We're taking on one of the most notorious stretches of water in the United States — Cape Hatteras! After some last-minute maintenance and final preparations in Cape Charles, Virginia, we set off on a 230-mile, 33-hour offshore passage around Cape Hatteras, a place infamous for dangerous seas, unpredictable weather, and countless shipwrecks. But we got lucky! The weather was almost TOO calm. With barely enough wind to fill our sails, we ended up motoring through one of the most feared stretches of coastline on the East Coast. After 33 hours at sea, we finally arrive in Beaufort, North Carolina, where we tie up, stretch our legs, and let the dogs enjoy some much-needed time on land! Ficamos presos em Carneiros, em Pernambuco! ⛵ Entramos com a maré de lua, que proporcionava profundidade suficiente para o nosso veleiro Cabana, mas, quando a maré baixou, percebemos que não tínhamos profundidade para sair com segurança, considerando o nosso calado de 1,95 m. E agora? Só nos restava esperar a próxima mudança da lua! 😂 Enquanto o Cabana aguardava a maré certa, aproveitamos tudo o que esse paraíso do litoral pernambucano tem a oferecer: piscinas naturais, praias incríveis, passeios pelos bancos de areia e nossas cachorras correndo livres pelas ilhazinhas que aparecem na maré baixa. Também rolou churrasco a bordo de um catamarã com amigos, muita praia e momentos especiais da nossa vida a bordo. Mas nem tudo foi tranquilidade: mostramos também o incidente com outro veleiro que começou a garrar durante a ancoragem. Quando a profundidade finalmente melhorou, chegou a hora de deixar Carneiros para trás. Só que a saída ainda exigiu atenção, porque a maré continuava baixa! E a aventura não terminou por aí. We continue our sail down the Pacific coast of Baja California from Isla Cedros to Cabo San Lucas. Along the way we have close encounters with some whales, get surrounded by wildlife and enjoy the quietness of the remote anchorages. Five hundred miles offshore, making our way across the Atlantic aboard Osprey, and we've encountered a weather system that's forcing us to reconsider our routing options. Every routing solution seems determined to send us hundreds of miles north, some almost as far as St. John's, Newfoundland, adding perhaps five hundred unnecessary miles to our passage. The problem is that the routing software is missing one very important option: the ability to stop. So that's exactly what we've done. With winds of thirty-five to forty knots, we've stopped the boat and settled into a much more comfortable and stable situation. Instead of pushing the boat and crew through difficult conditions, we're allowing the weather to move through while we take the opportunity to rest, attend to personal equipment, catch up on small jobs and recover some energy. We'll probably spend around twelve hours like this. When we get moving again, the crew will be refreshed, the boat will have avoided unnecessary punishment, and the weather should allow us to pick up a much more direct route towards Lanzarote, closer to the great circle. We also take a look around below decks and discuss our freshwater arrangements. Osprey's original water tanks are showing their age, with scale and contamination concerns making them unsuitable for drinking water. It's another practical challenge of operating an older offshore racing yacht, and one that requires careful management. But the bigger message of this episode is about seamanship. Knowing when and how to stop a sailing boat is every bit as important as knowing how to make it go fast. Whether that's heaving to, lying ahull or deploying a parachute sea anchor, the appropriate method depends on the boat and the conditions. Understanding those options, practising them and knowing how your own boat behaves can make an enormous difference when difficult weather arrives. Stopping isn't necessarily losing time. Sometimes it's the most efficient route forward. And perhaps more importantly, it gives both the boat and the people aboard the opportunity to recover, physically and psychologically, before continuing the voyage. In this episode, we're getting ready to take Osprey across the Atlantic, and I wanted to share three different perspectives on what goes into preparing an 80-foot racing yacht and her crew for a major offshore passage. We begin with footage of our departure from Fairhaven, Massachusetts, and a look around Osprey at the end of our second day at sea. I also talk through the weather situation we were facing before departure. With a powerful northeasterly weather pattern complicating our plans and the Gulf Stream to cross within the first 36 hours, choosing the right departure window was far from straightforward. It's a good illustration of how much thought goes into the decisions we make before we even leave the dock. Next, we go aboard for some crew safety