In October 1955, the Joyita, a 69-foot motor yacht chartered for a routine supply run, set sail from Samoa for the Tokelau Islands with 25 people aboard. She was an incredibly sturdy, oak and cedar ship packed with five inches of solid cork insulation—making her physically incapable of sinking. When the ship failed to arrive, a massive aerial search yielded nothing. But five weeks later, the Joyita was discovered 600 miles off course, flooded and heavily listed, yet perfectly afloat. Her life rafts were missing, all 25 souls had vanished without a trace, and the eerily preserved crime scene included frozen clocks, bloodstained bandages, and a severed radio wire. Two come from Amels, while VANISH was built by Feadship, and all three were delivered within a year of each other. On paper they may appear relatively similar, but once David starts comparing their volume, layouts, deck spaces and prices, three very different yachts emerge. At 1,790 GT, SYNTHESIS already offers substantial volume, with VANISH close behind at 1,728 GT. But ENERGY moves into another category at an extraordinary 2,885 GT, giving her more than 1,000 GT of additional volume compared with SYNTHESIS despite being only a little over three metres longer. That difference becomes particularly interesting when looking at how each yacht uses its space. SYNTHESIS has six decks and an impressive dedicated Owner’s Deck, with a forward-facing Owner’s Stateroom overlooking a plunge pool, his-and-hers bathrooms, an office, private lounge and outside dining area with a bar. VANISH has five decks and takes a very different approach. Her substantial sundeck includes a plunge pool, bar, gym and dining area, as well as one of her most unusual features: one of two helipads on board. Then there is ENERGY, where everything seems to get a little bigger. Her Owner’s Deck includes a forward-facing suite overlooking a plunge pool, while aft there is dining, sunbathing space and a full swimming pool. Further down, the differences continue. SYNTHESIS offers an impressive spa with a shell door opening directly onto the ocean, while VANISH features a beautiful beach club and considerable space dedicated to crew. ENERGY takes the wellness concept even further. Her spa includes a hammam, sauna, massage room, beauty salon, relaxation area, substantial gym and a fold-down sea terrace. By placing the engine room down on the tank deck, Amels freed up considerable volume for this remarkable area. How do they compare? After days of nonstop rain, we finally get some sunshine and make the most of it! 🌴☀️ In this episode, we start with a few cosmetic boat jobs we’ve been putting off while waiting for the weather to improve. Then we set sail through Bocas del Toro, Panama, heading to Dolphin Bay Yacht Club to check out one of the popular cruising spots on the islands and meet some of the people who call this beautiful part of Panama home. From there, we sail to Starfish Beach on Isla Colón, where the weather finally turns picture perfect. One year ago, we started living aboard Alaskan Gypsy full time in Alaska. At almost exactly the same time, we started sharing that life here on YouTube. We had no idea what either one would become. In our first year aboard our 80-foot steel schooner, we've worked to bring Gypsy back to life, spent an Alaska winter living aboard, found work in remote communities, tackled unusual rescue and repair projects, crossed the Gulf of Alaska, explored forgotten places and met some incredible people along the way. And somehow, we made 155 videos while doing it. For our one-year anniversary, we're looking back at 10 videos that defined our first year. These aren't necessarily our 10 biggest videos. They're the ones that changed something for us, surprised us, opened a new door or helped us understand what we want The Alaskan Gypsy Life to become. We go back to our first time aboard Gypsy and the months spent working on her in the Wrangell shipyard. Then Port Protection changed everything. We began figuring out how living and working from the boat could actually become a sustainable life, and some of the projects we stumbled into became stories we never could have planned. From a remote cabin rescue and a broken excavator to Alaska treasure hunting, crossing the Gulf of Alaska and meeting Nikki, who has lived aboard alone in Alaska for more than four decades, each of these videos represents a piece of what this life has become. Looking back, maybe that's the biggest thing we've discovered: we're not living our lives for YouTube. We're living this strange, beautiful Alaskan life and sharing the stories we find along the way. My hardtop