In this episode (S2-E59) of the Art of Boat Building, boatbuilder Bob Emser shows how he cast the Pintle and Gudgeon for the Haven 12 1/2. The plans for the boat drawn by Joel White the boats designer, give us all the information we need to design patterns to cast the silicon bronze hardware. In addition we go to Bob's friend, Steve Colburn's, house to have the final part machined on his metal lathe. All of the finished parts are fitted on the boat rudder which is lofted from the line plan. They all come together in the end to dry fit all of the parts. “If you’re going to make it, make it beautiful.” -Bob Emser- Want to work with me building your boat? Have a look at this Etap 38i lying in Port Ginesta Barcelona Spain. This is a lovely example of a fast modern cruising yacht. She was built and first commissioned in 1990 Some of the design features are unique Etap yachts. Most certainly this is a modern good-looking yacht that has stood the test of time. Indeed, many of her features are still current today and can still be found on many new quality production yachts of this size. length overall 11.57 meters beam 3.86 meters draft 1.7 meters She has a wing keel and displacement of 6500 kilos. An adjustable backstay is nicely positioned and easily accessible from the helm It’s nice to see the mainsheet with the traveler car in the cockpit. if you enjoy getting performance sail control in my opinion a well-positioned mainsheet track such as this one in the air tap 381 is essential. She also has a fully battened mainsail That will drop neatly into the lazy bag system. A nice feature is the raised toe-rail, this won't trap water but will be very effective in stopping things sliding overboard when you're sailing An extra-deep starboard cockpit locker will easily accommodate an inflatable dinghy, mooring lines, warps, and fenders. Life raft stowage under the aft cockpit seat Is a simple yet clever design feature from Etap. A study looking windlass with chain and warp gipsy is in a good size anchor locker making easy access to the chain. The spinnaker pole is nicely tucked away at the front of the Seldon mast The gas-rod kicker will support the boom even when the topping lift is detached. She also has a lazy bag mainsail system making easy work of stowing the main quickly when you are on the move. The yacht is powered by a 28 Hp Volvo Penta 2003 engine on a sail drive. She benefits from closed-circuit water cooling- Below the deck, we find a delightful space having a unique galley setup. positioning the sink centrally freeze up access to the saloon on both sides of the saloon dining table. Considering her age, the interior of this particular yacht is in exceptional condition. The light oak finish sets her off well. it's something one might find used more frequently today. The light oak certainly adds a wow factor that greets you as you descend from the cockpit. The Etap 38 has a well-equipped chart and navigation center, a pleasure to work at in this light airy space. Moving starboard aft is the head's compartment. A Feature that many sailors complain to is missing on modern cruising is a real wet gear hanging space. what a great feature that is! Portside aft is a good size double cabin the galley has a 3 burner gas hob and oven, a fridge with freezer compartment, and plenty of storage behind 4 pots and pans In the forward cabin, it's unusual to find a sink tucked in the starboard corner on any size of yacht.

Having a feel of the life on Union Island
Welcome to this weeks video! There’s a lot happening this week…. We leave Bocas del Toro and start heading towards Linton Bay with a small pit stop at Zapatillas Island. What starts off as a beautiful sail soon turns vicious when in the middle of the night we get hit with a super powerful squall. As the wind keeps increasing, our sailboat struggles and so do we. We see the wind reach 50 knots and we do our best to hold on and keep reefing. Everything happens so fast! We definitely weren’t expecting such a poor crossing and to make matters worse we realize that both of our sails are shredded. With torn and broken sails we limp our way to safety….Linton bay. Mother Nature wins yet again! Now it’s time to take a look at the damage and start on repairs! Hope you enjoy the video! We find ourselves 2 days away from The Big Left Turn: leaving the Pacific Northwest to sail down the coast of the United States in our first offshore passage. And nothing (nothing) goes to plan.
