In this episode of the Art of Boat Building I continue to fair the hull of the Haven 12 1/2. I use Total Boat fairing compound to fill the heads of the bronze screws. In addition a die grinder is used to fair the White Oak wood keel to the hull. Much hand sanding, with a long board is in order to sand the epoxy fairing compound and the hull for a final sanding of the Atlantic White Cedar. We get one step closer to being ready to caulk the seams with cotton caulking. “If you’re going to make it, make it beautiful.” -Bob Emser- Subscribe for more Boat Building from The Art of Boat Building: https://www.youtube.com/user/bobemser/featured?sub_confirmation=1 Share this video with a friend: https://youtu.be/Jr70IOmyrUE How to support The Art of Boat Building. Points of Sailing - Part 3 of 5: Reaching is the term that applies to several points of sail. All of which are when you are sailing across the wind. Reaching is sailing at its fastest so understanding how to set the sails is a key skill to learn. Watch the other parts in the sequence to understand the other points of sail.

How to juice the tropical pandanus fruits to make healthy juices and delicious cocktails! Filmed in the Marshall Islands in 2011.
We are about to set sail on our longest sail yet and with hurricane season quickly approaching and nasty low-pressure systems still making their way to the tropics we have to pick our departure day very carefully. I'm scared, but I know we have the experience and are fully capable of this passage. We just hope mother nature takes it easy on us and our boat! Do you want your very own Tula gear? After some encounters with some very large boat breaking waves, we are feeling the impact of the forces of mother nature. We are days away from land, are we prepared to overcome these challenges? #sailing #adventure #explore Offshore sailing is all about preperation. One must be prepared to overcome any challenges without support from anyone else. When you are alone, thousands of miles from help, in the middle of crossing the Pacific Ocean, you must fix things yourself. You must also be mentally prepared for this, you have no option but to push through any emotions and just get things done. Things have to get worse before they can better , Let the Repairs begin! https://www.sailingnandji.com/ This video was filmed early Febuary before the global pandemic really took off. Thailand was one of the first countries affected and we took the adequate precautions early to protect ourselves. If you would like to contribute towards Nandji's repairs please use this link. Thank you. http://paypal.me/SailingNandji If you are getting something out of our videos, please become a Patron to help support our production and adventures. Get Unseen footage, Exclusive vids and the inside scoop! http://www.patreon.com/Nandji In this episode of Sailing Nandji, we are in the boatyard after the worst night of our lives. A mooring we were on failed during a heavy squall in the night and Nandji ended up on the reef. We managed to save her and sail the 50nm back to the boat yard where we are here. After a week of red tape, we are finally able to get stuck into the repairs. I tell you, there is nothing quite like therapy with a grinder as I spend days on end grinding back the hull to expose the damage. With the damage visible the daunting task of cutting massive oles in the boat begins... With no sailing experience, we bought a yacht, got it blue water cruising ready and set off from Australia sailing to the Pacific! We have since cruised through New Caledonia, Vanuatu, the Solomon islands, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia and then onto the boat yard in Malaysia to prepare for the years to come. With a new engine, we continued onto Thailand, then back down into Indonesia and specifically West Sumatra to live the island life and chase the surf. With our Sailing plans changing, we returned to Thailand to wait for the weather and begin our journey to the northern route of the Indian Ocean to Sri Lanka before heading south across the Indian Ocean once cyclone season has finished and the trade winds begin! We were on our shake down sail when the mooring we were on failed on our home ended up on the reef. We saved the old girl and got her back to the boat yard for repairs to continue on our adventure! We departed the east coast of Australia in July 2017 and have since sailed over 10000nm offshore. We have explored some amazing countries and met some beautiful people along the way. We have experienced so many different and diverse cultures, dived pristine reefs, surfed solo in the middle of nowhere, spent weeks at sea, dealt with storms, big waves, strong winds and had the time of our lives doing it! The adventure is just beginning as we sail West with the trades around the World! Injuries on a sailboat can be a real show-stopper. So what we do to get fit and stay in shape is just as important as maintaining the boat. After a three day sail from Bora Bora we pulled into Aitutaki with plans to stay a month. Unfortunately for us, a new law had been passed that disallowed the use of tenders by any yacht inside