The Pace has picked up under kites off Vendee coast, Bonafous in charge. As a grey dawn broke over the Vendée coast this morning some 55 miles out to sea the 31 Figaros are making good speeds in 15 knot NW’ly winds, the fleet making a good descent of the Bay of Biscay now. After yesterday sailing close to the Finistere rocks to extricate themselves from the clutches of an anticyclonic ridge now they are gybing downwind towards the turning mark which is just less than 100 miles in front of them which they should reach this evening, between 2100hrs and midnight. Élodie Bonafous (Quéguiner-La Vie en Rose) is holding firm at the top of the fleet. She is going well, having led now for the best part of 24 hours and is on good company the top ten to Guillaume Pirouelle (Région Normandy) are within a 3-mile radius. Ireland’s Tom Dolan (Smurfit Kappa-Kingspan) is sixth. As for the three main contenders for the final podium of this 54th edition they are all close on the water, the advantage being held by GC leader Basile Bourgnon (Edenred) and third placed Loïs Berrehar (Skipper Macif 2022) are within 1.3 miles of each other. And second overall Corentin Horeau (Banque Populaire) is 1.3 miles behind them. Leader Élodie Bonafous (Quéguiner - La Vie en Rose) said this morning, “It’s going pretty well and the ranking is pretty good. But you have to be careful because the race track is wide in the Bay of Biscay and I don't really know where my rivals are. I managed to rest. I am under a big spinnaker; and the wind picked up enough to add the genoa. I slide along well at an average of 8.5 knots. By VMG gybing to get to the mark in front of us we try to stay in phase with the wind to make the approach. I see a good part of the fleet to benchmark myself, but I don't know where some of them have gone, I imagine them more in the east. But my speed is pretty good and that’s nice. It has never happened to me to be in the lead for so long, it’s nice. Despite the pressure, I manage to do things methodically, without being influenced by my position. We should keep this wind steady; but the big question I have about the upcoming weather is whether there will be any thermal breeze effects on land to play with during the day.” Third placed overall, Loïs Berrehar (Skipper Macif 2022) said : “I slept well last night, and it’s not bad compared to last night when it wasn’t at all the same atmosphere; and yesterday after going through the rocks, I was really burnt out. We are progressing in a well-established northwesterly flow, gybing downwind. Let's say that it's easier to go on autopilot and make your life on board, than when you're in the flow and your progress depends on the slightest puff. It's nice to take out the spinnaker, it reminds me of the Transat (Paprec, which Loïs won.) We still have gybes to do, good positioning in the wind variations too; it's nice. Above all, I try to get the right tacks, and to play my game as best as possible to get to Arcachon as quickly as possible. I look at the chart of course, and at my rivals who are sailing well; but no more than usual. We are still far from the finish, I try not to think about the general classification. I don't want to get too far ahead of myself, but we should be able to get to the next mark by the end of the day today.

Mit unserer Topaz Magno geht’s noch einmal raus in die Kieler Bucht – direkt vor dem Olympiahafen Kiel-Schilksee. Bei 4 Beaufort und ablandigem Wind erleben wir ein richtig agiles kleines Sportboot. Die Magno ist mit nur ca. 3,94 m Länge, 1,56 m Breite und rund 95 kg Rumpfgewicht ein echtes Leichtgewicht. Das Großsegel ca. 8 m², die Fock rund 2 m² und der Gennaker ca. 10–11 m² machen die Jolle perfekt, um das Gennaker-Segeln zu üben – aber eben auch ziemlich kippelig. Das spüren wir sofort: die ersten Kenterungen lassen nicht lange auf sich warten. Insgesamt werden es 6 Kenterungen – jedes Mal schnell aufrichten, Wasser rausfahren und weiter geht’s. Genau das macht den Reiz aus: wenig Trägheit, direktes Lenkverhalten und jede kleine Gewichtsverlagerung spürt man sofort. Wenn die Magno ins Gleiten kommt, spielt die klassische Rumpfgeschwindigkeit von ca. 9 km/h keine Rolle mehr – mit Gennaker und genug Wind kommen wir zeitweise auf 16 km/h und mehr. Für Einsteiger ist die Magno aufgrund ihrer Stabilität beim Aufrichten perfekt zum Lernen geeignet – aber man muss aktiv segeln und Gewicht trimmen! Wir segeln Höhe, üben Wenden, fahren lange Schläge und probieren Manöver im Trapez. Dabei wechseln wir Rollen: mal steuert einer nur mit der Pinne, mal bedienen wir Großsegel und Fock gemeinsam. Honey Fitz, named after President John F. Kennedy's maternal grandfather, who was mayor of Boston, was the eighth Presidential Yacht. She was built in 1931 as Lenore by Defoe Shipbuilding in the Great Lakes for Sewell Avery, chairman of Montgomery Ward. At 92 feet, she has one cabin. Mr. Avery obviously used the boat exclusively for entertainment purposes. Moores Marine specializes in antique and classic wooden boat restorations and is documenting the project week by week.

