This Hanse 588 has been lightly and carefully used and has never been chartered. She has wide uncluttered teak decks, a teak laid coach roof featuring huge sun pads, and a hydraulically controlled fold down transom and a garage housing a tender. The ample and ergonomic teak laid cockpit is fitted out with two B&G equipped steering pedestals and two electrically adjustable cockpit tables that can be converted into a big lounge area. All lines run aft from the mast below deck to rope clutches and Lewmar winches set within easy reach of both helm stations. All the way forward is a big sail locker. She is very well equipped with Elvström in mast main sail, self-tacking jib, furling genoa, electric winches and a hydraulic adjustable backstay. Furthermore a 150hp Volvo diesel engine, retractable bow thruster, folding prop, generator, and a life raft. This Hanse 588 offers impressive interior volume, and thanks to the large port lights, numerous hatches it feels like a bright and open loft. The central saloon features large settees to port and starboard, a u-shaped galley, and a chart table to port. The master cabin with island double berth, storage space and a head with separate shower stall is located forward. Located aft are two spacious double bed guest cabins and a head compartment with separate shower stall. Furthermore, there is a guest cabin to port with double bunk bed. To make your stay on board even more comfortable she is fitted out with air conditioning throughout, electric toilets and a dishwasher. This is "The Story Of Hawila" - a series documenting the refit and community surrounding the ship "S/V Hawila", a traditional wooden sailing ship built in 1935 in Norway. A group of friends saved the ship from destruction. They formed the not-for-profit organisation "Hawila Project" in 2014 and have operated the vessel as a platform for culture and education since then. The vision has always been to bridge coastal communities and engage the public in challenging issues surrounding globalization, overconsumption, and the climate crisis. Now, the goal is to integrate ethical transport of sustainably produced organic goods, which is why the ship has been in a structural overhaul since September 2020 in Holbæk, Denmark. Hawila will be sailing 60 tons of organic products and trainees across the Atlantic in an emission-free way, showing that respectful, ethical, and clean transport is possible. In this intro to our series "The Story Of Hawila", we are bringing Hawila back into the water at the end of March 2022 after 3 months of intense work on the hull. This week on Kawai, we pull her from the water to get her ready for the winter. We are positioned at Marmaris Yacht marina, where we use the 70 tonne lift to pull Kawai out of the water and place her on a stand. Kawai is hauled out just in time before the winter storms role in which is a tad nerve racking (This video was recorded on the 16th of December 2019). Trace and I prepare the boat for winter as we plan to return to Australia for 4 months to visit family and friends (pre-covid). Cleaning, organising and readying Kawai for winter is new to us, and we go through the many processes of making her ready. We fly home to Australia to see family and friends, unaware of what was to come in the following months/years. About us: Our names are Jason and Tracey and we traded our house, cars, business, job and security for freedom, adventure, travel and living simply amongst nature and the seas on our 45 foot Hanse 445 sailing boat, Kawai. We don't know exactly where the winds will take us at this stage but over the last year we have sailed to Turkey, Greece, Montenegro, Croatia.