the lagoon making our experience there rather short due to the cost of having to hire a tour operator every day. We did however get out to the kite island for a day and oh man, did we ever have fun! This place really is magic. Episode 407 : Season 13 : Sailing Indonesia Hello Friends, On this episode we navigate our way though the many unhidden dangers that come with poorly charted waters. Using satellite images as charts I plotted our course through the dangers using only the visual of the images and not traditional sea charts we usually use and trust. We arrived at an amazing unnamed cay in the Take Bonerate National Park and were treated to surreal scenes. On the 7th Dec 2019 we slipped our lines from Santa Cruz de Tenerife to spend 19 days at sea crossing the Atlantic Ocean. Our first ocean crossing, it was certainly one we will never forget. Sailing through the doldrums on our 37ft sailing yacht Florence is the first stage in our 3000 mile offshore passage across the Indian Ocean. The euphoria of setting off on our greatest challenge yet is tempered by the unpredictable ocean weather conditions we face. Sailing offshore 24 hours per day, part of our non-stop voyage from Indonesia to Seychelles. We have been sailing around the world for over 5 years after setting off from England in 2016 on board our 37ft sail boat Florence. In it's heyday this boat was beautiful. Unfortunately, she's not in such great shape today. This boat needs a complete refit, and totally refitting a 56 foot yacht is a HUGE undertaking that will cost an unimaginable amount of time and money. It's not something to be taken lightly. Aruba is the last of the ABC-island and now we have visited them all. We are planning and preparing for our passage to Colombia and since the passage is known for strong wind and high waves we decide to get going when we see a good weather window. But before sailing to Colombia we have time to meet a couple of Arubans, celebrate Malin's birthday and get stuck in a fishing net. We are a Swedish couple who wanted a different kind of life. So we moved aboard our sailboat RAN, a custom built aluminium Beason 40, untied the lines in the middle of the Swedish winter and started to sail south along the coast of Europe. There is no set route and we will go where the wind and our minds take us. WANT MORE? We all know that there are certain stains on a boat that are just downright difficult, if not impossible, to remove. The internet is full of boat cleaning tips for helping tackle those trouble spots. But some of those boat cleaning hacks are just plain dangerous. BoatUS Magazine's fishing and electronics editor, Lenny Rudow, shows you three helpful tips, hacks, and tricks for tackling the toughest stains on your boat: mildew stains on vinyl, dried fish blood, and hard water spots. Using some very basic cleaners available in your grocery store, like OxyClean, Bar Keepers Friend, and vinegar, and a little bit of elbow grease, you can restore your vinyl, scrub the decks, and keep those windshields sparkling. Prevention is your best friend, though, so make sure to put that coat of wax on the hull in the spring and seal your vinyl to prevent mold and mildew from forming. We are Ben and MP! Recently we decided to purchase a two-masted wooden schooner in Brazil. The fun detail about our story is that the boat we bought was sinking and relying on many bilge pumps to survive so we had to lift it onto the dry to start a full refit. Once the boat was lifted (for the first time in her life) we realized that the work needed was much more than expected. Between bailing or accepting the challenge, we decided to go for the second option. Check out our SWEET Site: http://bit.ly/gwtw-home ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- It’s the holidays. Gifts will be given and retailers know you’re lookin’ to buy. It’s Thanksgiving tomorrow, followed up by the craziness that is Black Friday, Cyber Monday and Sale-Sale-Sales. Which is why we suggest staying far, far away from any store for at least the next month. Unless you’re morbidly curious & just really, really want to fight the crowds to see what all the fuss is about. Here is our tried, tested & Santa approved tip when it comes to shopping for the perfect gift: Make a list & check it twice. Make a list of everyone you want to give gifts to, think of the perfect gift and write it next to their name. Voilà, if it’s not on the list, you don’t need it, so don’t buy it. Seriously. If you commit to your gift list, it can save you loads of cash and time. Some new and some oldies but they're all goodies. Hopefully, it helps spark some ideas or maybe you even found a few things to add to your personal wish list. All the items are listed out below with links and discount codes if we scored any. If your curiosity has been sparked but you still have questions, ask away in the comment box below. Here's what we cover in our Gift Guide video. These items are not paid sponsors and we weren't asked (or paid) by anyone to create this video...it's genuinely our opinions of products we own and love: 02:09 - Flexi-Bendy Tripod - Buy From GVB Gear & Get 15% off.
