In July 2018, Quicksilver embarked on an Australian-first collaborative reef research and restoration project with scientists from Reef Ecologic to restore a cyclone impacted coral bommie. Four years later, the results speak for themselves. “This project has been highly successful with significant increase in coral coverage and survival of relocated colonies. Important knowledge has also been gained in reef resilience and coral nurturing techniques,” said Quicksilver Group Environment and Compliance Manager, Doug Baird. Located at Quicksilver’s Agincourt 3 platform, the small coral bommie under restoration was impacted by cyclonic waves several years prior and with an unstable substrate, natural recovery was impeded. With GBRMPA approval, the project entailed the installation of six steel mesh panels of 1.5 x 3 metres size to grow coral ‘recruits’ of which three were initially connected to a power source. This was the first time this type of project had been conducted in Australia on the Great Barrier Reef

This week we take a short break from sailing to go ashore and watch as much of the local celebration of Heiva as we can. Heiva is a Polynesian celebration that occurs every July in Tahiti, and since we just happened to be here during it, we are taking full advantage of all the festivities! First we get to see a few of the competitions like fruit carrying races, spear throwing, palm tree climbing, and lastly coconut husking racing... It was amazing getting to see so much of the Polynesian culture, and after the competitions we were lucky enough to get to see a few of the spirited and world famous dancing displays... In this episode we hop our way down the Costa Rican coast with three generations onboard, visiting some amazing spots along the way. Pa (grandpa) falls overboard while were flying along at 8.5 knots and disappears on the horizon so quickly! We retrieved him relatively unharmed and find ourselves more worried about his mobile phone than him. For the record nearly one year on and his iphone 13 is still working! We also stop off at Manuel Antonio National Park and catch a look at some white-faced monkeys and enjoy a bush walk through the lush rainforest that comes all the way to meet the ocean. What a Catch ! This is definetely the CATCH I WILL NEVER FORGET AS we caught this big Tuna while sailing. It did cost us our fishing pole as it cracked in half as we were trying to bring this big TUNA aboard the boat. Not only that but a shark wanted to snap it first. Tips for giving good weather for boaters: 1) Don't refresh the weather report while you are reading it. 2) Give wind speed in knots, not miles per hour. 3) When the tide approaches -1ft in La Paz, that is extreme La Paz Waltz conditions 4) Do not tell people the weather is nice when it's the worst day of a 3 day norther. 5) Giving tide information that already happened is a waste, as is reading the future tide predictions. 6) The local forecast is only good for 2-3 days. 10 day forecasts are unreliable. 7) If you are a land station, don't complain about not being able to hear cruisers on boats.
