After days of light winds, small adjustments begin to make a difference. A prop pitch change gives us a little more speed, dolphins appear alongside the boat, music plays, and life onboard finds its flow — kids everywhere, good food, and those quiet moments that make passages feel manageable. But as we get closer to land, the skies begin to darken. Forecasts are showing a developing tropical system — Storm Senyar — and conditions across the region are starting to deteriorate. With worsening weather expected over the Anambas and nightfall approaching, we make the decision not to push on. Instead, we find what shelter we can behind a small island and drop the anchor, choosing caution over distance. This episode captures passage life as it really is — the balance between progress and patience, joy and vigilance, and the constant decisions that come with sailing a family boat offshore. Just after half past eleven at night, I brought Osprey solo into Cherbourg Inner Harbour. This move wasn’t rushed. I’d planned it carefully, spending hours on the dock beforehand, watching traffic patterns, weather windows, and how the harbour actually behaves at night. After a couple of days studying conditions, I shifted the boat from the outer waiting dock into the security of Cherbourg Inner Harbour—a place with a long history as a refuge on the Normandy coast. This year’s weather has been noticeably harsher than usual. I’ve had messages from subscribers reporting damage to boats all along the south coast of the UK, so being here isn’t just convenient, it’s appropriate. Berth One is an honour to be alongside—but doing it alone changes everything. Solo means slow, deliberate, and methodical. Every step has to be thought through. Every failure mode considered in advance. This footage is less about drama and more about process: planning, patience, and respecting the reality of moving a big boat without crew, late at night, in a working harbour. - La prima cosa da "marinaretti" che si impara a bordo? Fare il nodo per legare i parabordi alle draglie, il "parlato" e tutte le sue varianti. Ad avere a che fare con questi ingombranti oggetti ci si deve abituare subito e resta poi una costante della vita di ogni barca e di ogni equipaggio. In molti casi i classici "salsicciotti" gonfiabili in PVC diventano un problema a bordo, dove ogni centimetro cubo di stivaggio è importante: sono ingombranti, molesti (perché del tutto inutili a bordo se non quando si è in porto) e anche piuttosto bruttini. Non a caso i parabordi di ultima generazione si sono evoluti proprio per cercare di renderli meno ingombranti, più belli e anche versatili. Così come insegna l'ABC del design, si è lavorato su forma e funzione. This is a bit of a different kind of video – created together with Sohvi and her research project at the Arctic Centre, University of Lapland. The short documentary explores the role and agency of ice in shaping Arctic futures by following a sailboat journey through the Northwest Passage and an overwintering in Kalaallit Nunaat. Plonger au cœur d’un iceberg géant au Groenland. C’est l’expédition la plus extrême que j’ai jamais vécue. Pendant 6 mois, je me suis préparé à bord de mon voilier : plongées d’entraînement dans les Caraïbes, puis remontée vers le nord du Canada jusqu’aux eaux glaciales du Groenland. Objectif : entrer à l’intérieur d’un iceberg. Sous la surface, tout devient irréel. La lumière change, des bulles s’échappent de la glace, et un grondement sourd traverse parfois l’eau. Un iceberg peut se fissurer ou se retourner à tout moment… et nous plongeons dessous. Easy mornings, slow days, and a chance to reset before things get wild. Our first stop is the stunning Tukad Cepung Waterfall — and let’s just say we got absolutely drenched without even going for a swim. Tucked away inside a cave, this waterfall is an incredible sight and easily one of the highlights of our time in Bali. From there, we head into the rice fields where I face my fears on the sky bikes. Suspended high above the paddies, it was hands down one of the scariest things I’ve done, and I was very happy to see the end of that ride! To finish things off, we jump on four wheels for an unforgettable off-road adventure — racing through rice fields, splashing through muddy water, driving through tunnels, and even under waterfalls. Pure fun, plenty of laughs, and the perfect way to wrap up our Indonesia journey before heading back to the boat. Treasure is always in the eye of the beholder. Whenever I’m walking along a beach, my gaze is constantly sweeping the sand for shark teeth, arrowheads, unusual shells, or—if luck is really on my side—a stray gold doubloon. Even with the beach packed with people, we still managed to uncover a few shark teeth and some small shells. At day’s end, we laid out our finds for comparison. The sun would wake us early, and today there was some wind. We move Smile to a more protected area and had a final feast with our friends before they take off for Italy. We then move to Lilah's favourite swim spot to celebrate her birthday. The locals had all said "cyclones in November/December?? no way!) Getting into a marina up here involves having your underwater areas checked and treated for unwanted species of shellfish. This involves staying on a pontoon for 10 hours while not using any thru-hulls, engine etc. The we had to organise insurance after being without any in Indonesia. We finally got into the marina and made the call to leave. We'd booked this road trip to Brisbane a while before and there were penalties involved if we didnt deliver the vehicle in time.