In this video we demonstrate how to raise / lower the mast on an F-82R trimaran. Similar techniques would apply to any Corsair / Farrier design. We talk with Multihull Central's skipper Brett Hodder about sail trim on a cruising catamaran for up-wind and down-wind sailing (without extra sails) to get some tips about how to improve performance whether its for racing or just getting to your destination faster. This was shot during the @SeawindCatamarans annual Pittwater Regatta. APPOLOGIES for the poor audio quality in the wind but it was starting to get gusty! See more info at www.multihullcentral.com

EP 198: The Smallest Island Ever... | Sailing the Caribbean We said goodbye to Carriacou and headed off to Petit Martinique and Petit St Vincent while we waited for our documentation to get approved by St Vincent and the Grenadines before we head off to Union Island. We got to exploring and diving the last bit of "Grenada" before we journey up north. We stopped at this tiny little island in the middle of the passage from Petit Martinique to Union Island. It was awesome and the diving was like being a giant aquarium. Then we got the call it was time to check into a new country. Like Ricky says.. another day another anchorage Thanks for watching! We've had lots of boat guests over the last 8 years on board our first boat, a Leopard 48 named Ru-ach and of course our new boat, Wind Therapy, a Leopard 45 sailing catamaran. We love having guests and sharing this cruising experience with them. Most of our guests have come during our chartering years. We all went together and chartered a boat, shared the expenses, the cleaning, the cooking, and sometimes the sailing. Over the last 15 months, our guest have been on Wind Therapy. It's very different having guests on a boat that you all chartered together and having guests in your floating home. There are rules and guidelines that need to be followed so everyone is safe, has a good time, and we all remain great friends at the end of their trip. In this episode, we point out some of the most important rules for being a guest on our boat. Don't worry. If you don't obey them to a T, we won't make you walk the plank. But we can't speak for other pirates. If you find you've been invited to be a guest on someone else's boat, ask for their rules. We're sure they have them. So, be a good boat guest, and ensure you get that 2nd invitation aboard someone's boat. Thanks for watching, and don't forget to subscribe and hit the notification bell so you know when we upload a new video. Thanks again to Damon Fowler for composing and performing our awesome theme song!
We're up to the CHALLENGE - Tackling BOAT WORK Before SAILING to Harbors Unknown Ep. 55 Everywhere we turn we face challenges. Your success is determined by how you respond and how you overcome that adversity, ultimately leading to growth. So while we’re not happy to have birds constantly pooing on the boat, it’s a reminder that we need to get going. So this week we're tackling a few boat projects before sailing our Seawind 1600 catamaran off to Harbors Unknown. If you're new here, Harbors Unknown is the story of two dreamers, Kristin and Fabio Potenti, and our French Bulldog dog Yoda. We sold our home at the beginning of the pandemic (May 27th, 2020) and moved aboard our Seawind Catamarans boat, Wanderlust, in September, 2020. We're sailing her to Harbors Unknown, to explore the world’s vast cultures through food, a common thread amongst people everywhere. Connecting with people and places through the local cuisine, and showing how those dishes can be cooked on a boat with limited space and resources. We're sharing our adventures as a sailing couple living on a boat and how it’s possible to live an alternative lifestyle that provides freedom and fulfillment. We have set off on our voyage sailing around the world, after exploring the beautiful waters of South Florida, the Florida Keys, and the Bahamas. After a week in Cape May where we fixed our wind instruments, got our first vax, cleaned the boat, and rested, we were ready to move North. But, we preferred to make day hops on our journey to NYC vs. one overnight so we planned a stop in Atlantic City and then in Barnegat Inlet. Ironically, as we were passing Atlantic City and the winds were behind us and the seas were calm, we opted to bypass Atlantic City and make a beeline for Sandy Hook; this is the staging ground for sailing into NYC. But, as we were passing Atlantic City, our port engine started to shake and we didn't know what was happening, so we opted to drop anchor in AC and check it out in the morning. The anchorage in AC was horrible. It was unprotected and every motorboat coming out of the marina drove past us at breakneck speed, creating a constant tsunami in their wake, sending all of our items flying off the counter and shattering on the floor. Needless to say, we were ready to leave as soon as possible. Due to current, we didn't get any sleep as our boat swung 180 degrees and the stern was almost in the shipping channel, the one that has NAVY and cargo ships passing through it all night. It was unnerving. Additionally, we forgot to lock the rudder so the boat was swinging and banging and doing all sorts of things that after locking the rudder, it stopped. The next morning, Brown dove the prop and it was clear. We did some other tests and felt confident that we must have propped it and lost the rope or bag on the way into AC. We were free to go! He finished his caulking job and we took off for Barnegat Inlet. Little did we know what we would encounter entering and leaving! We later learned it to be the most dangerous inlet on the East Coast and we can see why. It's rough with waves and currents and eddys. We had to full throttle to ensure the boat went where we wanted it to go. Captain Brown did a great job. Thankfully, we were able to secure a great anchorage once inside the inlet, which was peaceful and calm. Every day we were getting closer and closer to NYC, my hometown! #sailing #sailboat #sailingprojects #atlanticcity @barnegatinlet NEW TO OUR CHANNEL? We are Eileen and Brown Councill. Welcome to our channel and a glimpse into our life adventure! 