project update covers the final stages of the build. See the completed fiberglass work and the new electrical panel installation. The fiberglass work is finally finished, marking a major milestone for this custom build. I have wrapped up all the necessary design changes and error corrections that caused recent delays, ensuring the structure is solid before moving forward. Installing a custom hardtop requires patience, but seeing these components come together makes the extra time worth it. Getting the electrical panel set up properly is a critical step to ensure the electronics function reliably once the hardtop is completed. I thought my liferaft was my last line of defence. Then I had it inspected at a certified Lalizas service station in Mauritius — and I got the shock of my life. The liferaft had become completely unusable. Luckily, I had arranged the inspection in time. Because the liferaft was still under warranty, Lalizas sent a replacement liferaft from Europe. But getting a liferaft to Mauritius isn't as simple as putting it on a plane. Due to the compressed gas cylinder and pyrotechnics, transporting it by air is not possible. Fortunately, Bosss Marine in Mauritius was able to help. They replaced the cylinder and flares locally, making it possible to get my safety equipment back in order. This experience was a serious reminder: don't assume your liferaft is ready just because it is sitting on your boat. Have it professionally inspected before you actually need it. 💙 Love my videos? Seven Champions Crowned in the 2026 RORC Cowes Offshore Series Seven category champions have been crowned after the 2026 RORC Cowes Offshore Series brought nearly 150 boats together for a season of accessible, high-quality offshore racing from Cowes. Venomous, L’Ange de Milon, Bulldog, Bellino and Zanzibar claimed the five IRC class titles, while Slinky Malinki won the Multihull division under MOCRA and Swift topped Class40. Running from 2 May – 6 September, the Series combined seven established RORC races: the Cervantes Trophy, Myth of Malham, De Guingand Bowl, Salcombe Gin Morgan Cup, Cowes Dinard St Malo Race, Channel Race and Nautical Cloud Cherbourg Race. The best five results counted towards each boat’s final score. The fleet ranged from a Contessa 32 to a Volvo 70, bringing Grand Prix campaigns, experienced offshore teams, youth crews and Corinthian sailors into the same programme. With most races starting on Saturday morning and finishing in time for crews to return home on Sunday, the format delivered serious offshore competition without demanding a full week away from work and plenty of fun both afloat and at the RORC Cowes Clubhouse. Graeme Lewis’ Carroll Marine 60 Venomous won IRC Zero, ahead of James Neville’s Botin 52 Ino Veritas and Guy Gillon’s Botin 56 Khumbu. IRC One produced a close contest. Jacques Pelletier’s French prototype L’Ange de Milon finished just 16.7 points ahead of Trevor Middleton’s JPK 1180 Black Sheep. Nick and Jacquetta Edmonds’ J/45 Stickleback completed the class podium. RORC Vice Commodore Derek Shakespeare, racing his J/122 Bulldog was the clear winner in IRC Two. Jean-Eudes Renier’s Pogo RC Midnight Blues was second, with Richard Powell’s First 40 Rogan Josh third. Rob Craigie’s Sun Fast 3600 Bellino, raced with RORC Commodore Deb Fish, won a deep IRC Three. Ian Hoddle’s Sun Fast 3300 Game On was second and Fujitsu British Soldier, campaigned by the Army Sailing Association, placed third. In IRC Four, Inka Luhrs and Richard Bretherton’s Sun Fast 3200 Zanzibar scored won by 25 points from Mark Brown’s JPK 1010 Jetpack. Rob Cotterill’s J/109 Mojo Risin completed the top three. The closest title fight came in the Multihull division. Peter Coote’s Dazcat 1295 Slinky Malinki defeated Didier Bouillard’s Minor Swing, another Dazcat 1295, by just 6.3 points. Dave Summers’ Dazcat 1495 DMS Vinyl was third. Greg Leonard’s Swift won Class 40, ahead of Nicolas Lemarchand’s Weeecycling. For several teams, the Series formed the opening part of a two-year campaign towards the 2027 Rolex Fastnet Race. It also gave the RORC Griffin Pathway’s under-30 crew responsibility for planning, preparing and racing its own campaign, building skills on and off the water. Multiple Griffin teams raced the club’s Sun Fast 3600 RORC Griffin, giving an extended squad valuable experience. RORC Commodore Deb Fish said the racing and the atmosphere ashore were equally important: “The more you put in, the more you get out. The more you come to the post-race parties, the more you chat with your competitors, the more you learn, the faster you go and the more likely you are to win next year.
