My father’s story comes to an end. After his move to the VA center, I visited him on Father’s Day — not knowing it would be the last time we would spend that day together. Not long afterward, I sat with my father through his final hours and stayed with him until he died. This video is a collection of those final moments: his move to the VA, my last visit with him, the hours I spent at his bedside, and highlights from his funeral, including the military honors he received for his service to our country in the Korean War. My father is gone. That chapter is over. Life has laid a foundation these past 4 years and has now released me into the freedom to amplify my Starting Over journey. ► Following the much-noticed launch of the Aquila 50 Sail in Miami last February (with 50 units already sold!), the American builder is pressing ahead with its expansion into sailing catamarans. ► Presented as a world premiere at the Cannes Yachting Festival, the 45 Sail is the second model in this new range, complementing an offering that until now had been exclusively dedicated to powercats. A third model, the 65 Sail, has already been announced for 2028. ► In Cannes, we were able to discover a very well-finished catamaran that, unsurprisingly, adopts the main features of the 50 Sail: a vast aft cockpit, a genuine flybridge and, above all, direct access between the flybridge and foredeck (on the starboard side), with the traditional trampoline replaced by a solid area featuring a bench seat and sunpad. The flybridge accommodates five people around a U-shaped bench seat, while the aft cockpit can seat eight around the table and also features a bar and barbecue/griddle area. Zum Start und auf der Kreuz nach Wilhelmshöhe gab es Wind mit bis zu 30 Knoten und dann kam auch noch Regen dazu ... Die Segelyachten zeigten sich hiervon unbeeindruckt und absolvierten den bekannten Kurs zur Reedetonne und zurück zum Leuchtturm noch vor dem nächsten Schauer. Da der Sieger von letzter Woche - SY Silence - sich entschieden hatte, Crew und Material für das am Wochenende bevorstehende Blaue Band der Warnow zu schonen, zahlten sich die vielen Tauchgänge und auch die sonstige unermüdliche Bootspflegearbeit des Skippers von SY Monk aus und er führte den wie immer frisch polierten Rumpf (der Yacht) als erstes über die Ziellinie. Ansonsten sind Parallelen zur letzten Woche zu erkennen. Die Sonne versteckt sich immer hartnäckiger hinter den Wolken und die Nacht nimmt wieder einen deutlich größeren Teil unseres Lebens ein ... der Herbst ist da.

In Episode 31 of UK Sailmakers' Lessons Learned, host Buttons Padin catches up with Tripp Brower, executive director of Apparent Winds, aboard the 75 foot aluminum ketch Resilience in Mo'orea, French Polynesia, just in from Fakarava in the Tuamotus. Tripp explains how Apparent Winds grew from a planned two year circumnavigation into a 10 year expedition focused on collecting and sharing stories of community led environmental and cultural preservation, and on making "affordable science" possible by offering researchers low cost access to a capable sailing platform and accessible tools like a 6,000 meter drop camera. He traces the route from Maine to Grenada, across the Caribbean to Panama, out through French Polynesia, the Cook Islands, Samoa and Tonga to New Zealand, and back north this season through the Marquesas and the Tuamotus, with relationship building as the foundation for the work. Tripp covers the partnership behind the 12.5 million square kilometre Moananui Sanctuary, a NOAA research charter in American Samoa this October focused on coral, and introduces the crew. He also gets into how the ketch rig is handled shorthanded, his passage making advice ("don't sink" and "leave the dock"), and what is next: a refit in Whangarei, New Zealand, and a separate Chile to Antarctica expedition.
