Our wildest cruising dreams have been realized as we sail our wooden Ingrid Ketch to the Bay of Virgins in Fatu Hiva. This spectacular island has to be one of the most beautiful in the entire world. Far off the beaten path, the people of Fatu Hiva live peaceful lives on their garden island. We were welcomed into thier homes, enjoying the local cuisine and even helping to harvest fruit from a jungle farm. We had gentle sailing between islands, vising Tahuata, the smallest inhabited island of the Marquesas, before ending up at Atuona to re-provision. With stunningly beautiful anchorages seperated by short day sails, generous local people, and unspoiled sea life, this will certainly be one of our favorite cruising desitnations anywhere. Julia is a traditionally built wooden boat. Built in 1960 to Atkin's Ingrid design, she is planked in fir and cedar over oak frames. Our dinghy is skin-on-frame and was designed by Dave Gentry. Great barrier island is part of New Zealand but lies 60 nautical miles off the coast of Auckland. There is no power grid there so everyone has to either run generators or use some sort of renewable power source... Le rocher du Diamant, les bouées de pêcheur, Saint Pierre, cette fois ci, nous ne devrions pas revenir de sitôt ! Peut-être lors d’un troisième ou quatrième tour du monde, dans le bon sens. Du moins, dans le sens où le vent nous poussera. C’est lui après tout qui est le plus important en voilier, au portant, c’est comme cela que nous l’aimons. Après, nous pourrions aussi prendre l’option de faire un tour par les trois caps, mais là, ce n’est pas le même « kikidubistouquin », qui sait ? Un jour peut-être ! Quand nous serons plus aguerris et que nous serons prêts à subir des vagues démesurées. Pour le moment, celles d’un mètre cinquante à deux mètres dans le canal de la Dominique nous suffisent amplement ! Et Blacky file sous bonne allure ! Il nous fait plaisir. Nous sommes heureux ! Un marlin vient nous titiller, une baleine se montre. Nous arrivons à Rivière Sens avant la nuit, 82 milles en 12 heures ! L’étape va être importante pour moi, pour Tchoupi aussi d’ailleurs. C’est ici qu’avec notre fils, nos chemins vont prendre des directions différentes. Lui, va rester dans l’arc Antillais avec sa chérie, et nous, nous allons reprendre direction ouest, vers l’océan de notre cœur, le Pacifique. Avant, j’en rêvais depuis trois ans, nous allons passer les fêtes en famille en profitant de ces intenses instants.

We figure out how to lift the anchor and go on to enjoy a week of sun, swimming and snorkeling. Tiller has her 4 year old birthday. And we have a fabulous sail back to Rotoava in Fakarava. As we drop off our friends at the airport, the new windlass Pierre ordered in on the plane. Problem solved so we did not need to return to Papeete. Will it ever go it? If we are ever going to move our boat again, we need to get our engine up and running. The trip north really did a number on her and we are now ready to put everything back in working order. But that doesn’t always prove to be as easy as you hope. It’s funny how all boat projects seem to turn out that way. Maybe it’s being in different locations all the time when you are sourcing parts. Maybe it’s because you don’t have access to a vehicle or the right tools on hand. Or, it could just be dealing with teeny tiny working spaces. Whatever the reason it always seems to be a bigger project then when you started! But regardless of the agony our bodies seem to be in everyday, we are feeling safer and safer in our floating home knowing that the work has been completed, and completed correctly. We know that all the effort we are putting in now will payoff in the end. This journey is also teaching us that we don’t need to know how to do everything. Sometimes you need to call in the professionals to get the job done right. Even if we are driving the professionals crazy sometimes with our demands. Wir nehmen dich mit auf unsere Reise von blutigen Anfängern zu hoffentlich passablen Seglern. Getauft wurde sie auf den stolzen Namen Meera. Nach dem ersten Winterlager mit der Überarbeitung des Unterwasserschiffs, sind wir 2022 in unsere erste Segelsaison gestartet. Also kommt mit auf unsere Reise die Welt zu erkunden, für den Anfang erstmal die Ostsee. Da wir noch echte Rookies sind, müssen wir erstmal lernen zu Segeln und was es heißt abhängig von der Natur zu sein. Bevor es in die weite Welt hinaus geht, liegt noch ein Berg an Arbeit vor uns. Episode 7: What do you need to know before cruising the canals and rivers of France in a sailboat? Which sea port to enter the inland waterways? Which boat set up is best? Which route to avoid grounding or crashing bridges and tunnels? Which is the shortest, or longest route? We had a thought - take a sailboat from Hull, England to the Mediterranean Sea through France, via Paris and some very small canals. Research material to prepare for this journey included websites, books, YouTube and Facebook. In all of this we found lots of information scattered across the different platforms, searching unsuccessfully for one pivot point providing a central star around which all the planets fell into reliable orbit. We had questions; we wanted answers; and greatly appreciated the experienced postings and videos presented by like minded people. But, we felt there was a gap; where were the visual experiences linked with offering answers? I'm not sure how this video will be received, if at all, by people with a desire to take a sailboat through the inland waterways however, this is our attempt to fill the gap we thought existed.
