The history and architecture was overwhelming and made me wonder why we we can't create today like the Venitians did. I have my ideas... We were met by Matthias who is a Swiss national residing in Venice. He was so kind to show us how to walk like a Venetian. Haha. We stayed for three nights with a two night stay at the St Regis before we departed back to Croatia. We initially arrived in the town of Novigrad but decided to search out other anchorages. All we found were nudist resorts and Nicole flatly refused to anchor there so we returned to the mostly clothed Novigrad.

Nous quittons Lisbonne et la marina de Cascais à bord de Majentess pour mettre le cap sur Sesimbra. Une navigation très agréable avec une belle mer et jusqu’à 15 nœuds de vent : cette fois, nous profitons davantage de la voile que du moteur ! Nous passons la nuit au mouillage de Sesimbra, dans une ambiance un peu particulière… Le mouillage est bien venté mais reste parfaitement stable, tandis qu’à terre la fête bat son plein jusqu’à 6 heures du matin ! 🎶😂 Le lendemain matin, nous reprenons la mer en direction de Sines. Le vent est beaucoup plus faible et, pour passer le temps, nous décidons de mettre une ligne de traîne derrière Majentess. Et là… surprise ! 😳🦈 Quelque chose de beaucoup plus gros que prévu vient mordre à l’hameçon : un requin de plus d’un mètre ! La remontée est loin d’être simple et sa libération nous demande quelques efforts. Mais tout se termine bien : le requin repart à l’eau sans blessure et sans hameçon. 👍 Nous terminons cette étape à Sines, où nous découvrons une petite marina très sympathique, avant de poursuivre notre voyage vers le sud du Portugal. Es war still um uns geworden, während wir ein paar Wochen in Deutschland weilten. Im Vordergrund standen unsere Familien und die Erledigung etlicher Termine. Ein bisschen Urlaub aber hatten wir dann doch - bei unseren Freunden Maike und Kai-Uwe Eilts in Schleswig. Auf der Schlei konnten wir erstmals den von Kai-Uwe gebauten Flitzer fahren: die Ilensee 16, einen Daycruiser aus Mahagoni, den das Boote Magazin im Test als "Schmuckstück von der Schlei" bezeichnete. Kurz vor der Ankunft der Ausläufer von Tropensturm Dolly, flogen Miço und ich zurück in die Dominikanische Republik. Und der Empfang auf der Dilly-Dally glich einem Feuerwerk.

Leaving home waters behind for ocean passages, Caribbean anchorages and the unexpected. What happens when years of sailing the Solent turn into something much bigger? In this episode, Alan McIlroy sits down aboard ARKYLA with her owner, James Kenning, to look back at the adventures, challenges and thousands of miles that have taken this Swedish-built Regina 43 from familiar UK waters to the Mediterranean, across the Atlantic and into the Caribbean. James bought ARKYLA through Berthon in 2018. After a season sailing locally and preparing both yacht and skipper for longer passages, the plan began to grow. What followed was several years of cruising, refits, upgrades and offshore sailing that would take ARKYLA across Biscay, down the Iberian coast, into the Mediterranean and Balearics, through the waters now infamous for orca interactions, and eventually across the Atlantic with the 2024 ARC+ from the Canaries to Grenada via Cape Verde.   The Atlantic crossing would prove considerably more eventful than expected. Despite meticulous preparation, ARKYLA suffered a succession of problems at sea. A nearly new hydrogenerator failed, her Parasailor was destroyed, sargassum caused further difficulties and, most seriously, a suspected whale impact resulted in damage to the rudder and hull. James discusses managing those problems offshore and the importance of preparation, practical engineering knowledge and understanding the systems aboard your own yacht.  As James puts it, “Mid-Atlantic is no place to be unprepared.”  After arriving in Grenada, the problems weren't quite over. ARKYLA required two emergency haul-outs in December 2024 before undergoing significant hull repairs in early 2025. Yet the setbacks didn't end the adventure, and James was still able to explore the Windward Islands, including Grenada, Carriacou, St Vincent and the Grenadines, St Lucia and Martinique.  But this isn't simply a story about things going wrong at sea. James and Alan also discuss why the Regina 43 has worked so well as a bluewater cruising yacht, the modifications made during James's ownership, sailing as a couple, choosing and preparing a yacht for serious offshore cruising, and some of the lessons accumulated along the way. Photography has also become an important part of James's life aboard ARKYLA. His sailing photography and writing have received numerous awards, including Cruising Association Photo of the Year and Hanson Trophy honours, World Cruising Club ARC+ Best Photo Blog awards, and recognition from the International Cruisers Awards. ARKYLA herself even appeared on the cover of the 2025 Cruising Association Handbook.  From quiet anchorages and spectacular ocean skies to equipment failures, orca encounters, emergency repairs and the reality of crossing an ocean in your own yacht, this is an honest conversation about taking sailing beyond home waters. And, with ARKYLA now back with Berthon and offered for sale, it's also the closing chapter of one adventure, and perhaps the beginning of another.

