In this episode of the Sailing and Cruising the East Coast of the United States podcast, hosts Bela Musits and Mike Wasserman sit down with a guest whose life mission sits at the intersection of high-stakes offshore sailing and cutting-edge brain science. Phil Haydon is a retired neuroscientist who has turned his personal battle with a hidden disability into a global movement called Sail For Epilepsy. Phil shares his deeply personal journey, which began at the age of 15 when a head injury led to a lifelong diagnosis of epilepsy. Despite the physical, cognitive, and emotional challenges, Phil rose to the top of the scientific community. Now, he is using the platform of offshore sailing to "give back" to a community that often suffers in silence due to deep-seated social stigma. The conversation covers the staggering reality of the condition: 1 in 26 people will develop epilepsy in their lifetime, and 1 in 10 will experience a seizure. Phil explains the biological nature of epilepsy—as an alteration in the brain's electrical activity—while highlighting famous figures like Danny Glover and NFL quarterback Justin Fields who live with the condition. Most importantly, Phil provides a masterclass on the "why" and "how" of seizure first aid, proving that with the right education, we can build a world where people with epilepsy can live full, uninhibited lives. Time-Stamped Chapters 00:23 – Introduction: Sailing and Cruising the East Coast with Bela Musits & Mike Wasserman. 00:41 – Introducing Phil Haydon: Neuroscientist and Founder of Sail For Epilepsy. 01:14 – The impact of epilepsy on families and personal life. 01:58 – Reducing the stigma: Making the world a better place through conversation. 02:40 – "What do you do?" Phil’s unique approach to social introductions. 03:15 – The 15-year-old’s head injury that changed everything. 03:57 – The mission of Sail For Epilepsy: Inspiration and education. 04:12 – Staggering statistics: 1 in 26 and the 1 in 10 rule. 04:30 – Famous people living with epilepsy: From Danny Glover to Justin Fields. 04:47 – Essential First Aid: What to do if someone has a seizure. 05:08 – The Science: Understanding electrical activity in the brain. Key Takeaways & Highlights The Power of Visibility: Phil explains that epilepsy is often a "hidden" disability. By sailing offshore and speaking publicly, he aims to show that a diagnosis doesn't have to limit one's horizons. Universal Impact: With 1 in 26 people developing the condition, almost everyone knows someone affected by epilepsy, yet it remains one of the most stigmatized neurological issues. Seizure First Aid: One of Phil’s primary goals is educating the public on how to react during a seizure, a skill he believes is as vital as CPR. A Scientific Perspective: As a neuroscientist, Phil bridges the gap between the medical reality of brain activity and the lived experience of a patient. Most experienced boaters understand the advantages of aluminum hulls—so why aren’t aluminum recreational trawlers more common in North America? It largely comes down to awareness and availability. These boats simply aren’t widely promoted, and buyers tend to stick with what they know. Beyond that, there are real technical and logistical challenges: aluminum construction demands a highly skilled workforce, specialized facilities, and lacks the same scalability and production efficiencies as FRP modular builds. In this video, we break down why aluminum trawlers remain rare—and what makes them worth a closer look. 0:00 - Introduction 0:50 - Availability & Awareness 1:25 - Scale in Construction 2:15 - Skilled Workforce 2:36 - Efficiencies 3:25 - Conclusion Learn more about Korvet Trawlers: https://korvettrawlers.com/ Built by Deep Water Yachts: https://www.deepwateryachts.com/ #trawlerlife #aluminumboat #trawler #selene #nordhavn #aluminumyachts #trawlerfest #gonewiththewynns

