In this episode we continue our northbound sailing cruise of the Bahamas island chain known as the Exumas. We first stop at an underwater plane wreck at Norman's Cay. Most people seem to say it's a drug smuggling plane....but we have other info that seems more plausible. We then head to Highbourne Cay and check out some nurse sharks and a grey shark. We then move up to Allan Cay, where we see another iguana island. Along the way we've been buddy-boating with our friends on SV Papaki, and we get the opportunity to help them with water making as they have a few boat projects to do! Next up, Nassau, for the Pirate museum, and where Jeannine's parents depart after their epic visit. Thanks for following! Yet another night on Lake Tarawera this week. 6.30pm and 8 degrees C with temp expected to get down to 3 overnite. It did. Bacon, Eggs, Hash Browns and Baked Beans for dinner, with Peaches and Yoghurt for dessert. All washed down with a beer and a glass of red. All very civilised! I used the trusty Trangia as well as the little gas Hikers Stove as there were 4x foods needing cooking/heating. Nige had his share of course.

September 18-19 50°57’45.2″N 1°50’54.5″E Sail from Amsterdam Marina to Calais, France: 149nm 21hrs Fair winds Clear skies – and yet ANOTHER firey orange sunset! Just the thought of heading out onto the North Sea again made us a little nervous. However, we couldn’t have had a more lovely start! The sun was shining, the seas were relatively calm & it was 18 degrees Celcuis! We didn’t imagine it could be this delightful on the North Sea! We were hopeful, to say the least, as the sun set & we were heading into darkness. However, we got ourselves into a dangerous position in relation to a cluster of cargo ships that were coming at us at a speed of 13knots! We ended up having our worst, scariest night-sail yet! Gratefully, with the morning, comes new hope! Sailing into the mooring area of Calais Marina was a relief & we were kindly issued a mooring ball to hook up to. We experienced a major tide-difference for the first time as sailors. We found out that the tides change every few hours & have a difference of about 7meters!! We explored the fortress next to the harbor and later found the boardwalk along the beach. There was an old fortress at the harbor and later on we found the boardwalk along the beach. On the way there, though, we noticed a large glass garage with people lining up to go inside. A huge dragon was behind the window. After observing, we saw it start moving, and after the people were mounted on the dragon’s back, it began to walk (roll) out of the glass garage! Not only that, but as it started it’s “walk” along the promenade, it blew out real fire and sprayed water at the audience on the ground! (I was a little concerned that the operator could get the fire & water button mixed up and singe a few people!) This was definitely the highlight of our trip to Calais, for the boys. Since we entered into a new country, we were obliged to buy the boys another ice cream, according to our deal (1 country – 1 ice cream – 1 picture)! Lucky for us, there was an ice cream kiosk on the promenade. It was both cheap and the server was generous with the scoops! (Mommy got her picture of the boys on the beach, too!)

My spinnaker is actually a Symmetrical spinnaker, from a GP14. However I have seen countless videos of various boats sailing with "Symmetric" spinnakers, "Asymmetrically". So, I thought i'd give it a try on Lulu!! Asymmetrical spinnakers have a few benefits over symmetrical ones. They're easier to manage and fly, especially if sailing solo. They also give you a wider angle of use to the wind and they can be flown with the jib still up too. It turned out that it wasn't a particularly good day for sailing but there was just enough wind to prove the point. The test left me plenty to think about and plenty of work to do to refine the sail, but I think it was a success overall. Nachdem wir uns Nyborg ausgiebig erkundet haben, geht es nun weiter nach Ballen auf die Insel Samsø. Die Wettervorhersage war aber irgendwie anders. Und für Ende Mai vieeeeel zu kalt. So ist wohl segeln in der Arktis. Nichts für uns. Aber glücklicherweise hellt sich das Wetter nach der Hälfte des Weges etwas auf und wir können sogar noch mit dem Parasailor segeln. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ziel dieser Saison war eigentlich Norwegen. Aber es sollte anders kommen. Immerhin haben wir es bis Skagen geschafft. Von dort über die westschwedischen Schären an der Westküste Dänemarks vorbei bis wieder nach Wismar. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Schaut selbst in den folgenden Videos, welche Häfen und Ankerplätze wir angelaufen haben und was wir dort erlebt haben. Vorab schon einmal....es war kalt aber wunderschön und wir haben sehr nette Menschen kennengelernt. Viel Spaß!
