Safe sailing. Boat: White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built. The camera gear: Main camera is a Panasonic Hc- V770 with a Rode External mic. My old camera is now my number 2 is a Panasonic Hc-v700. Most shots are done with an external mic (Shenggu sg 108) with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Action stuff and small blogging is done with a Sony Hdr-as30v. Underwater video Gopro3plus. Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff! There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access. Content: I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘bland and mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining. Comments and being at sea: I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. While Im out on the Ocean I have completely no communications with the outside World. We really enjoyed sailing around Ibiza and Formentera off season, but the weather can be changeable in November so in this episode we see another side of the Med. Strong winds, big seas combined with short days meant sailing back to mainland Spain from the Balearics was testing. The wind was strong enough to blow out our staysail and break the roller reefing on the Yankee but we still enjoyed our voyage back to Cartagena. Winter jobs on the boat begin, we talk to our neighbours about replacing their standing rigging and their amazing sailing and skiing lifestyle. We are retiring early because we want to attempt this voyage in good health and while we're fit and strong enough to really enjoy it. We will have to work a bit as we go until we can draw our pensions and we honestly don't know how well that will work. In our real lives we are journalists and filmmakers so it was only natural for use to document our travels by filming the journey. We aim to produce a professional standard vlog of the whole trip and try to give the viewer a real insight into what it's like to live and travel on a 48 foot sailboat. Our first aim is to sail South. After a winter getting iced in on the Markermeer in the Netherlands Judy insisted on warmer weather! So if you start from Episode 1 you will see us setting off from Eastbourne in the UK and travelling along the South Coast to Plymouth to enter a rally called ARC Portugal. Our first goal is to reach the Mediterranean and that means sailing across the infamous Bay of Biscay. This was a very good test for our boat as the bay lived up to it's fearsome reputation and split the whole fleet with a force 10 storm. Storm Miguel cut through our path and meant we had to run to mainland Spain to escape the massive seas and fearsome winds. Six boats couldn't make it in time and spent several very uncomfortable days at sea. The fleet had several broken boats, but thankfully no injured people. And this was just Episode 2! The excitement continued for the rest of our trip to the Med. Dolphins played in our bow wave, we sampled fantastic local foods and wines, great port in Porto! We found some beautiful anchorages and visit some wonderful historic places like Lisbon in Portugal, Cadiz in Spain and the fascinating port of Gibraltar. We will show you what it's like to winter in the Mediterranean, how much it all costs and give hints and tips on where to go how to save money with your boat and the places you stay. We are also talking to other sailors. After years of broadcasting journalism we know how to get peoples stories and we regularly film other sailors to show their boats and lifestyle as well as ours. We can always learn from others. Our long term plan is to spend a few years in the Mediterranean, on our list of place we want to visit are; Mallorca, Malta, Corsica, Sardinia, Sicily, Greece, Turkey, Croatia, Montenegro, Albania, Italy, Tunisia, to name but a few! When we feel we've seen the best of what the Med has to offer we will cross the Atlantic to the Caribbean, the Pacific and beyond! #sailingfairisle

She is the largest boat in the Robalo fleet with a nationally advertised price -- $39,765 with a Yamaha F150XA outboard, sans trailer. She has a front-opening head compartment, 15 gallon livewell in the leaning post, two 30-gallon fish boxes, and a clever foldaway transom seat that lifts up to access the electrical system and pumps. Like all Robalos, she has decent bow flare and a relatively high freeboard, which we like.

In this episode we're in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria, to work on the boat. This marina is famous for being a hub point for blue water sailors preparing to cross the Atlantic and since that's our case we try to get as much things done as we can. Fifty years later, a re-run of the Sunday Times Golden Globe looks set to make headlines once again as the first two skippers head towards the finish after 29,000 miles and over 200 days alone. We look back at this extraordinary event, as well as the race that started it all. We also find out what the next fully crewed race around the world will look like as race formerly known as the Volvo Ocean Race announces big changes ahead. Plus, the fastest cats in sailing get released into the wild as SailGP prepares for its inaugural event in Sydney. Stripping boat paint, especially bottom paint; Heat Gun? Stripper? sandblasting? Scraping? Chemical Stripper? grinding? This video is about removing old bottom paint from fiberglass boats and sailboats, and what method to use, and why. Stripping boat paint involves the right Power Tools- but which tool to use for a bottom job? ...preparing the bottom of a Sailboat for new antifouling paint or Coppercoat? First, we must remove the bottom paint and do a complete bottom job including new epoxy barrier coat to prep for antifouling. Patrick shows the power tools and hand tools he uses for maintenance and repairs as he begins the repair and restoration for a new kind of anti foul paint for us, diy. This is a “how to”, tutorial, sailboat restoration project; a do it yourself sailing video about prepping a sailboat for Coppercoat, antifouling, and how to remove bottom paint. It’s not easy to Do, but Patrick shows how to sand off bottom