training. I take everyone through their life jackets, with particular attention to personal AIS man-overboard beacons, how they work, and why understanding your own equipment is so important. It's a fairly detailed session and gives you a genuine feel for what training with me aboard Osprey is like. We don't just tick boxes. We explore the equipment, ask questions, and make sure everyone understands what they're carrying and how it might save their life. Finally, we go back to the evening before departure. The crew have headed off for dinner, and I take you on a walk around the boat to inspect the extraordinary amount of work everyone has been doing. One of the challenges of preparing a boat like Osprey is that so many people are working on different systems simultaneously. There's tremendous energy and enthusiasm, but somebody has to keep the whole picture together. As skipper, I need to understand every change, every installation, and every job that's been completed. Many of the improvements people are making today will travel thousands of miles with Osprey, potentially all the way around the world. That's a wonderful thing, but it also comes with responsibility. My job is to bring all those individual efforts together, tidy up the loose ends, and make sure we leave with a boat that's organised, understood, and ready for sea. It's a little glimpse into the less glamorous, but absolutely essential, side of offshore sailing: weather decisions, safety training, teamwork, and the quiet responsibility of knowing your boat. Dang, dang, dang!!! Isabella’s packing gland needs to be adjusted and our journey to Texas is now delayed. Steve’s been soaking the lock nut for the packing gland so that it can be loosened easily. The issue is that should that break or there start to be a leak; a whole lot of water would come rushing in and potentially sink the boat. Our current marina would be unable to pull us out of the water if that emergency situation should arise. We have an appointment at a larger marina early next week. Hopefully, this can be done quickly with Isabella still in the water and we can set another departure date soon. It’s not the Atlantic but we did take the dinghy out on the water. Karen pumped up the three chambers. It was great that the Mercury outboard started right up and out we went. Steve even revved the motor enough that we caused a small wake. Very small. On the starboard side of Isabella, we have a composite board support for jerry cans. After buying a few more cans, we added support on the port side. It’s pressure treated wood and may only be a temporary addition. However, now all the extra fuel can be safely secured onboard. We are taking the extra few days to locate additional anchorages and marinas with fuel docks that are accessible along the way on our move to Texas. Many of the channels are deep enough for us to navigate but sometimes the area getting to them is too shallow. Additionally, many of the anchorages and marina approaches are too shallow. Isabella has a 7-foot draft and we like to have at least 9 to 10 feet of water under her. We live aboard S/V Isabella, a Super Mikado 56 built in France by C.N.S.O. (Constructions Nautiques du Sud-Ouest). Isabella is a 1990/2010 sailing ketch with four private cabins, an engine room, a salon, a galley, and three heads with two separate shower stalls. Her fiberglass hull is designed for bluewater cruising, with an excellent capsize ratio of 1.68 and a very good comfort ratio of 42.19. She is equipped with Garmin and Raymarine electronics and hydraulic steering. Isabella was designed by naval architect Michel Bigoin, who also designed Phocea. Built in 1976, the 246-foot, four-masted steel schooner was considered the world’s largest private sailing yacht until 2004. Where did everybody go?! We're back in beautiful Warm Springs Bay on Baranof Island in Southeast Alaska, and something is very different this time. Just a few weeks ago, the docks were packed with boats and people enjoying the hot springs. Now, we've practically got the whole place to ourselves! And we can't quite figure out why everyone leaves when it's still so beautiful here. We spend nine wonderful days aboard Alaskan Gypsy, enjoying the quiet fall season, soaking in the public hot tubs overlooking the bay, hiking through the rainforest, searching for blueberries, and visiting the incredible natural hot springs beside a roaring river. We also take our little skiff exploring through a narrow, rocky passage into a sheltered bay. With the tide dropping, we have to keep an eye on the water if we want to make it back out! There's plenty of rain, a little sunshine, some beautiful scenery, and lots of laughs along the way. We love exploring Southeast Alaska outside the busy summer season, and Warm Springs Bay is one of those places that keeps drawing us back.