24 sailors with adaptive needs gathered in Oyster Bay for the third annual Clagett/Oakcliff Match Race Clinic and Regatta. The WaterFront Center donated their Sonars for use in the regatta and Warrior Sailing Program rigged them with the adaptive equipment. Sagamore Yacht Club generously offered their facilities and docks for the regatta. Five-time US Match Racing Champion Dave Perry and America’s Cup legend Dave Dellenbaugh gave the competitors a crash course on match racing from the basics all the way through to advanced penalty skills. The practice day was a case of practicing what they were taught and the first day of the regatta executing these skills.

Anilao is easily one of the best places in the world for macro photography as well as blackwater diving, and now bonfire diving. Bonfire diving is a relatively new experience offered to divers. Rather than venture out into the deep black water, suspended by a tether to the bottom of the drifting boat (think pelagic magic in Hawaii) usually quite a distance from shore above a mile+ deep trench, bonfire dives are quite the opposite. You pick a location with little current, in about 35-40 feet of water and suspend a bright light system from a mooring line. This serves as the attraction for the plankton which is drawn to the light and brings lots of critters to you. The challenging part, as a diver, is to remain suspended at around 20 feet, typically 20-25 feet away from the lights with no landscape to help with your bearing. At times I followed critters to 38 feet and up to the surface! The plankton is moving at incredible speeds and it's difficult to hover, hold a light just enough to illuminate but not burn out the subject and hold a camera steady to capture video. It's truly a miracle that as many video segments turned out and were more or less in focus. Brown did an INCREDIBLE job slowing down most of the critters by 90% so that you can actually experience their outer spaciness! Make sure and watch the end of the video where he gives you his GoPro Hero 7 underwater settings that he used to capture the bonfire dive video. This week we get the boat prepared for the trip from New Orleans to SW Florida. It was a lot of work and candidly I didn't have the camera out the whole time. I relied heavily on using footage from our security cameras, plus the new ones we got however the new ones didn't have something set right and I missed a lot of the footage. Needless to say, I am not too happy about that. But, the good news is we got a lot of work done, from general good planning passage prep like oil change, filter changes, topping off, and securing extra fluids. We changed the impeller, cleaned all sea strainers, and double-checked all hoses and connections below the waterline. For any sailor, catastrophic hull failure is bad enough. But when you're in the middle of the ocean in rough seas—sailing alone—with no help around for miles....It's life or death. On December 1st, 24 days into the 2020 Vendée Globe around-the-world race, Kevin Escoffier's 2009 IMOCA 60 was sailing along in strong winds and big seas 840 nautical miles SW of Cape Town when suddenly.... "The boat folded up on a wave at 27 knots. I heard a bang, but to be honest, I didn’t need to hear that to know what had happened. I looked at the bow. It was at 90°. In a few seconds, there was water everywhere. The stern was under water and the bow was pointing up to the sky. The boat split in half in front of the mast bulkhead. It was as if she folded up. I promise. I’m not exaggerating. There was an angle of 90° between the stern and the bow.” Kevin had only moments to act. His first move was to send a message to his team: "I’m sinking… I’m not joking. MAYDAY." Then he was alone in a survival suit in the middle of the ocean. The yacht, PRB? Sunken. "Like a shipwreck," Kevin said.
