eau en bois pour les bateaux, les enfants qui jouent et font leurs concours de plongeons à partir du seul petit débarcardère du village. Il y règne une atmosphère vraiment reposante et nous regrettons de ne pas pouvoir y passer quelques jours supplémentaires pour goûter un peu plus au charme naturel du coin. Mais, nous devons prendre la fenêtre météo pour descendre sur Malaga où nous devons retrouver Lisa et Emma qui viennent nous rejoindre pour leurs vacances. Une occasion de se réhabituer à la vie au large qui n'est pas s'en rappeler quelques souvenirs mouvementés à Lynne. Finalement, nous arrivons à Malaga après 67h de navigation, dont 44h de voile. I don’t know which I love more …. Being in Japan or being part of the sailing community … yesterday morning I threw the lines at Dejima to begin to make my way to Goto when I discovered my shifter would not budge. I was able to secure the boat and immediately phoned my go to guy for things mechanical … Anthony … with his guidance I began to eliminate possible causes ( something caught in the prop, gearbox oil etc) and finally determined the problem was in the shifter. But I could not get the shifter apart and was growing frustrated. The marina mechanic said he could not come to take a look until February …. I told Tony that I may put an appeal out for help on this group ( sailing in Japan) when I bumped into Jin! I had met him once before … he is a builder of reed boats … and completed two ocean passages in them ( Pacific and Atlantic ) and now preparing his 30 foot Yamaha for a solo crossing to California this year. He immediately came to my boat and brought tools … but after two hours we could not get it apart … so he phoned a guy, who phoned a guy who phoned a guy who said he would be there in 30 minutes. He not only came but the other guys arrived too and by the evening my shifter was fixed! I tried to pay but they refused. They said they were helping a fellow seaman! This morning I left with no problems !!!! Karen lubed the Max Prop with Lubriplate No. 130-AA multi-purpose calcium type grease. Props like winches need lubing. As we like to say, “Older sailors don't have a clew when to quit; they just keep lubing their winches.” Even though we prefer the natural look of the prop, we used antifouling paint to protect the feathering blades from corrosion and barnacles. Soaped up the dinghy which was begging to be washed. Last time we did a deck tour. This time Steve takes us down below for a tour of our home improvements thus far and of course…we did some dancing. This was a really scary time! after I split my hull open on the passage from ruins point to Musgrave I didn't end up realising what had happened until I started heading back to 1770. the split happened on the previous passage when it was blowing 25KTS PLUS! I FELT ABIT SILLY THAT I DIDN'T REALISE IT HAD HAPPENED UNTILL LATER... luckily nothing truly life threatening happened and the split did not continue + it as above the water line.. but if it had it kept splitting and was close to the water line it would have been a much different situation! I loved creating the music for this video and truly enjoy adding that element of creating to my videos. the free diving in the episode was some of the greatest diving I had ever done and just felt so blesses by the magic that was underneath the surface. the creatures down there as just on another level and I would highly recommend to anyone on the easy coast of Australia to check out lady Musgrave when you get the chance! it really means the world to me if you would subscribe as I pour 5 days of my week into these videos and creating all the music for them swell which take another 2 days to create and they are completely free for you to watch. so as a means of showing your appreciating sharing the videos with your friends and commenting on the videos your thoughts or past experiences means the world! I wrote this song when our daughter was born. Now, 30 years later, when she is getting a baby herself, it's finished with a stop motion video! We were so happy with her, and a few weeks after she was born, I woke up in the middle of the night with this song in my head, including lyrics. But it took me 30 years before I recorded it and made this video! The whole video is composed of a few thousand pictures. It is far from perfect, but at a given moment you just have to stop, especially because our daughter was VERY pregnant at the moment I uploaded this video, and I wanted to give it to her as a present before their child is born :-) The song is recorded on a laptop and with a Rode USB studio microphone. You don't need lots of money and stuff to get a good (I think) result. The song was made and mixed out with Acoustica Mixcraft 7 software, and the video was edited with Davinci Resolve 17. The stop motion video has been done with a Canon 70D with a Canon 10-18mm lens, on a cheapo tripod, and connected to my laptop, remotely controlled with free Canon software: EOS Utility 2. For shooting the photos for this video I would have loved to use qStopmotion, a special and open source stopmotion software, but it only worked at very low resolution with my camera. We were pumped to be in Beaufort for the Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament. Sure, we wished we had not been hit by lightning that blew out some of our instruments, but deep down, we had wanted to stay for the tournament. The downside was that we needed to get approval from our insurance company because we were not going to get north of the 36th parallel by 15 June. Other than that hiccup, we needed to wait out the repairs and they were close to completion. BUT, they would not be done before the start of Big Rock. Also, due to crazy weather, we had not been able to visit Cape Lookout or Shackleford Banks so when Susannah and Jess came back to town and invited us to Cape Lookout for the day and then to the first day weigh in at Big Rock, we were all in! The town was hopping with energy. Dozens of $10M yachts pulled gracefully into the marina with crew enjoying a few drinks and the festivities before putting on the game face and preparing for the start of the big event. Big Rock is one of the largest big bill fishing tournaments on the East Coast and has one of the biggest purses. The entry fee is a hefty $2500 to 20k, but the potential winnings are close to $5M. We also happened to be at weigh in when Catch 23, Michael Jordan's boat arrived with a 25 pound dolphin. It was an amazing day getting to experience Cape Lookout and Big Rock all at once. The waters were churning from almost 270 yachts returning to the town for weigh in. To top off the evening, we hosted Brown's little sis from college, Jane and her husband, Tom on our boat. We christened the grill and made killer burgers for dinner. We set sail for George Town, Bahamas to explore the area and dig into cruiser life with the kids. The RMYC Sailing School was present in full force in Mellieħa at the annual Euromed International Regatta, sponsored by Mapfre and supported by Yachting Malta. Stars of the show were Jacob Carl Delia, who finished in third place in the Optimist Beginners’ Class. Jacob won four of the eleven races won, which was very positive considering his lack of experience when compared to the other sailors. In the ILCA Class 6 Dimitris Vertsonis also took third place. On the first day mast damage forced him to retire but made up for it on the second day when he won all four races. In ILCA Class 4, RMYC Ladies Lara Merten and Sophie Vilette finished the Regatta as first and third female respectively. Thank you Malta Young Sailors Club for hosting us!

In this weeks episode, we continue our journey with over half of the Erie Barge Canal behind us. After a busy day of locking and, of course, lots of snacks, we arrive in Little Falls, NY and decide to stay an extra day to enjoy a bit of stillness. Little Falls, NY is a very scenic and historic town surrounded by the Adirondack Mountains.
