In January 2020, we replaced our traditionnal biocide antifouling with a silicone based antifouling from Hempel (not sponsored, we payed for it). We had to scrape our entire hull bare and replace the primer, add a tie coat and apply two layers of the silic-one. So how do it do? Das Wetter im westlichen Mittelmeer spielt verrückt. Gewitterfronten riesigen Ausmaßes ziehen über das Meer, verwandeln Küstenstädte in reißende Flüsse, werfen über 60 Yachten auf Korsika an Land. Zwölf Tote soll es gegeben haben. Und wir sind mitten drin. Erst im Nachhinein realisieren wir, wie glimpflich wir davongekommen sind. Auf den Liparischen Inseln wollen wir uns von den schlaflosen Nächten der Überfahrt erholen. Doch der August ist der Ferienmonat in Italien. Aus den übervollen Buchten wuchern die Ankerlieger wie Krebsgeschwüre. Und dann erwischt es auch uns. Als wir als zwölftes Boot noch einen Ankerplatz auf Vulcano ergattert haben - und denken das war der letzte sichere Platz - kommen noch weitere 50 Boote, werfen Anker, lassen kaum Kette, verlassen das Schiff, um an Land zu fahren. Dann dreht der Wind. Auch wir werden von einem anderen Boot gerammt, andere treiben führerlos ab. Schreie, Kettengerassel und die Lichtkegel der Scheinwerfer wabern durch die Nacht, dazu ein teuflischer Schwefelgestank aus einem Vulkan, der eine ungewohnt starke Aktivität aufweist. Segeln kann so schön sein :)

The weather in the western Mediterranean is going crazy. Thunderstorms move across the sea, turning coastal towns into raging rivers, throwing over 60 yachts ashore on Corsica. Twelve people are said to have died. And we are in the middle of it. Only afterwards do we realise how lucky we were. On the Lipari Islands we want to recover from the sleepless nights of the crossing. But August is the holiday month in Italy. Anchorage berths proliferate from the overcrowded bays like cancerous growths. And then it hits us too. When we were the twelfth boat to get hold of an anchorage on Vulcano - and we thought it was the last safe place - another 50 boats came, dropped anchor, hardly left any chain, left the ship to go ashore. Then the wind shifts. We too are rammed by another boat, others drift off leaderless. Screams, the rattling of chains and the cones of headlights waft through the night, along with a devilish smell of sulphur from a volcano that is showing unusual activity. Sailing can be so beautiful :)

We wrap up our wonderful season in Bahamas with a few epic dives both in the Berries and Bimini. Even though our auto pilot is out it doesn't stop us from having a great sail back to Florida. Our new 36 foot Contest Yacht comes home to Haarlem. Catran and Thijs sail the IJsselmeer (Lake) and the Markermeer to bring her from Medemblik to Haarlem. They take her through the Naviduct at Enkhuizen The diesel engine gets a good run while they make their way into Amsterdam where they stay for the night at Aeolus yacht club. They experience a gorgeous sunset as they use one of autumns last weather windows to do a mini shakedown sail

We recently visited New England in May 2022. We couldn't just see it from the land. We had to get out on a sailboat. We chartered one in Newport RI. Still cold in May up there! It was a great sail. Lots of well known people have houses on the water. Jackie Kennedy grew up there and we saw the house and lawn where he wedding to JFK was held. Great captain and crew as well. Next time we'll be in our own boat.

Ocean Club was back in fabulous style at the 2022 Sydney International Boat Show, hosting the Mid-Winter Soirée overlooking Cockle Bay and Darling Harbour. After two years, it was high time to reconnect and the Ocean Club Lounge in Cafe Del Mar was the perfect venue. Held on the opening night of the show, Thursday 28 July, the evening was carefully curated by the Ocean Media team. Guests at the lavish party included yacht owners, VIPs, sponsors and industry partners, who all gathered to celebrate the return of the show with Hillary Buckman, Managing Director and Editor-in-Chief at Ocean Media. With the support of our Ocean's Elite Lounge Partners Benetti Yachts, Burgess, Ponant, and Echo Yachts and our Ocean Lounge Partners Gold Coast City Marina and Shipyard, Pantaenius, Analu and Alsaker Private Buyers Agents, the Mid Winter Soirée were a huge success.

With captains, VIPs, owners and industry representatives and experts all convening for the Sydney International Boat Show in late July, Ocean Media took this unique opportunity to bring everyone together for the inaugural Captains of Industry Roundtable and Lunch on Friday 29 July. The goal of the Roundtable event was to host a relaxed yet respectful space in which attendees could contribute to an ever-growing discussion regarding the yachting industry in Australia and globally. To regulate the wide-ranging subject matter, three key topics were introduced: owners and crew, building yachts in Australia and cruising with a conscience, which attendees were made aware of prior to the Roundtable, allowing them to gather their thoughts and ideas. Before settling in for a three-course degustation lunch, Dr Andy Lewis from the Coral Sea Foundation addressed the audience once again, this time as guest speaker to talk about the Great Barrier Reef.
