Twisted Video: Harken's New Twiddle

We call Unit 2 in the new Harken integrated ILCA kicker/boom vang system “The Twiddle”. It’s the component that lives moving up and down in the middle of the purchase system. Until now, every 12:1 or 15:1 ILCA vang system ever designed has employed a traditional double block right there. Those sheaves manage different loads and spin at very different rates. So every conventional double block tips over, the line becomes unaligned and chafes the sides. The Twiddle is a fiddle block with a designed-in 45 degree twist. The Twiddle stays aligned and erases that chafe. This has not taken very long: sailors in other Classes are grasping the Twiddle’s potential to vanquish friction and improve responsiveness in purchase systems. Good on ‘em! The Twiddle was certainly designed for the ILCA but there is no reason you can’t put one to work in halyard tension or on the cunningham or anywhere else you figure they’ll work better.