🌊 7 Beaufort mit einer 3,94-Meter-Jolle – das kann nicht immer gutgehen… 😅 Bei unserem Törn mit der Topaz Magno auf der Ostsee wurden aus sportlichem Segeln schnell jede Menge Kenterungen. Starker, böiger Wind, bis zu ca. 1,5 Meter Welle und eine kleine Gleitjolle mit zwei Erwachsenen an Bord. Mehrfach konnten wir die Magno wieder aufrichten – manchmal kenterte sie direkt danach wieder. The YOT 53 is the first inboard power catamaran from YOT, and it feels like a 60 footer. Brad Kauffman and Steve Varrow walk every inch of her at Cannes. The YOT 53 carries over the ideas that worked on the Bali range: the tilting aft door that opens the salon to the cockpit, the full-size galley fridge, and the midline bulkhead moved aft so the interior runs uninterrupted from stern to bow. Then it adds a flybridge covering nearly 70% of the boat, twin Yanmar shaft drives, and joystick docking that spins her 360 degrees in her own length. What you'll see in this walkthrough: the forward U-shaped galley that takes up a third of the interior, with electric cooking and a 32-bottle wine fridge. The full-beam owner's suite with 6'6" of headroom, a dry head separate from the shower, and direct access to a private bow terrace. Guest and VIP cabins where every shower is full size, which is not how 53-foot power cats are usually laid out. The flybridge with its own cooktop, ice maker and refrigerator, seating up to twelve. Pop-up capstan winches that drop flush into the deck. A hydraulic swim platform that also gets guests with mobility issues into the water, and a 500 kg crane for tenders over 12 foot. Up to 5,000 watts of Solbian solar, cut from a digital print of the boat. Both helms, with every control mirrored. Comprare la barca giusta significa valutare utilizzo, budget, costi di gestione, dimensioni, accessori e futura rivendibilità. In questa Nautica in Pillole vediamo perché alcuni consigli, anche se dati in buona fede, possono portare a scelte sbagliate e costose. Uno dei più comuni è: “Compra questa barca, è la migliore!”. Il consiglio di un amico o di un altro armatore può essere molto utile quando racconta la propria esperienza. Il problema nasce quando un'esperienza personale viene trasformata in una verità assoluta. Una barca perfetta per una persona potrebbe non esserlo per un'altra. Anche il marchio della barca deve essere valutato in base alle proprie esigenze. Un brand molto conosciuto e richiesto in una determinata zona potrebbe esserlo molto meno altrove. Se pensi anche alla futura rivendibilità della barca usata, conoscere il mercato nautico della zona in cui probabilmente la venderai può fare la differenza. Meglio comprare una barca grande o piccola? “Prendila più grande!” è un altro consiglio da valutare con attenzione. Una barca più grande offre sicuramente maggiore spazio e comfort, ma comporta generalmente anche maggiori costi di gestione, manutenzione, ormeggio e utilizzo. Potresti trovare una barca usata più grande che rientra perfettamente nel tuo budget di acquisto, ma questo non significa che sia economicamente adatta a te. Una barca usata mantiene costi di gestione legati alle sue dimensioni e, con l'età, può richiedere anche più interventi di manutenzione. Vale però anche il contrario. Comprare una barca troppo piccola soltanto perché qualcuno ti dice che “così spendi poco” potrebbe significare rinunciare proprio agli spazi e alle caratteristiche che desideravi. Sailing off the coast of Borneo on a windswept, moonless night, a strange boat crosses our bow then does a u-turn onto a course to intercept us. We turn away and they turn with us. We start our engine to speed up and they increase speed as well. In daylight hours, we’ve got used to curious fisherman angling in towards us to have a closer look at our boat, wave and shout friendly greetings across the water, but tonight in the darkness, this was different. This boat was on an actual collision course. Were they dangerous brigands or just more curious fishermen? We had no way of knowing and could not take any risks so squeezed every ounce of speed out of our 42 year old yacht she could muster. It was touch and go for quite a while before we gained enough of a lead that our mystery pursuers gave up the chase and turned away. ►► Unveiled as a world premiere at the Cannes Yachting Festival, the Aquila 35 Sport joins the new Sport range as the American builder’s smallest model. ►Replacing the 36 Sport, this 35'6" (10.82 m) powercat adopts the muscular styling of the 45 Sport and its twin-step hull. Its 14'9" (4.5 m) beam still allows for three separate social areas: a forward lounge, helm station and spacious aft cockpit. ►The latter incorporates some of the cleverest features. The entire U-shaped bench seat slides electrically from port to starboard, either opening up a wide passageway or limiting access to just one side – practical with young children. Its adjustable backrest can also be used to create a huge sunpad, perfect for a nap or some well-earned rest after drinks! A wet bar and galley unit complete the setup. ►Forward, the lounge accommodates four people, with small cushions positioned along the sides to provide comfortable back support. The same attention to detail can be found at the helm station, with four seats featuring flip-up bolsters and a proper footrest. Below deck, a cabin with a king-size bed and separate bathroom makes it possible to spend a few nights aboard. An optional lithium battery pack notably allows the air conditioning to be used at anchor. ►The twin-step hull comes with twin 300 hp Mercury Verado V8s as standard or optional twin 400 hp Mercury Verado V10s. Here are a few tips I would give to anyone wanting to cruise full time. Here is our budget for a family of four and ways you can save money and do it too.

► It took four years of development for the Whisper project to finally become a reality. Presented as a world premiere at the Cannes Yachting Festival, hull #1 even grew along the way: initially designed as a 50-footer, the powercat gained extra length at the aft platform at the request of its Owner and now measures 52 feet… before growing to 54 feet for future units. ► On board, it is undoubtedly the main living area that makes the greatest impression. The vast aft cockpit can remain completely open or be enclosed thanks to large sliding side windows and, above all, an aft window that raises electrically. Once everything is closed, the cockpit, U-shaped galley and immense saloon form a single interior space, while retaining the dining table aft. It is a particularly convincing layout and partly explains the feeling of volume offered by the main deck.
