La Rochelle welcomed Vendée Globe finishers Benjamin Dutreux and Clarisse Crémer with open arms after they couldn't enter the channel at Les Sables d'Olonne due to rough seas. We take a look at the scenes and hear from Clarisse Cremer on the shore. We then hear from Boris Herrmann, as both he and Sam Davies try to pass Cape Finisterre in a small lull between the storms. We bring you updates from them, and then Kojiro Shiraishi at the equator and Violette Dorange making a delicious dinner at sunset. We then look at the Tracker, Leaderboard and PredictWind routing options for Romain Attanasio in 14th. We conclude with updates from Kojiro Shiraishi in a lumpy sea in the North Atlantic and Oliver Heer from half way up the mast. #vg2024 #imoca #vendeeglobe #sailing

This Week: This is just an update! The past couple of weeks have been more chaotic than normal for our family of 7,. Between two hulls literally and what seems to be an immense amount of driving have wore the crew down. We will be back in full swing next Monday so be sure to come back and check out the next step in our journey and getting back to the water after being land locked for 2 months! https://oembed.libsyn.com/embed?item_id=35005990

The storm in the North Atlantic has made it too rough in Les Sables d'Olonne for latest Vendée Globe finishers Benjamin Dutreux and Clarisse Crémer to enter the channel, so they've had to divert to La Rochelle for shelter. We bring you updates from them, and then Kojiro Shiraishi at the equator and Violette Dorange making a delicious dinner at sunset. We then look at the Tracker, Leaderboard and PredictWind routing options for Romain Attanasio in 14th, who is aiming to the west of the Azores exclusion zone. We conclude with Andi Robertson interviewing Sam Goodchild after he finished over the weekend. #vg2024 #imoca #vendeeglobe #sailing

In Episode 48 of the Sailing Goat Series, we focus on improving life onboard with two major upgrades. First, we install a mini washing machine to make daily living more comfortable. This involved cutting a wall in the bathroom and plenty of drilling, but it was worth it! Even though it’s a knockoff machine made in China, it’s working perfectly so far. Second, we add 50 meters of anchor chain to our setup, allowing us to anchor securely in remote areas with depths of up to 30 meters. To help fellow sailors, we’ve included a quick tutorial on best practices for anchoring scope and safety below. Join us for a week of hard work, upgrades, and exciting new possibilities for life at sea. 🛠️ Mini Washing Machine Installation: Watch as we transform our onboard living space by installing a compact washing machine. The installation required cutting a wall in the bathroom and careful drilling, but the end result is a game-changer for onboard comfort and convenience. ⚓ Anchoring Upgrade: We extend our anchor chain by 50 meters, enhancing our ability to anchor safely in deeper and more remote locations. This upgrade opens up a world of possibilities for exploring secluded bays and untouched destinations. 📚 Anchoring Best Practices – Scope Guidelines: Proper scope is crucial for safe anchoring. Here's a quick guide: Calculate Scope: The scope is the ratio of the length of anchor rode (chain/rope) paid out to the vertical distance from the bow roller to the seabed. Calm Weather: Use a 5:1 ratio (e.g., 5 meters of chain for every 1 meter of depth). Moderate Conditions: Use a 7:1 ratio for better holding in wind or current. Stormy Weather: Increase to a 10:1 ratio for maximum security. Check the Bottom Type: Ensure your anchor is suitable for the seabed (e.g., sand, mud, or rock). Set the Anchor: Once the scope is out, reverse slowly to set the anchor and ensure it holds. Test the Hold: Gently increase engine power in reverse to confirm the anchor is secure. 🌊 Life at Sea Improvements: This week’s upgrades are all about making life onboard more comfortable and versatile. From easier laundry days to safer anchoring, these changes enhance both our daily routine and our sailing adventures. 💬 Join the Conversation: Have you made similar onboard upgrades or have tips for anchoring in deep water? Share your experiences, thoughts, or questions in the comments below. Let’s connect over the joys and challenges of sailing life. 👍 If you’re inspired by our onboard upgrades and anchoring tutorial, give this video a thumbs up, share it with fellow sailors, and subscribe to the Sailing Goat Series for more updates. 🔗 Connect with Sailing Goat: Instagram: @nobodysride Instagram: @sailing_svgoat 📌 Hashtags: #SailingGoat #MiniWashingMachine #BoatUpgrades #AnchoringTips #ScopeGuidelines #SailingLife #LifeAtSea ⛵ Join us for a week of practical upgrades and new possibilities as we prepare for even more exciting adventures at sea. Before you raise any comment please note: As stated in the video this is not the completed installation. We have solar and other works to complete. It is not possible to include all the detail in in just 30 minutes of video! Part two will follow shortly. Part 2 here. https://youtu.be/xd2R3VjAjQw Having to stay in the UK for a few months we need to be sure the Camper van which is new to us is working and in tip top condition. The starter battery was old and needed to be changed and when we checked the house battery that was only holding 60% of capacity. We renewed the starter battery and upgraded the house battery to lithium as it was a Black Friday deal we got a bargain 200Ah/2560Wh LiFePO4 battery. Adding a BM712 from Victron and a 1230/12/20 Victron smart charger means we have a great setup with only the solar to add. Here is what we did to the van and yes it was freezing cold!!