paint, how to remove bottom paint by using heat guns to take the old paint off a fiberglass hull, and why we couldn’t sandblast! Lots of boat work, and repairing the hull of all of these resin blisters. He also puts the headsail profurl Head stay back on, since it will take a while for sailboat maintenance this time! Sailboat restoration and renovation in Africa! WARNING: WARNING WARNING Using a heat gun to remove bottom paint is questionable, and you should do research yourself if this is the best method to remove antifouling paint from your sailboat. Damage to underlying gelcoat is a Concern, as is the carcinogenic fumes that are created when bottom paint is heated. When fiberglass is heated, it can do damage. Removal with the lowest possible heat is preferable. Working with a very helpful local company in Capetown, and Durban, South Africa called ”AMT Composites” (https://www.amtcomposites.co.za), we are now choosing the proper fiberglass and epoxy materials to build the fiberglass layers up again. Our power tools are being repaired by a local company that fixes our tools almost as fast as we break them: http://www.baypowertools.co.za/ We will get this boat ready for our next Ocean, to continue sailing around the world on our 1976 Valiant 40 sailboat possibly to Brazil and Uruguay, and maybe Tierra Del Fuego! This circumnavigation will be at least 15 years! We sprayed the boat with a pressure washer to remove the growth, and then thought about which antifoul removal tool we should use, and researched how to remove old antifouling paint. The cost to remove the Bottom paint and for sanding antifouling paint from gelcoat, and then we had to decide on the best sander for removing bottom paint. “Removal easy off” was one chemical paint stripping product, but was not available here, nor were we impressed with it. . The cost to remove bottom paint was a factor too.Why isnt there a special antifoul removal tool that would make it easy? This isn’t the same as how to paint bottom paint a boat for the first time! How to remove antifouling paint, sanding antifouling, soft or hard antifouling, and the best antifouling paint for fiberglass is a consideration. Looking at the Coppercoat data sheet, and studying Coppercoat problems, and not wanting to get involved with recoating Coppercoat anytime soon, we need to remove the antifouling completely! It's been a hot minute since we had a quiet, contemplative look at some carpentry in action. Steve builds the companionway ladder in this episode, and we follow that process as he selects reclaimed wood from the sides of Victoria's cabin trunk and cockpit footwell. It can be tricky! A simple oil finish on the cabin sole and the ladder steps will feel good on bare feet, will have a good grip even when wet, and will be easy to maintain in the future. The wood sealer we use hardens nicely and protects the wood while leaving some texture that's both pleasing to the eye for its warmth and practical for its safety and comfort. We'll cover the installation next week, when we'll demonstrate how all the hardware that will hold the steps in place. The top step will swing outboard, there will be some pieces in the lid of the fridge to protect the very nice gasket from repeated squishings that could shorten its life. Here's how you can get the clutch pedal pressure back by bleeding air out of your slave cylinder. Unlike brakes, most hydraulic clutches have no bleeder screw to get the air out, so you'll have to do some wrenching to get the air out. There may be a possibility of restoring some pressure on the road if you add more hydraulic fluid and remove the slave cylinder, which is only two bolts. You can then review the slave cylinder part at the beginning of the video. In case the steps in this video don't work for you because your s!%t is too broken, or if you simply want a new master/slave clutch kit, scroll down for the link. When you have little or no clutch pressure and you just had to grid gears to get your jeep home, all may not be lost. There is a way to bleed air out of the clutch restoring pedal pressure getting you back on the road. In this video we go over how we fixed this issue, not a hard fix, you just want to make sure to mount the slave cylinder piston rod correctly so it pushes the clutch fork. We are Ben and MP! Recently we decided to purchase a two-masted 70ft wooden schooner in Brazil. The fun detail about our story is that the boat we bought was sinking and relying on many bilge pumps to survive so we had to lift it onto the dry to start a full refit. In this episode, we are preparing our boat to receive its new keel, but that doesn't mean a simple sanding here and there... it means a lot of breaking and removing of big pieces that will need to be rebuilt before the new keel gets installed. Removing the rudder was quite an adventurous activity. Nobody got hurt, but don't try this at home. In the past, we've had a look in the garage at the piles, en masse, of the mahogany lumber that came out of Victoria, but this week's video goes through a pretty extensive and specific inventory of what we have to play with for reclaimed wood as we put the interior together. Carolyn patterns a partial bulkhead, while Steve gets to finishing the bulkhead that defines the forepeak. This is one of the first times in a long time where 90 degree angles have come into play, as the trim for the passage to the forepeak comes together. Finish work, meaning sanding and applying coatings, is satisfying for so many reasons. You'll be seeing us do a lot of sanding, painting, and varnishing, slowly revealing the beautiful patterns of once-thirsty, glowing grain. A leaky marine head can be a very shitty situation. At one point during our shakedown cruise around Lake Michigan, (thanks to a combination of rollicking seas, a leaky hand pump, and plain ignorance) we ended up with toilet water where it SHOULDN’T be — outside the bowl. Thankfully it was mostly contained in the shower pan, but nevertheless, this experience only confirmed what we had already decided: The marine head and holding tank gotta GO.