Welcome back to another episode of WE|Sail. EPISODE 337 Seven years. Over 30,000 nautical miles. We've sailed to some incredible places, and Fiji is definitely one of them. Our days have a rhythm: sail, anchor, explore, maintain the boat, edit. The flow is pretty much the same. But somehow, every single day out here is different. This week started peacefully—sailing north through Fiji's Yasawa Islands, fishing, watching thousands of flying foxes fill the sky at sunset. Then the weather turned. A cyclone had formed about 300 kilometers south of Fiji's main island, Viti Levu. We weren't in its direct path, but we were experiencing the outer bands—heavy rain and wind feeding the storm south of us. The forecast had been tracking it for days, and we positioned ourselves in a protected bay, anchored for the predicted wind direction. Except we got it wrong. The wind wasn't coming from the North like predicted—it was hitting us from the west. And that put us dangerously close to shore with not enough room if our anchor dragged. For hours, the wind kept building instead of calming. The longer we stayed, the more uncomfortable we felt. We had to make the call: pull anchor and reposition in the middle of heavy weather. This episode shows both sides of cruising during cyclone season—the peaceful rhythm and the intense moments when the forecast doesn't cooperate and you have to adapt fast. This is why we're one of the few boats still out here right now. You have to be prepared, stay alert, and trust your instincts even when the models say something different. After seven years of this life, we've learned to expect the unexpected. The rhythm stays the same, but the days never do. ⚠️ CYCLONE SEASON SAILING: We're sailing Fiji during cyclone season (November-April) when most cruisers have left. We stay vigilant, watch forecasts closely, position ourselves in protected bays, and are always ready to move if conditions change. This is advanced cruising—not recommended for beginners. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ⚓ Thanks for watching! This isn’t a video about AI in theory. This is about using it for real — offshore, alone, under pressure. Over the last 5,000 miles, I’ve been using AI in a way that’s very different from how most people approach it. Not as a tool for quick answers, but as a way to think things through, to stay clear-headed, and to avoid mistakes when it matters. Out here, the challenge isn’t usually a lack of knowledge — it’s holding everything together at the same time. Fatigue, weather, systems, decisions… it adds up quickly, but what I have found is, that used properly, AI can help keep that thread intact. It’s not thinking for me, it’s not always right, and it definitely has limits, but it can act as a second layer of cognition— something that helps stay on track when things get stressful or unclear. This video isn’t a deep dive into the system itself, it’s an imitial marker — a way of introducing what I’ve been working on out here, and why it’s become such a central part of how I operate offshore. There’s a lot more to come on this. Need More Mariner? The Mariner Podcast Practical offshore knowledge — heavy weather, safety, and real-world sailing. Finally a break in the weather and we got after one of the bigger projects on our three masted steel sailboat - Alaskan Gypsy - replacing the running rigging. This boat sat for years and most of the lines are original we believe. 30+ years of Southeast Alaska weather has taken its toll. Some of it is literally falling apart in your hands. The problem is cost. Replacing all the rigging the “right” way would have been thousands more than we could afford right now. So instead, we took a chance on budget double braid polyester… about $0.40/ft instead of $1.50+. In this video: Unloading and inspecting ~2,000 ft of new line Comparing cheap vs higher-end rigging Re-running lines through blocks without climbing (when possible) Learning to splice on the fly Climbing into the rigging with a makeshift setup Finding unexpected parts and tools already on board First sail impressions with the new lines with aerial footage This is real life working on an old sailboat in Alaska. Not perfect, not finished… just figuring it out as we go! We live aboard this triple-masted schooner year-round in Southeast Alaska, learning, fixing, and slowly bringing her back to life. We’ll report back after some real use… and see how this “cheap” line holds up. ⏱️ CHAPTERS 00:00 Intro aboard Alaskan Gypsy 00:45 The problem: 30-year-old rigging 02:00 How much line we actually need 03:30 The cost reality (and why we went cheap) 05:00 Unboxing the new rigging 07:00 What we actually ordered 09:00 Climbing gear & working aloft 11:00 Shipping to Alaska (the real cost) 13:00 Finding the budget line online 16:00 Finally replacing lines (weather window) 18:00 How we run new line without climbing 22:00 Getting through the blocks 24:00 Thimbles, splices, and surprises 27:00 Cheap vs quality line comparison 31:00 How much extra line do you leave? 33:30 Whales show up (of course) 36:00 The boat’s hidden parts & history 40:00 Jackpot: finding stainless thimbles onboard 43:00 Climbing the rigging 48:00 What didn’t work (learning curve) 49:30 Working aloft + rigging breakdown 55:00 First impressions using the new line 56:30 Sailing footage + wrap up

Day 10 – Not Feeling It… Doing It Anyway | 75 Hard Challenge Day 10 of my 75 Hard journey and this one was a mental battle. Yesterday didn’t go to plan. I was busy filming and editing all morning, and before I knew it, half the day was gone and I still hadn’t done my first workout. The hardest part wasn’t the exercise… it was getting into the right mindset to even start. But I pushed through. In this video, I talk about forcing action when motivation isn’t there, how even a short workout can completely change your mindset, and why the days you don’t feel like it are the ones that matter most. I also share how getting up early today and smashing out a 13.7km bike ride before 9am completely changed my energy, focus, and outlook for the day. This challenge, created by Andy Frisella, is about more than fitness — it’s about discipline, mental toughness, consistency, and building a mindset, healthy habits and self improvement that carries into every part of life. 💥 Key takeaway: You don’t need motivation to start… you need action. 👍 If you’re enjoying the journey, don’t forget to like, comment, and subscribe. 💬 Let me know — have you had a “not feeling it” day recently? ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If you found it informative or entertaining please give it a thumbs as it helps get YouTube to promote it outside of the existing subscribers. --- #Segeln #Kroatien #Ankern #Boot #Segelboot #Sturm #Neverin #Sailing #BoatLife

We call Unit 2 in the new Harken integrated ILCA kicker/boom vang system “The Twiddle”. It’s the component that lives moving up and down in the middle of the purchase system. Until now, every 12:1 or 15:1 ILCA vang system ever designed has employed a traditional double block right there. Those sheaves manage different loads and spin at very different rates. So every conventional double block tips over, the line becomes unaligned and chafes the sides. The Twiddle is a fiddle block with a designed-in 45 degree twist. The Twiddle stays aligned and erases that chafe. This has not taken very long: sailors in other Classes are grasping the Twiddle’s potential to vanquish friction and improve responsiveness in purchase systems. Good on ‘em! The Twiddle was certainly designed for the ILCA but there is no reason you can’t put one to work in halyard tension or on the cunningham or anywhere else you figure they’ll work better. We finally took on one of the biggest and most important upgrades you can do on a sailboat… replacing all of our standing rigging. With our rigging over 14 years old and a Pacific crossing ahead of us, this wasn’t something we were willing to risk pushing any further. Even with regular inspections, there’s no real way to see what’s going on inside the wire—so at a certain point, replacement becomes the safest option. In this episode, we measure, remove, and install brand new rigging—learning the entire process along the way. From identifying fittings and working up the mast, to installing Sta-Lok terminals and even replacing our furling system, this was a full-on project. We originally planned to take it on ourselves, and while we did a huge portion of the work, we also had guidance along the way—which gave us the confidence to get it done right. If you’ve ever wondered what it actually takes to replace your rigging, this is the full process from start to finish. SAILING SERVICES MIAMI Website: https://www.sailingservices.com They helped guide us through measuring, selecting the correct fittings, and were available for support throughout the install. If you’d prefer to have your rigging done professionally: Bryce from Rig Works LLC Sailboat Rigger & Hardware Specialist Website: https://rig-works-llc.com/ If you’d like to support the channel and follow along even closer, we’ve got early access and ad-free videos over on Patreon—including daily vlogs from our sail from the USA to South America that aren’t on YouTube yet.