2020 was a year of uncertainty and change (for all of us, right?), but we overcame the challenges and decided it was time to chase our dream, to sail around the world! Did I mention that we had very NO sailing experience? Before leaving Qingdao, China, our home of 4 years, we sold almost all of our earthly possessions and started our international search to find the right sailboat that we would call "home." After 5 months of unanticipated twists and turns, we found what we were looking for, a used Leopard 44' Catamaran located in St. Lucia. So, here begins our journey, filled with unmatched excitement and honestly, a bit of trepidation as well. We have much to learn as we travel the world on our floating home and we intend to document that journey and share it with you. We are so glad you have decided to join us, and we hope that you will find our story so compelling that it will inspire you to chase your dreams too! As a viewer, we consider you to be part of our family and look forward to getting to know you. Don't hesitate to comment on our videos and ask questions. We will do our best to answer every correspondence! All we ask is that you have patience with us as we work really hard to improve our camera/video techniques and ability to tell a story. IN THIS VIDEO This week we're aboard First Edition, an all electric power catamaran, courtesy of its owner, Peter. Join us as we explore this beautiful boat and the possibilities it represents for the future of boating. ABOUT FUTURE OUR PERFORMANCE CATAMARAN: We fell in love with the Balance 482 - it's a perfect size for a cruising couple to handle and is a great "balance" of performance and comfort. One of our favorite features is the excellent ventilation since we mostly live as "hookers" (aka at anchor) where the boat automatically turns into the wind so we stay cool and we don't need to battle mold. We also have starlink for easy off-grid life. Our 2400 watt solar panel array also means we rarely need to run an engine to charge our batteries. ABOUT US: We saved for a our future boat, Sold Everything that we owned, Shipped the rest in a container to Cape Town, South Africa, flew to Cape Town, South Africa airport, to explore South Africa including an amazing safari, touring around Cape Town, move onto a Balance 482 Catamaran, then sailed to St Helena, Ascension Island, Fernando de Naronha, Brazil, Martinique, Sint Maarten (Dutch and French), St. Croix, St. John, St. Thomas, Inagua, Crooked Island, Long Island, George Town, Staniel Cay, Eleuthera, Anegada, Bahamas, Cape Canaveral, St. Augustine Florida, USA, Matthews Virigina, Zimmerman's marine for a haul out, and more! Both Dennis and Ann grew up military brats with Army fathers. Dennis (the Colonel) served 30 years in the US Army and his retirement pension helped us retire in our 50s. Ann (the ship's Captain) wrote Test Automation in Python and Java. Dennis and Ann met on Match.com where Ann had in her profile "Do you want to sail the world with me?" Ann easily brought Dennis into sailing and he loved the GTFOplan of retiring early and sailing the world. After many years of saving, living on one income but earning two incomes, and cutting back on everything possible, they saved enough to buy a Balance 482. Follow them as they get real about boat life and all the hassles of buying a new boat because we all know N.E.W. means Not Everything Works. Kisses, Ann & Dennis Twitter: @GTFOplan Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/anndennis.snellikin.3 Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/gtfoplan/ From Peter: "There is no perfect boat. The balance between form and function, comfort and seaworthiness, cost and affordability, luxury and practical. First Edition is not about any of those things. It is about applying renewable clean technology to boating." It’s situated right in the middle of the densest jungle rainforest and feels like a zoo without fences. Every day we see sloths, monkeys, exotic birds and even a Cayman (small Croc!). The property has an infinity pool and many pristine beaches which we visit daily for exercise. Flowers in bright full bloom, lazy palms and bright sun are the backdrop of our every day lives. But this is cruising life which means the highest of highs - life in paradise - are matched with the lowest of lows, in this episode one of the worst boat projects around: Changing the head (toilet) hoses. Though marina a/c keeps Bill cool-ISH, nothing can be done about the stench. Or the boat yoga and tight spaces. This is POOP we’re talking about! At least we have access to the bathroom at the marina while the head is out of commission- Yet another perk of marina life. Though we prefer to be at anchor while cruising, Red Frog marina comes close very close to being just as great and definitely the best possible place to tackle our nasty head hoses! 0:00 Intro 1:32 Recap 1:40 Beautiful Red Frog Marina 6:40 Back to Reality..Changing Head Hoses 17:10 Sunset Dinghy Cruise w/ Dolphins 18:00 Monkeys & Sloth on the Ground -~-~~-~~~-~~-~- Enjoying our channel?
